Examples of this is his fight with Thors. When he says he'll spare them all, he swears on his father. When he says he'll let them go in exchange for Thors life, he swears on Artorius

The flashback in the dagger as it fell in slow mo was a brilliant touch. In the manga, it was presented as a splash page, with all the different scenes as still images in a collage, but this was way more effective. Can’t wait for Farmland saga (because it’s gotta be in the works, cmon)!

I think the second OP can apply to anyone of the Canute Crew very well(a few examples): Askeladd- Doesn't care what the Danes do, all he wants is the Safety for Wales and to keep his land Pure. He'll make the final call. Canute- He wants to show the God that humans dont need his benevolence and teachings anymore. They an create their own paradise. Thorfinn- He's holding onto his creed and blade to slay askeladd. He has no care for who holds the crown he's just there to follow the one and only way he has and always seeks. Thorkell- Kings and gods may change the odds they can keep their crown. He'll do whatever he feels is best for his thirst for as a warrior, even if it means taking the losing side.

I've watched this episode so many times and it never ceases to be amazing, but I think one of my favorite moments in the entire episode is when Canute finally drops the sword. It's a detail many don't comment on, but right before the sword hits the ground you actually see Canute's left hand reaching over and pulling his fingers off the sword. It's such a slow and purposeful action, as though every finger had been glued to the grip of the sword and he had to wrench them free. It's the last bit of shock before he manages to compose himself. He has straightened his back like Thorkell told him to, but he still had to let go of the sword finger by finger in order to regain his full composure. This entire episode is full of subtle moments like this, many of which you both noticed, but I think this one isolated shot of Canute's efforts to recover from killing someone for the first time, especially someone he had grown to trust and rely on, really tells such an interesting story.

WIT is too good at making season finales. Like some of the middle episodes were a bit uneven at times. But that final send-off shows you that they really care how their audience feels about the way things end. That it sticks the landing on its strongest foot.

Interesting seeing the way the anime interpreted the manga's flashback arc too. Definitely feels like the manga made the right call with that, with how certain moments land in sequence. Made me understand certain moments in the anime a bit better.

King Sweyn underestimated Askeladd's resolve. He couldn't imagine someone as cunning would readily sacrifice himself on the spot for Canute (he was so sure that Askeladd would choose to save Wales). How wrong he was. Canute is Askeladd's dream; the ideal hero who will save the world.

It is truly something special - its beautiful plot, storytelling, worldview, characterization, animation, soundtracks - Vinland Saga is something I've never seen before and never imagined. The scene in that episode played out like this, he walks towards the crown, cuts to him rushing up the steps onto the raise area, then it cuts to canute's back with the crown upon his head.

The reason the episode is called end of the prologue is that this season serves as a prologue setting the stage of two major characters going forward in the series: Thorfinn and Canute. With Thorfinns revenge being robbed and Canute becoming King or something

Re what Thorkell said: In Japanese, Thorkell basically just says "Sweyn is my ..." We know that me meant to tell Askeladd that he meant to say "I wanted to kill Sweyn," but he could've finished that statement with "Sweyn is my king" or something innocuous. Basically, what he said was vauge enough to not implicate him as still harboring regicidal intentions.

I think this idea of prologue fits Thorfinn very well actualy. After being trapped in this cycle of vengence/affection for Askelaad he's finally free to start his life. It is somewhat increadible how trapped he is during the whole season and how little maturation he's able to go through. It's a really slow process and it's crazy to think how much he will have to quickly adapt after the death of his mentor.

The thing with Ylva was actually in the manga. The anime only stuff was actually all the rest of episode 5. The thing they also changed was the reason Thorfin wasn't in the hall when Askelad kills Sweyn, and it really is better in the anime than the manga imo.

I like that askalad's lineage is backed up by the welsh. They know lady lydia was a genuine decendent of Artorious, so he got his affirmation of who he is, and his conflict between carrying that blood and the blood of his hated danes was truly amazing. I never believe Askalad would be the most in depth character in the series when he first came into the story. Just truly God Tier writing. Amazing to have a series so engaging when the main character is the least involved and developed in the entire story. Thats a tough way to start a story, but to truly pull it off is something special.

It's important to note that in the manga, right before he tells the men to take Thorfinn away, Floki thinks to himself that if he isnt careful Canute will take military control away from him. It was his little effort to gain control of the situation, and Canutes complete refusal to allow him to do so.

Askelad isn't just named after King Arthur with his middle name. Lucius Artorius Castus is the full name of the Roman commander from the 2nd century AD upon which King Arthur is most likely based. Askelad symbolically is King Arthur. The legend returned to defend his homeland in one final stand even if it was in name only!

i think that 'falling into madness' at the end of the prologue was perfect for the manga, since there was no huge gap between releasing the next chapter -- but for the anime, they probably wanted to make the end more dramatic/emotional and build that anticipation for the next season. i also think the manga did it better, but that dagger dropping scene was really special imo, made me tear up a bit thinking about the whole journey

To answer your question of how much season 1 covers of the manga, the publication is actually a double manga size so each book is basically two regular manga in 1 hardcover. With that said "End of the Prologue" is at the end of book 4 and book 11 came out like a month ago, there's plenty of story to tell still and hopefully the anime adaptation keeps it's way of presenting the original material, and hey the anime original stuff so far has been pretty good so here's hoping.

I'm guessing the ending shots are characters who the manga readers will recognize and anime-onlys are just supposed to wonder who they are. I don't think they are showing a time skip with characters we already know.

I would HIGHLY recommend you look up some panels from the original manga, while the anime did a great job adapting the source material it unfortunately didn't quite manage capture Makoto Yukimura's artwork

The author did do the flashback in the manga, it was a one page collection of images from the story to that point. Followed by the dagger on the ground. Do yourself a favor, do read the manga, right up to the end of the prologue. It's worth it.

oh great Odin thanks for vinland saga... i don't care if its only parted history and some fiction... i don't care if the main character didn't said more then few words in most of the show... i watched and learned and rised my curiousity to the ciling, i appreciate the details in the story, the many collors they gave to different characters and decitions made by great story teller. im proud to spend my time watching great show / story / world
