So, the reason the recap episode happened is because Nickelodeon slashed the budget. The series directors didn't want to lay off animators/artists, so they decided to cut out what was *supposed to be* a Kuvira backstory episode and instead just do a recap/clipshow episode in it's place. It does really suck that Nickelodeon did that but I am glad that no one lost their job bc of it, this is the better alternative. From what I've read online it seems like the Kuvira episode also would've tied up some of Korra's story, so for example, it would've made more sense why Korra jumped in to save Kuvira at the end.

I'm not sure if it's canon but there is a popular fan theory that the Avatar world is much smaller than Earth as evidenced by how close the north and south pole are. Because the Avatar world is smaller, gravity is lighter. That's why characters can jump really far and lift and throw heavy things much easier than real world humans. Korra is still quite strong, but the gravity boost helps. I think Tenzin has Aang's abilities but he has more Katara in him. Very parental and reserved but apt to lose his cool.

so the benders v non-benders actually *was* a challenge Avatar Aang faced after he and zuko created republic city in the comics. he did the best he could, but every avatar is gonna struggle to handle a specific aspect of their job that ends up being to core of the problems faced by the next avatar. (mainly bc they’re kids who’ve been given ALLL the power by the universe AND society) examples: - kyoshi created the kyoshi warriors, a huge help for avatar aang, but she also created the Dai Li (im waiting on the roku books to come in so i can see how that affected roku) - roku’s lack of action is the reason Sozin decided to GENOCIDE Aang’s entire nation, leaving Aang alone and with no real training. keep in mind, aang never had any real interest in being the avatar in the first place, which is why the show starts off not even feeling like they’re in a war. - Aang forcing a world that went 100 years without any sort of unification attempts to then “get along” lead to socioeconomic & political instability due to strong ideologies crashing into each other. meaning korra, who was so excited to be the avatar specifically because she knows the glory that comes with it, is now in a world who resents everything the avatar means. we see how that poisons her desire to do it all. i’d also like to acknowledge that the nightmare that chases korra is similar to the one Aang has in episode one of book two: this fear of the avatar state seems to occur across every avatar. keep in mind, it’s a defense mechanism designed to protect the avatar when they can’t protect themselves. Aang has to learn how to control that state, pretty much throughout the entire story. but the only time korra was ever taken into the avatar state without her conscious effort was the one time she needed to NOT do that! in a way, her own body betrayed her, which made me realize why Aang was so afraid of it as well; he probably hurt so many people when he was in the avatar state, which is against his beliefs. anyways. fascinating.

6:16 "Yeah, I don't know man. I think if I ended up in a wheelchair, I don't know if I would ever bounce back mentally." You don't. At least, I haven't. I went from being incredibly strong to being in such severe pain I still can't make it through most days without some kick-ass pain medication. In high school, my standing kicks were strong enough to break a rib cage. I was never a good runner (no stamina lmao), but I could walk a 5k on a whim. In less than 4 years, I went from physically fit with every intention of becoming a mortician for the navy to needing a wheelchair just to grab a gallon of milk and being unable to keep a job for very long. I watched this show as a kid having no idea at all how difficult it would become to watch this arc for Korra. You don't "bounce back" as much as you redirect. You have to approach *everything* from a new angle. Food, exercise, hygiene, all forms of relationships (including familial and platonic), your job prospects, everything. If you have the chance of getting strength in your legs back, **awesome**! Many don't. But it's still manageable. No joke, I ended up falling into the same mindset though. The best advice my therapist gave me was to not think about it as bouncing back. There is no "back" to get to, only forward. If you think about it that way, it's miles easier to cope with in a meaningful way

Eventually that town became what we now know as republic city :) And it makes sense why Mako & Bolin are brothers because they are a biproduct of parents with mixed elements. It saddens me that people hated this series. The only reason I can think of is that they were expecting another Aang and the Gaang travelling around the world. But its a new Avatar, who was brought up differently, in a different era. It's her story, not Aangs, and I think they did a really good job of, first, breaking her down and humbling her, then building her back up. For people who think the technology went too far too quickly, the 'first commercially successful steam engine that could transmit continuous power to a machine was developed in 1712' (The Drill in ATLA), the first automobile powered by gas was 1886 (early sato mobiles). Couple that with the fact that people can bend elements, and a massive war for 100 years meant technology advanced super quick. WW1 and WW2 in our world were major benchmarks for technology. For the people who don't like how obnoxious she is, of course she is! we're not really supposed to like her straight away, otherwise there's no growth for her. She was also told as a, what, 5? year old she's the Avatar and that was an important person to be. We saw what happened when Aang was treated like a god (Kyoshi Island) and how obnoxious and how he let a little power go to his head. Of course she'd grow up with a superiority complex. I think that's also what makes her villains so much more terrifying. They broke down this person who felt like such a powerhouse from the jump. Not to mention the villains themselves. It wasn't a clear this nation vs that nation which was so much more cut and dry in ATLA. It was only slightly touched on in ATLA that not everyone in the fire nation was inherently bad, just under a bad dictator, but in Korra, that theme is expanded on and all benders are shown to have bad in them (except for fire this time, lol). I grew up watching ATLA on nickelodeon, so when this one came out I was excited, and I was not disappointed at all in the story that was told. Plus, bonus, we got LORE.

