I think what he was reacting to was what black could've done next. fxe5 allows black to play Qh4. with a double-attack on the d pawn, white must respond with Ne2 to defend, losing the initiative while simultaneously blocking his rook's open file and restricting the range of his bishop and queen. Black's pieces are much more active and there is also good counterplay on the queenside for black in this scenario.

f3 can be played but why. Rxd6 Kc8 Rxf6 and you win a rook on a8 with check Qe4+ g6 and you defended against mate threat without spending move cuz you already defending and won knight and 2 pawns in meantime. Magic. Never defend against threats if yours are stronger.
