Hohohoho, we're finally here everyone!! Eren has infiltrated Marley, seen the kinds of people there, and it doesn't look like it will stop him from whatever he's about to do. And Reiner...my boy Reiner. Way to go MAPPA doing such an excellent job adapting this segment. You had to cut out a fair amount of material, but even so, well done. Dude, I didn't recognize him AT ALL until Caleb and Jacob started freaking out saying "Yuki Kaji" as if his voice actor was supposed to mean something. Hell, I even thought about whether I was supposed to know that dude when we saw him earlier and never thought of Eren. Only reason I "know" even now is because that's what makes the most sense rather than that I recognize the voice.

I've always thought in my mind that Reiner was "bad" in the fights. He lost to Eren and the survey corps multiple times in battle and always needed saving to get out of a lethal situation, much like what was shown in this episode. It just looked like he was getting pummeled every time due to how the plot was going. Now, Reiner is revealed to not even be the first choice to any titan at all because of his less impressive abilities compared to his comrades and it makes so much more sense for Reiner to constantly lose to basically everyone. Reiner was chosen for his perseverance and even that ability is standing on its last legs.

@@pririri I think that because reiner and eren are basically a mirrored image of eachother, their ultimate journey's are the same but opposite... reiner's journey is him trying to find his humanity again after being militarised as a child, him growing an understanding of what he's done and how he's been manipulated. Eren's journey is him slowly losing his humanity, though still understanding what he's doing and what he has to do, all it does it drive him further. They're two people who grew up with essentially the same goal, to destroy a group they've been told are nothing but monsters in order to save their people and the ones they love.

@@anitaremenarova6662 it makes sense. For what other reason would she follow Kenny around? Now, it’s not said HOW she figured out who Kenny worked for, but we can chalk that up to her detective skills. We can also assume that this is why she chose to be in the military police. It’s a shame we couldn’t see more, but I understand that the studio needs to hurry things along to cover everything (plus, Isayama supposedly was quite happy with the way they adapted this episode)

Code of the week "Hi Eren" Reiner is nothing short of an incredible character. The man started off as a cool and likeable comrade, to ending up being a traitor who's broken and has sympathy for the people he's hurt, to full on enemy that we had to take down, and now being basically the protagonist at the endgame. Isayama struck gold with him to the point where I just want to give him a big ol hug and say "its going to be okay" which is something I never would have expected when seeing the armored take down the wall in episode 2 of season 1. Unreal.

He really is well written. So it's a shame that the series composer (Hiroshi Seko) removed a fair bit of his character development that's apparent in the manga. Also the scene leading up to Reiner putting a gun to his mouth is better paced and executed in the manga than anime.
@samial1733
@samial1733 4 жыл бұрын
The level at which Reiner is broken is hard to even put into words. Being used as a tool by his mother to raise her status to Marleyan telling him it'll bring their family back together despite her knowing full well his father wanted nothing to do with them. Which Reiner learns first hand after meeting him in person after all the years of training and perseverance he went through to be able to meet him. After learning that his whole life purpose of reuniting his family is a lie, he latches onto the next one, being a hero, a chosen warrior who will save the world from the island devils. Yet that purpose is also shattered the very same day, learning from Marcel that he wasn't even supposed to be chosen and only was because Marcel downplayed his brother so much to the military that they chose him instead. Reiner was literally just used as a sacrificial scapegoat to save his brother. And there goes Reiner's second and last purpose. This only worsens when the morning after Marcel is eaten saving Reiner right after just telling him that he's the reason he's even there in the first place. Reiner blanks out and runs away immediately as far as he can. A far cry from the hero he was proclaiming himself to be just a tiny bit earlier. With Marcel gone, Annie tells him the mission is basically hopeless and that he needs to take the blame and die for causing this. Reiner's sense of self and worth is already dead and gone at this point and after having his skull bashed in by Annie and repeatedly told how useless he is, his mental solution is to simply give up his own identity and become somebody else, Marcel. It's here we can see one of the origins of Reiner's split warrior/persona personality before he even started living with the people on Paradis. Reiner was broken from day 1 of the mission. Reiner then spends the next 5 years trying to best the best leader he can be to Bertholdt and Annie by trying to imitate Marcel as much as possible. This morphs into Reiner's soldier persona, the supportive, dependable, kind big brother figure he acts around the 104th and genuinely begins to believe he is as his dissociative personality worsens the longer he spends there. All whilst snapping out of it in his talks with Annie and Bertholdt and acting like some tough, decisive leader to them that he was never cut out to be. But hey he fakes it until he makes it not only convincing himself of his act but also Eren who openly admires him and wants to be like him more than anyone. Reiner gives him advice at one of the lowest points in Eren's life, to keep moving forward, the very same advice that lead Reiner to his current situation sat with a gun in his mouth ready to blow his brains out. It's no coincidence the scenes of him saying that are perfectly aligned with the sequence of him loading the gun and getting ready to kill himself. When Reiner returns from Paradis, he's suffering from severe survivors guilt being the only one to make it back, especially after being the one who made them continue the mission instead of turning back, trying to take responsibility by making himself the new leader to Annie and Bertholdt. Still having nightmares of Bertholdt's defeat in Shiganshina. He's now made to raise and watch these kids who are about to go down the exact same path as he did with nothing he can do to stop it besides trying to save his cousin Gabi from suffering the way he did at the cost of another kid Falco who he obviously sees himself in. No one in Marley understands him or has any idea what happened on the island, he has to lie straight faced to his family about the "devils" he met there since if he doesn't it could get them all killed. The only time he looks even remotely happy is the little smiles/smirks he has when he thinks back on his time on Paradis, like when Porco provokes him about he acted like some strong, reliable figure when he was there, to which Reiner just smiles and agrees with him, which throws Porco off entirely. And with his family where when they start talking about how awful and evil the devils on Paradis, Reiner has to physically cover his mouth with his hand to hide his smile at how absurd and wrong what they're saying. After all even though his mind was splitting between two realities, and he was faced with the burden of saving the entire human race and leading the warriors, those years he spent with the 104th in training were without a doubt the best of his life. And that is so unbelievably sad. Done with this long rant. Just wanted to word vomit this since I see a lot of people condense Reiner's depression to just a couple key points when there's far more layers, and negative things that have all piled on him throughout his entire life, all building up to the tragic crescendo we see in this episode with him an inch a way from blowing his brains out. The only thing stopping him being the realization that he still has a duty to watch over those kids in the 2 years he has left. i copied this