The hate this show gets online is like 50% sexism, 30% nostalgia goggles for the OG series, and 20% legitimate criticism for how the series was handled by Nickelodeon. The amount of people who hate Korra for being stupid at times, but who love Aang and Zuko despite the same is fucking absurd. Nickelodeon fucked this show hard by only giving them 1 season at a time, and then they fucked them harder by slashing the last season's budget and then dumping it onto their website. And despite all of that, I'd still genuinely defend that LoK was a masterpiece. Flawed as fuck, but a fantastic continuation of what TLA started. I hope the rumors and such of there being a new series end up being true, and I really hope they're given the chance that LoK struggled to obtain.

The series isn’t hated so much in retrospect. If you were there when it was airing, holy fucking shit… Another thing is this was a time when show creators and staff would regularly interact with people online like… pretty openly. There was a learning curve to how vicious people would get about it and what boundaries needed to be set. It was about the end of AtLA when you were getting more centralized social media sites with productions and companies establishing themselves there. However this also meant fan bases noticing this now direct line of contact with mainstream shows and stuff. I was in the LJ community at the time as Korra was coming up and the ending was in tumblr’s prime. It was also as twitter began to overtake tumblr. There were some issues with the fandom and their direct interaction and dogpiling back then as well as some very inappropriate approaches by fans (real person shipping, the ship wars, I’m sure shoving their own fan art porn and stuff, that kid of thing). There had to be those years where the first shows and creators had more direct interactions with fans and seeing just how much the toxic parts of the fandom would jump on the chance to talk at them as much as anyone else. They got shit for everything on a weekly episode by episode basis for tanking the entire show and writing it into the toilet (as some more vocal watchers would say, it’s not a sentiment I agree with). It’s not as vocally hated now and people who have since rewatched it back to back rather than spaced out a week between episodes but ALSO with the gift of rewatch bonus and seeing how things connected or were foreshadowed earlier… and then couple that with binging AtLA in its entirety followed by Korra… Of course it’s regarded so much better now than the crew got treated to when it was running. The crew also took the brunt the hate for writing and quality decisions that were a result of executive meddling. You also see a direct shot at fans in the show with the Nuktuk fans as that was signature con interaction. I think it’s a cute nod, but it was more “this is weird and uncomfortable and we all agree that people like this are awkward and please don’t do this” than anything else. Personally? I didn’t realize how much bi rep actually mattered to me until I saw that finale. People threw a fit and got angry saying it wasn’t good enough while others were insisting they read too much into it. I’m sitting there at 24 and it wasn’t even really subtext, it was pretty blatant. There were a billion things to do to diffuse any romantic reading of the situation, just having a big goodbye to everyone as they send off Korra and Asami to the spirit world would have done the trick. Like… shit I was actually in school getting my degree for animation at the time too. Everything I learned about storytelling was fresh. But I believe Mike had to make a tumblr post confirming this was the end game ship they started wanting to set up by Book 2. Thing is a lot of people also complained it came out of nowhere however… it was also a time where this ending was considered “too far” in showing LGBT characters. This was pre-Steven Universe. Shit, Korra and Asami held hands traveling to the spirit world so Ruby and Sapphire could get marred and kiss on screen. But now, because so much progress has been made, people call it weak and cowardly not making it more explicit. A lot of the feelings and perceptions around a show are remnants of when it came out, the initial strongest reaction. Legend of Korra ended a decade ago and it was the sequel series to a show that single-handedly rose the bar for the quality of visuals and storytelling in western animation. It was a tough act to follow. The network actively screwed it over. The entirety of the last two season were premiered exclusively streamed online when cable premiers were still the standard. Being shown exclusively online was basically a network trying to bury a show back then. It’s the same as screwing a show with an inconsistent time slot. The numbers back then for online viewings on the day it went live were very low compared to today. I love Korra, man. It had a lot working against it though and being in the midst of the rise of online cancel culture along with crew accessibility did not help AT ALL. The network green lighting it as an 8 episode miniseries written solely by the creators who had 4 years between the end of AtLA and LoK… suddenly having to expand that tightened up story to 12 episodes… then having a second season ordered… they had to fumble what they could through Book 2 but there’s only so much they could do because I’m willing to bet it was the season with the least time given and spent on the writing. The best they could do was lay down all the foundation for the rest of the series and then write around that. I like the ultimate end of Korra and Mako’s relationship. It’s not that they didn’t love each other but recognizing that they weren’t good for each other romantically. It really went to show that problems in a relationship happen for more reasons than “you don’t *really* love each other” and that sometimes you have to call it quits because you are worse people together. However I think in the process they fumbled trying to write those issues and end the relationship but also managing the weird triangle stuff. The more awkward elements of Book 2 are definitely a result of not having the time to clean up the script they way they could the other seasons. Plus after the expansion of episodes, they had to hire on more writers. Too many cooks and all that. And since they wanted to go the Korrasami direction, they had to break up Korra and Mako, give Asami and Mako 0 motivation to rekindle things, and Korra and Asami more reason to hang out and team up to lay a foundation for their relationship. So in terms of romance subplot, there was a bit they wanted to happen but Book 2 was deffo a straight line from point a to point b kind of process since the other elements to world building were more important. Most important to the entirety of book 2 was the story of the first Avatar too. That’s a story I’m sure they’ve had on the back burner for a LONG time. I’d even guess it been in mind since AtLA. But yeah… just as someone who was there watching both AtLA and LoK as they came out and as someone in the fandom, on tumblr and LJ too… these impressions that the series is hated isn’t the consensus from today. It’s the loudest consensus from back then.

