We never see when people unlock their semblances except for Cinder and Ren. Aside from them, we only know the "how" about Nora's, and while we don't know for certain, supposedly Yang unlocked hers during her first haircut. Tai remarks about how he "remembers" it, which is either him alluding to her hair catching fire, or her hair being cut triggering her explosive temper for the first time. Aside from those, we got nothing on semblances.

Yeah, it's not necessarily always a color itself - a lot of names are more so meant to evoke a color, such as raven and qrow both evoking black, coco evoking brown, etc. There are exceptions to the rule but generally speaking they fit.

RWBY is some fairy tale characters : Ruby - Red riding hood, Weiss - Snow White, Blake - Bella (from beauty and the beast, she love books after all!) and Yang - Goldylocks (Her first fight was against Ursa's [bears!] and she also really care about her hair.) All school headmasters also have their "team" theme, but I don't know if you met them all yet so I won't spoil. And.. well there are other "teams" in the future as well. This show is really well written if you ask me.

Y'know, this is _actually_ pretty plausible. Not a significant plot point, just a funny little quirk about Jaune's family, so not really a spoiler: We find out later that Jaune and his sisters' are collectively based on colors of the rainbow. Jaune is, of course, French for Yellow, and "Arc" can reference the arc of the rainbow. So if we go along with the notion that he unconsciously saw Pyrrha as a sister of sorts, that puts her on the rainbow. Her dominant color is Red: _very_ Red. But he already had a "Red" sister, and Pyrrha would have been even more, deeper Red. Pyrrha was "Infrared", thus he couldn't "see" her properly... because she was _too hot._

The music for RWBY was all written by Jeff Williams, a close friend of the founders of Rooster Teeth who had also done some music for Red vs Blue and other RT productions. His daughter Casey Lee Williams performs the main vocals for RWBY and she was only 12 when she recorded the Volume 1 soundtrack! Jeff stepped down from writing the music after Volume 8 and Casey took over for Volume 9 (and hopefully beyond) along with Martin Gonzalez, a member of her band OK Goodnight, as a co-writer.

God, i'm missing the RWBY music, I hope now that Viz media continues producing the series, the music will be back up on all streaming platforms ASAP. Also knowing everything that comes ahead, it's always nice to see the groundwork this volume lays for a lot of things that come next, great set-up and foreshadowing. Absolutely can't wait for when the volume 3 binge comes out / goes public, aaaaah another month and half I suppose it is, but the wait will be worth it. Something to note: every song on the ost are from one or more characters' POV, kind of like an inner monologue in song form. They function as not just backstory, but also additional foreshadowing, character motivations, and character development. So it's a good idea to listen to the ost on your off time with the lyrics pulled up, though i wouldn't recommend listening past whatever volume you're currently on as there can be spoilers.

It isn't mentioned enough but that jab at 1:00:25 that Pyrrha does after whipping her spear around her neck is CLEAN AF. It has always been one of my fav moves in RWBY just because of the use of her rifle's recoil to make a quick immediate jab to then retrieve it like a recoil assisted pool table strike done over her shoulders like a fuckin boss. Nobody notices it or has ever mentioned it before that I have seen so I need to say something. It is HIGHLY underrated in the catalog of RWBY moves.

Tho notably not everyone follows this rule, for example Port's name is Peter, which isn't a color but rather a derivative of the Greek word for "stone". That's probably Goodwitch, for self explanatory reasons, but Ironwood is also up there. Again, you could pretzel logic that including "iron" as part of his name suggests gray or something, but compounding it into Ironwood (which is a real thing and is not at all gray) undoes that. And his given name, James, is a descendent of the Hebrew name Jacob, which has a couple meanings but none are related to colors, with the most commonly known being "grabs by the heel".