Just as a note, the pose that Bertholdt made looks like the "Hanged Man" arcana while he had dream of the man who hanged himself. I believe the arcana was inspired by Odin's endeavor to gain the knowledge of the runes by hanging himself in the world tree, Yggdrasil, for nine nights while getting stabbed by his own spear. Odin needs to suffer in order to gain the knowledge/wisdom he needed, just like the warriors. Also in tarot, when you draw the hanged man the meanings are : If it's reversed : Delays, resistance, stalling, indecision If it's upright : Pause, surrender, letting go, new perspectives Hmmm. I wonder whose arc it is? There are so many reference to Norse myth by Isayama scattered throughout the series. Also, oh, hi, Loki... i mean, hi, Eren....

This episode hit really hard in the feels, and it made me realize something tragic. That Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie when they were undercover as Soldiers was one of the only times they weren't treated like 'the spawn of the devil' in their entire lives... it hurts to think of the internal struggle they must have had. Another thing I thought about was a line Annie said to Eren back in season 1 in either episode 3 or 4 she said something like 'I'm not stupid enough to play soldier in this shitty world' which makes me think of the line in a whole new light after this episode. Man I love this show.

There was symbolism in this episode that is easily missed and overlooked: Annie killing the grasshopper. When Reiner and Bertholdt look over to see what Annie was kicking they see a mangled grasshopper. Grasshoppers in various cultures and religions represent different things, but most commonly are associated with "good luck" and fortune for the world. They either go through complete metamorphosis or incomplete metamorphosis and hatch from larvae, which is like an egg pod or cocoon. In religions such as the Bible, Grasshoppers are metaphors that symbolize the puniness of man when viewed from above. They also never jump backwards or sideways and are always moving/jumping forward, which some interpret as meaning to take a "leap of faith." How ironic is it that titans are huge creatures while humanity are puny in comparison when viewed above by Titans. In this case when Annie, Reiner, and Bert attack the walls the Eldians in the walls are like the grasshoppers who symbolize the puniness of man when viewed from above. Also how ironic is it that grasshoppers are meant as "good luck" and taking a "leap of faith," but in this case, the "leap" moving forward of the Paradis Island Operation was a massive fail. How ironic is it that Annie, the one who killed and mangled the grasshopper is in a larvae type cocoon just like grasshoppers when they hatch. I doubt this scene was included trivially and I think Annie killing the grasshopper symbolized how terribly everything went from the start.

very well said. A lot of people don't see this manga/show as deeply as they should. I say this a lot, but you can take any piece of dialogue from nearly any chapter of the manga and find a deeper meaning or importance behind it. There is a ton of symbolism, and the most we've seen is in this season. Isayama's work with characters, a setting which completely represents the real world (1900's), and its theme and messages behind it are second to none, and I find his writing to be some of the greatest I have ever read.