Yall watch RWBY AND ATLA/LOK? Damn I can't wait to binge it all 3:12:56 what a lot of people didnt catch is that Raava only merged with Wan (and by extention every other avatar) to give him the power of using all four elements -or as many as he chooses- at the same time. Most humans can only hold one, but her energy allows the avatar to use more. She's like three extra slots that also ties the past lives together

Loved The Legend of Korra, and the characters. Zaheer, the best villain in the series.

not sure if anyone has mentioned this but the recap episode in season 4 was originally meant to be a Kuvira backstory episode

my favorite character in the show is korra, so maybe i'm biased, but people just didn't like that she made mistakes. aang was babied by the fans for his mistakes but everyone wants to shit on korra for hers. korra changed a lot as a character and went on a mental journey and that is what makes her such a great character to me
@daurydavis398315 күн бұрын
Funny thing is that if Korra made no mistakes they'd still hate on her and call her a Mary Sue, some people are still doing that today

I think the reason a lot of people hate season 2 is that it retconns basically everything we learn in ATLA about the origin of bending and how the spirits work.
@XavionofTheraАй бұрын
Not really, it just retcons people's headcanons and weird interpretations of eastern philosophy.

It didn't change anything, benders still learned how to USE their bending from the original benders aka Dragons as Wan shows in his episodes Just because they didn't gain the power from dragons/badger moles/ the Moon/ air bison means nothing lol
@zoharamitai871927 күн бұрын
If you're given a sword, does that makes you a swordsman? No. You need to learn to use it. Lion turtle give bending, animals and moon teach humans proper form. As is literally shown in the episode by showing Wan do the dragon dance while the hunter says Wan's bending is nothing like they've seen before. (Because they just toss the fire, Wan BENDS)

Can I just say that I love Varrick's inaccurate retelling of the the show's events in S4 Ep8? If I EVER make my own show, I want to have two episodes after the finale of each season. One to correctly recap the season accurately, and the other to be an incorrect summary that's bizarre and a crack induced craz fest. I would hire KZbinrs like Maxxor to do it too! 😂 😆 🤣

The issue is everyone expected a show as good as the last airbender so when Korra came out and wasn’t as good everyone hated it despite it being good

The thing that makes me most sad about Legend of Korra is that they didn't give us a scene where she interacts with Kyoshi.

Ang was a nomad he littery had friends in almost every nation, His not picking up bending of other tribes was probably because of his personality. He even visited the earth nation before he was found out as the avatar. Before being traped in ice. Rode giant fish in kyoshi and had bommi as a friend. Plus it's usually hard to learn elements that are opposite to your own. And he was mostly in an earth nation. Korra hardest element to learn was air because of her rigid personality which resembles more of a earth bender than a waterbender. in better words her kyoshi was showing.

7:23:38 I really hate the whole, "If they wanted us dead, they'd have already killed us" trope. It just seems like a poor excuse to get people who have no reason to trust each other to start working together.

I mean, it's a trope because it's usually true.

Can we acknowledge how much of a complete badass Tenzin is? Like, yeah yeah, Zaheer is pretty good at airbending, but Tenzin is a MASTER, just like his father. He had Zaheer RUNNING from him during their entire fight! The ONLY reason he lost was because Zaheer’s homies jumped in 😂😂😂😂
