Jankey is a mother of four and lives in Bakoteh, Gambia - close to the largest dumpside in the country. With its more than 1 km2 size, coming with significant health risks as families are constantly exposed to toxic substances and waste.
A project by SOS Children's Villages works with families like Jankey's to improve their income and living conditions.
Today, Jankey can support a total of 13 people living in her household who depend on her. With the support of SOS Children's Villages, she founded her own business, selling her homemade ice cream at school and the mall. Her ice cream is widely popular and loved in her community.