HI EREN When the wall was breached and Dina appeared in this episode, she didn't eat Bertholdt despite him being in clear view and reachable enough for her to grab, much to his surprise. Usually, titans would attack humans the moment they see them. Do you think that deep inside what's left of her human subconscious had somehow influenced her to continue in her search for Grisha and that's why she ignored Bert? She could have been like the talking titan with Ilse Langnar in one of the ovas who mistook the latter for Ymir and instead of eating her bowed to her in worship.

Code of the Week "Hi Eren" One of the things that I found interesting in this episode was that Bertolt was surprised at seeing Dina walk past him and paying him no mind because ANY other titan would have stopped and tried to eat him. Which really shows how aberrant or special Dina's Titan was at it ignored the chance to become human again and instead made a BEELINE to Eren's house to eat his mother. The fact that Dina also ate Hans instead of outright killing him means that she may have been just conscious enough to seek out and devour anyone closely associate with Grisha. The reason why Dina find Eren in season 2 may be that she can sense Grisha inside Eren. Be that his blood being half Grisha or having the Titan that Grisha possessed and thus having a potential similar 'signature' to Grisha through the paths. Just some things that I found interesting

I agree. Dina is the only pure titan with royal blood we got to see so it's really hard to say how she operated. Hi Eren. As a person who deals with guilt for a long time. No other anime has portrayed it so poignantly as AOT with the character of Reiner. the general public sees it as some sort of self-deprecating trait but its more than that. Its corrosive, it lingers, its a memory that sticks and usually does not even need the trigger because its always there, on your shoulder. Tapping you, saying "Hey, don't forget about me. Its because of what you did that I'm here." Guilt is dreadful, looming and hollow. The way the show portrays it with Reiner and his coping mechanisms with it hits very close to home that I had to pause this episode to take a breather at times.

*Hi Eren!* 43:43 If you want some deeper meaning for Bertholdt’s “hanged man sleeping position” I recommend checking the tarot card for it: “The Hanged Man represents ‘the waiting game’. Although we are rarely happy about being stuck in limbo, there are times when nothing else can be done, and we are forced to be still. This often requires the sacrifice of people and things that we would rather hold on to. Sometimes we have to accept a loss for the greater good if we ever want to move forward. The Hanged Man tarot card is a ‘maybe’ when it comes to ‘yes or no’ readings. For the most part, it suggests hanging out for a while and refraining from action.” ACTIONS - letting go, surrendering to experience, ending the struggle, being vulnerable and open, giving up control REVERSING - turning the world around, changing your mind, overturning old priorities, seeing from a new angle SUSPENDING ACTION - pausing to reflect, feeling outside of time, giving up urgency, waiting for the best opportunity SACRIFICING - being a martyr, renouncing a claim, putting self-interest aside, giving up for a higher cause There is no one absolute rule for reading the meaning for the card, especially like this without context, these are just some I picked up, also English is not my native language so explaining all the “meanings” for it is pretty much impossible for me… But google will tell you the rest :D

Not sure how many of you guys noticed Annie's hair style during her appearance in capital was from Mina Coralina. Mina always seated infront Annie when they are eating during training in Season 1 which with this hair style sense kind of told us Annie had became friend with Mina. Mina was in squad 34 with Eren and Armin during Battle of Trost District and died because Eren lead them to a pointless rush. In Season 1 Episode 13 we saw Annie apologize to a dead body (face not shown) after victory in Battle of Trost District which makes me think the body was actually Mina's body that Annie was apologizing to. In additional in this S4:E3 episode we saw before they destroyed the gate of Trost District Annie was telling Reiner that the operation was going to cause their friend's life and it ended tragically cost Annie's friend Mina's life.

This episode also elevated the Reiner Bertolt reveal back in season 2 further. Because Eren's lines hit home even further with what you guys discussed. Eren is a prideful boy. He doesn't ask others for help, EXCEPT for Reiner. When Eren feels like he isn't cut out for it during practical ODM training, Reiner pushes him forward. Even back in Season 1 when Eren fails the ODM gear test (though it was Shadis's fault), Reiner took Eren out and encouraged him. So to have the one person he COULD ask for help training with be part of the issue's he's dealing with just makes the betrayal much much worse. Isayama's ability to make already impactful scenes take on EVEN more meaning is glorious. Annie's glare during the *back then comedic* moment where she beats the crap out of Eren and Reiner takse on a whole new meaning knowing how much she hated him. And now knowing that just before breaking wall Rose, Reiner told her to her face that the 104th weren't friends. Then right after breaking the wall, seeing Reiner snap after seeing Marco die. Bertolt and Annie had to watch Reiner go back and forth so many times.

