The term "locked and loaded" comes from flintlock rifles where once you had loaded your rifle you would lock your priming powder in place with your frizzen. After that you needed to cock your hammer to fire. There was a rest position between uncocked and fully cocked for messing with priming powder and other reasons. This position is where the term "going off half-cocked" comes from.

The point of a bread slicer is that you only slice the amount you need to the rest of the loaf is not drying out. If you slice a whole loaf you increase its surface area by several magnitudes and you inevitably end up with slices which dry out and throw shapes

I think a wok is the best thing for deep frying. You can get away with a very small amount of oil compared to other pans and because it is wider at the top, it has lots of space to account for bubbles and catches any splatters. Plus, you can use a wok for all sorts of things, so you don't have a one-use tool taking up space.

Any extra in sink catch is going to be far more useful than a device you have to stick on somewhere. Perks of the in sink one is can just near permanently sit on the drain for storage too. Guys just buy a camping/ RV sink already. There are versions with a handpump to prime it or a powered pump. It can pull water from a filled container of any size. As someone who lives somewhere with very low humidity (at least in my aparment its dry af) im glad i have a breadcutting machine since when i want to keep my loaf fresh for longer its better to cut the bread when you need a slice rather than having it presliced. But to each their own i guess.
@Sanne78Күн бұрын
A lot of families had that breadslicer growing up in the 80's (or a "guillotine" looking one like ours) and it's excellent for ryebread that's typically a little denser/hardier than white bread 💜
@MrMartinSchouКүн бұрын
I don't get the bread slicer. I get the idea, but why get that when you can get ones with a motor? You can get ones where all the food touching parts are dishwasher safe, and does meats as well for around £50.
@AlexinWalesКүн бұрын
You would then have the cost of electricity everytime you sliced your bread. Many manual kitchen tools are just as effective as motorised ones so you do not always gain anything except extra expenses by buying the electric version of them.

In germany a motorized version of the bread slicer was absolute common in most households for a long time. They are way better than the one tested and I hate buying sliced bread. It goes stale way quicker.

Right? I live in Czech Republic, and we have an electric one. It´s great for cutting all sorts of things, like tough salami/sausage. And home-made bread doesn´t come pre-sliced. xD

I call it the rice cooker principle. Companies convince huge numbers of people that simple tasks (such as cooking rice) are beyond their abilities, in order to sell them gadgets. A good example is coffee pods. That technology has existed since the 70s (its how coffee vending machines worked). Only relatively recently have people decided that making a pot of coffee is so diffcult that it requires an outrageously expensive pod machine.

In countries/cultures where rice is consumed every day, often multiple times a day, rice cooker is indispensable and virtually a necessity.

You can cook rice in a pot every single day without a rice cooker. People did for hundreds of years. I’m always so baffled that people worship those stupid rice cookers, they just take up a lot of space for nothing.
@ContrarianDC_KAFКүн бұрын
@@glockenrein What the f is wrong with you? Let's take this further. People have had no running water, refrigeration, or washer/dryer for hundreds of years. Your ignorance and lack of understanding ("I'm baffled") are not bases for a good argument. Allow people to own a $20 small equipment to make their rice with ease. I bet if I inspect your pathetic life, I'd fine tons of things I personally do without. Like your vibrator.
@KyteM23 сағат бұрын
@@glockenrein Having cooked rice in a pot for about 20 years and switched to a rice cooker less than 5 years ago, the main benefit of the rice cooker is not having to watch it. It lets you divest your attention from the rice and focus on other things, trusting the machine will keep it ready and perfect when you need it. Many also offer a steamer option. Also it's pretty great for reheating food without the usual foibles of microwaves or burning the bottom in a stove. Electric pressure cookers can do that too, btw.

Don’t usually comment, but thought I’d add that you can use a Silpat on the counter to stop appliances from moving around. I used one under my stand mixer this Christmas baking season and now I can walk away without fear it will shimmy itself off the counter. Could use one under the bread slicer to hold it steady. Thanks for all the great videos!

That bread slicer came out in 1904, pre-sliced bread became a thing in 1936, so not that long a wait Ben. I have an antique bread knife that's not serrated at all: which is unusual for bread knives. Just a very thin & broad blade so it cuts straight. So good you can easily make Melba Toast by hand quickly. PS If you have a loaf shaped like this 🍞, lay it on it's side & it'll cut more evenly & easier, even if the bread is soft & squishy.

My mother has an electrical bread slicer - which also cuts vegetables, meat/sausage and other stuff. Love it. It especially slices salami or ham (Schwarzwälder Schinken or Parma) sooooo thin and evenly

Yeah... the strainer... I use a colander and catchers in the drain. I end up with too much kitchen debris for one of those and I'm only cooking for 3. I can't imagine why you'd use one. It adds steps, an extra thing in my sink, and something else to dispose of. As for the bubble thing... looks to me like someone ended up with a ton of "out of rotation" housings for blow torches or a machine that made them and needed something to do that would off set the cost. It's cute and I'm glad you spent the 200 so I could watch Ben scamper up the stairs to feed Barry smoke bubbles.

I have one of those tall glass jugs with the lines up the side and a lid and when I use oil I strain it through a METAL funnel with a piece of kitchen paper in it and it does a perfect job of removing the debris and making my oil clean and reusable. Washing up? One funnel and the original pan or baking dish and a silicone spatula that I use to ensure all oil is removed from the pan. ❤❤
