When Takamura and Mashiba call Ippo an underdog, they were actually calling him a loser (which is why the Coach got upset and Mashiba's words stung). The sub on this one was strange.

Hm in my version of subtitles they didn't use "Underdog" but "Loser". So in both scenes where Takamura slaps Ippo's chest and Mashiba over the phone were both referring to him as a Loser. Prefer that to be honest because it just makes more sense. Underdog sounds weird to me at least.

Loser fits better, for sure. But Underdog also fits the context. An Underdog is someone people don't expect to win. So in essence, calling him an underdog after he already lost is basically calling him a "Loser nobody expected to win anyway"

takamura said make inu kun. mashiba said "make inu" is literally loser dog. "make inu" is a harsher way of saying it than loser. Underdog is called Kamase inu in Japanese. Inu means dog, so I think the translator mistook it for underdog.