hi Eren! It's heartbreaking to see Reiner's motivations for becoming a Warrior. All he wanted was for his father to accept him and to make his family proud. Instead, his father rejects him anyway, and then he finds out his position as a Warrior wasn't even earned. He's been living a lie since day 1. And then he takes on another new identity almost immediately by becoming the new Marcel, an identity he rehashes as the Soldier when he becomes everyone's big brother the way Marcel was to Porco. Seeing how he took up the mantle of leader also adds another layer of guilt on him; Bert and Marcel died, and Annie was lost all because of Reiner. The man who was never supposed to be a Warrior is the only one that came back alive Also, I think Marcel kept apologizing to Reiner because he was knowingly condemning him to his undeserved fate by convincing Magath to give him the Armored Titan. We were lead to believe he was saying, "Sorry for Porco's rudeness," but was actually, "Sorry, I'm gonna get you killed so I can save my brother". This also continues the theme of saving your loved ones from the titans. Reiner and Falco are doing it for Gabi, (if we follow that other guy's theory) Colt is doing it for Falco, and now we learned that Marcel did it for Porco.

Now I notice how everything was "made" to make us believe that it was nothing more, when it is in fact one of the most complex worlds and stories I've ever seen. Just amazing. By the way big fan of you guys, keep up the great work and much love from France

Hi Eren! Caleb's talk of Eren being on his own and split from the party has me obsessed over the possibility of him getting a "Zuko Alone" treatment if we get flashbacks for the time we've missed. Great reaction as always guys, I look forward to your discussions every week.

I love how articulate they are with their thoughts. I have read the manga and I have thought about these scenes many times, but it's sometimes really hard for me to articulate what I think and feel. It's honestly quite impressive

The way you always spot Yuki Kaji in every anime you watch amazes me lmao. From Yukine on Noragami, Kenma on Haikyuu and even Eren without recognizing the appearance and recognized by voice. I mean, Yuki Kaji's an icon. His voice stands out the most (at least to me)

Hi Eren I found it really interesting that in the beginning scene with young Reiner, Bert, Porco (Galliard is a way cooler name tho) and the other warrior candidates talking, they decided to use a string remixed version of the theme from the action in Season 4 Episode 1 when Reiner is fighting in Fort Slava. I wonder if that has kinda become like Reiner's theme for the final season Also, the lyrics to Apple Seed (the theme from 3x15 when Bertoldt blows up the scouts in Shinganshina) has the following verse: "Apples drop beside the tree Old man please, remember me and All of us still chase our dream Underneath the canopy"

28:00 That's reflected in the opening as well. As the only thing bringing out color within that world was the destruction, the explosions and the death of humans. It's a twisted beauty that can bring humans together through their pain and suffering.

for those lacking context in ten years, there was this game released in 2018 that got really popular in 2020 called Among Us, and that's what the reference to impostors and such is about

Quick overview of the things MAPPA cut out (though I would suggest still checking out the manga because a chunk of important dialogue and inner-monologue were skipped): 1: Annie transforms (after the little conflict Annie and Reiner had), yells to get the pure titans her way, and Reiner and Bert ride Annie ALL the way to where the wall was visible before she switched with Reiner (Jaw and Female were meant to take turns cuz it's exhausting). With titans chasing their back, Bert hurries up, transforms, and busts the wall (we see it all from his perspective which was really nice.) Reiner stalls the titans, Smiling titan slips through, it ignores Bert, Reiner takes Bert and Annie up the wall away from the titans, and then does his thing. 2. 2 years after the villager hung himself, they figure out the so-called "King" and his entire family are mere puppets. Reiner suggests that they become Soldiers to infiltrate the IMP and hopefully find some ties with the true king. Despite the vow to renounce war (researched by the Tybur family), one scream is all it takes to flatten the world. They decide instead of being chaotic and straightforward by destroying Wall Rose and Wall Sheena, they "march slowly forward. That's what we came for. To save humanity" (Reiner). 3. The reason why Annie followed Kenny to where he was headed was in hopes that she could reach the King of the walls. Other minor details were skipped, but that should be about it.

Honestly maybe it’s just cause I have read the manga but I don’t mind that these things were cut because in a way there’s just enough to compensate that most watching will probably already piece together themselves as to what’s going on through the info they already have from previous seasons #2 will probably be the only thing I can see people maybe getting genuinely confused about
@Noboku
@Noboku 4 жыл бұрын
@@DarkKnightofAnime You overestimate people haha. #1 and #3 are plot-related, so these can be pieced together as you mentioned, whereas #2 is more motive-oriented, so it makes sense for people to get confused over that instead. It's mainly interactions and inner-monologue they skipped that would otherwise shed a few new lights to our Warriors. However, I'd say the very crucial material were beautifully condensed and adapted faithfully. The fact that MAPPA did that in just the span of 20 so minutes is truly outstanding.
@petersenior5432

@@Noboku #2 seems like if they kept it in, it would be like a broken record. We already see the two focus characters in the episode, Reiner and Eren, say the "Keep moving forward" line. They don't need a second scene for Reiner to say that.