1:45:55 About the characters' names being colors, Monty Oum himself explained that a character's name must be either "a color, something that sounds like a color, something that means a color, or something that makes you think of a color." Admittedly, that last one does some heavy lifting and is a bit vague/subjective, but there is at least a conscious effort on the part of the writers to give the characters color-adjacent names. Weiss is German for white, Blake is an Old English form of black, Jaune is French for yellow; Sun, Neptune, Mercury, and Emerald are evocative of yellow, blue, grey, and green in simple ways. Some are a bit more roundabout, like Oobleck, who is named for a Dr. Seuss book about a fast-running green slime creature. I think it's safe to assume that if a character's name doesn't bring to mind a color, it might be because the etymology is unfamiliar. I actually just found this out while typing this comment, from the wiki: "Pyrrha" is derived from the Greek adjective pyrrhos (πυρρός), which means "flame-colored" (in reference to her red hair). Monty himself pointed out that there is only one (intended) exception to the color rule, that being Ozpin, but he was quite cryptic about what this would imply.

Every character name follows the same rules: they either are, mean or resemble a color. So some of the names might be straight up colors, mean colors in other languages (Weiss is White in German) or just something that makes you think of a color (Sun makes you think of yellow, Neptune makes you think of blue, etc)

so i know a lot of people have pointed out the naming scheme in the comments already and yes most of the characters names are based off of colors, but not only are they based on colors they're also based on characters from folk tales. Ozpin is Oz from wizard of Oz, and Glynda Goodwitch is literally Galinda from the same story. Sun wukong is literally sun wukong (monkey king), Neptune is based on Neptune of the sea and guardian of Poseidon. everyone probably has pointed out the main squad being based on Red Ridding Hood, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and Goldilocks the coolest concepts with all this is that all these fairy tale people are fighting the Grimm aka Grimm Fairy tales which I find neat! Idk if you'll ever read this comment but pay attention to the fact Yang's Mom is named "Raven" and Ruby was trained by "Qrow"~

The food fight was literally made because there was no serious situation in which RWBY and JNPR would fight, so they made the food fight to answer the question of "Who wins" The answer was they kick each others asses to a draw because they are both really strong Also the color thing was quite literal. Every person in the show has some sort of color association (with the exception of JNPR, but that's because their allusions were written before the color idea)

30:18 - Monty sadly passed away from a severe allergic reaction early in the production of Volume 3. IIRC, he had completed his voice work for Ren and his choreography for the fight scenes, but most of the rest of the volume was completed after his passing. And yes, he had _lots_ of notes for what was to come; I seem to recall something about other members of the team saying they had enough material in Monty's notes to _potentially_ go for like 16 or 17 volumes if they wanted to, but I have no idea how closely they've stuck to whatever specific ideas Monty had.

Since we aren't seeing just episodes of RWBY on youtube, I do hope you guys are just watching it on your site with your membership. I had forgotten how fun and silly these first school episodes were, and the show actively grows from there. Even as the show is in rough seas right now, having only barely gotten a new home studio to house it, having folks be interested and sharing it may yet help it to stick the landing and finish out what they had been building up to.

To explain the whole food fight thing and how the food was so sturdy and strong, it's because they can transfer Aura into objects to make them stronger (for example, the bread that didn't break when used as swords in the food fight) and once they are dropped, thrown, etc the Aura transferred into that object lingers for a limited time (which is how the links Ren threw still were able to stick into the concrete even after he threw them)

One of my favorite things about this show is that all the characters are based on myth, legends, and stories. Like Ruby is a little red riding hood, Ozpin is the Wizard of Oz, Sun is Sun Wu Kong, Penny is Pinocchio and Pyrrha is Achilles to name a few.

Boy when I saw Mercury fight, I was immediately impressed. Guy's a real kicker. And that Neo vs Yang is unforgettable. Monty is just so good with not just crafting character looks and personalities, but also the fighting style to go along with it. How each character fights is very distinct. Monty's animations basically feel like those martial arts movies with how well-choreographed they are, except you add the flashy anime flare into it. And it's just perfect.

For the color thing it’s loosely based on color so also colours in different languages and names that make you think of a colour. So Velvet Scarlatina= Red Velvet cake and Scarlet (Red) Sun = Associated with Yellow Jaune = Yellow in French Weiss = white in German Mercury = an element notable for its silver color Neptune = name of a sea god, so blue Cinder Fall = Cinders are either an ashy grey or often a flickering orange/red, depending if they are lighted. Emerald = literally just the color green

29:40 Popular consensus says the later seasons are bad, but honestly think that the writing gets better and better the same way the animation does; I love the early volumes, but the show goes to some really interesting places later on. Fun fact about the crossdressing episode, all of team JNPR are based off of historical or mythological figures that are known for crossdressing. Juane is of course Joan of Arc, Nora is Thor, Pyrrha is Achilles, and Ren is Mulan. A lot of characters are based off of fairy tales, myths, or historical figures.

I don’t want this to get buried because I need them to see this or enough people to see it so that they are aware so please like this or reply in agreement or something. This may be a little long so I apologize in advance🙏 Please watch the “World Of Remnant” shorts so you understand the world and story telling a little more. They have like 4 of these shorts per the first 3 volumes and since you’re about to start volume 3 you are all good to watch all of them. They explain aspects of the world so you understand what’s going on a little bit better such as what is a semblance, how the world is divided (kingdoms, continents, etc.), and some other stuff. I feel its pretty well developed in the story telling but when you’re watching in a group or sometimes on first watch through, you tend to miss stuff that I feel really enhances the story, the story telling, and just has some extra things that can catch your attention if you’re aware of why it might matter. I got lucky since I didn’t know these existed when I started RWBY by already being pretty detail oriented along with being obsessed with lore and watching extra videos of other creators talking about their thoughts regarding some stuff. There is some bts stuff that is unexplained if you just watch the shorts though like how Monty made the map for Remnant by using the breakfast he had on his plate (feel free to explain that if you comment below) or how every character is inspired by a fairy tale. I bring it up because the first one is more of a fun fact but the fairy tale portion genuinely affects the story and if you know how the fairy tale’s for some of the characters go you can draw parallels that make you understand the character better. I say all this because the still seemed to be confused/unaware about some stuff (semblances, aura, hunters and huntresses, etc.) and I think it would really help make some stuff make sense as well as enhance the overall story for them👍

Bonus tid bit, they’ve also released animated shorts of the RWBY in world fairy tales that are a bit of extra world building that could be fun to experience. Could also enhance some story moments as you learn about/ see more of the world because as they state in the show… fairy tales are often based on real events

Some more fun information for you guys while watching this! Most characters in the show are based on fairytales, fables or legends and if you can figure out which specific one it can tell you more about their story! Ruby is red riding hood, red cape and wolves in her trailer Weiss is snow white, weiss schnee is german for white snow and her song mirror mirror gives more clues (also another member of team rwby named after a color, just in german) Blake belladonna is beauty and the beast. Her being a beauty and somewhat of a beast, while Adam(also the name of the prince in the disney story) can also be the beast in her story Yang is goldilocks! Some more fun ones you guys might have guessed Penny is pinnichio, build but with a soul and she sneezes shen she lies like you guys pointed out! Oz and his group are the wizard of Oz. Oz is the wizard, glynda (goodwitch), ironwood the tinman and qrow who they mentioned the scarecrow. More and more of these will show up!! ❤️ some more obvious then others~

I always love this forshadowing as the Queen-chesspiece is shown in the Atlas tower, the bell strickes for the 12th time / midnight indicating that what THIS is the point of no return. There is no stopping what is to come now, even if they would figure out Cinders plan ahead of time.

Fun fact: The duo tactics Ruby calls out are named after the ship names the fans came up with. So Freezerburn is Weiss/Yang, Ladybug is Ruby/Blake... etc.

I'm sure someone has said this but notice the motifes which is the best part. RWBY are all fairy tales. Red riding hood and the wolves. Snow white, beaty and the beast (faunus) and Goldilocks fought bears first. and then Ozpin is the wizard with Ruby sort of also being dorthy and glenda the goodwitch, and now we have our tin man. we need a lion and a scarecrow. JNPR are people who crossdressed in lore/history. Jaune Arc is joan of arc pyra is the name Achilles used when he dressed up as a woman, Nora valkerye is the time thor pretended to be on, and Ren is the story of Mulan. Also Cardin (the bully form season 1) is after the Cardinal who had had Joan executed. Everything sort of ties together.
