Soseong-ri: The South Korean village fighting the US military

Ай бұрын

Soseong-ri, South Korea, was a sleepy farming village before the arrival of the US military's Terminal High Altitude Aerial Defense (THAAD) missile system. While the South Korean government and the US military claim that THAAD will protect South Korea from North Korean attacks, activists and experts have long countered that THAAD is incapable of blocking the kinds of short-range missiles North Korea would use against South Korean targets in a hypothetical war. Instead, they charge THAAD's real purpose is to protect US military assets in nearby Okinawa and Guam. THAAD has also inflamed relations between South Korea and China, which has decried THAAD's radar system as a way for the US to spy on Chinese military activities. The Real News reports from Soseong-ri, South Korea, where village residents have fought since 2016 against the US military and their own government to stop THAAD.

i mean we are in the brink of war. Japan is threatened, China has been building war weapons in accelerating rate not to mention tensions in the seas are rising with the CCP blocking and attacking Philippine vessels with water cannons. Not to mention Taiwan, which the CCP is adamant on taking. If China attacks, Russia will follow (i mean they already are doing it with Ukraine) and in that North Korea would no doubt take advantage of the situation.

Which means they should know better then anyone why those THAAD sites have to be there guess maybe they don't understand the DPRK has lots of ballistic missiles aimed at the south and their rhetoric towards the south has been increasingly hostile. The sites aren't just defending US bases down range they are defending the entire region from two hostile powers that have thousands of ballistic missiles aimed at them. You know in 1991 the Philippines booted out US troops today they are screaming for the US to come save them from an overly aggressive Chinese Navy that protects their illegal fishing fleets. Which fish in Philippine territorial waters. Funny how fast nations have a change of tune when their asses ae on the line. Don't ya think? Make no mistake the only thing standing between a North Korean invasion of the South are those US troops and their backup in Japan. This is why we have Troops station there. The korean war proved it takes to long to mobilize the required assets into Asia so instead they chose to forward deploy them as rapid response force that could keep the DPRK busy till help from Japan and the US arrives.

Non-peace exists. Political leaders and governments consistently harbor disapproval towards the governance of other nations. They invariably have a reason for not resolving the issue. Yeah South Korea would have been wiped off the map if the U.S. didn't involve itself in the Korean war Korea could have been a whole different place and would probably be called KCP or Korean Communist Party you would see mass starvation and malnutrition which do happen just that its not recorded or shared, it was also thanks to the UN troops too that South Korea isnt apart of North Korea as of now as how North Korea is. But when the economy goes to shit because we let some country take over that country and now they control that area and the cost of living goes higher, you are going to have to blame yourself and not the president for being selfish, Yes its wrong to do this to elderly but you got to do what protects your interests. The world is a harsh reality, your lucky you have easy decisions like choosing Starbucks as your morning coffee or go to the store a buy some coffee. Some guys out there on missions to make sure your safe and some strategist on the other side of the world doesnt send some guy to bomb the place you happen to be at. For those guys out there on the field, if they get spotted by a local, they have to either silence him, tie him up and wish him the best in the wilderness, or try to bribe him but you dont know who he knows or who he is and he could compromise your mission making you and your team fall into a ambush. But just saying, yeah your opinion matters but actually give your opinions some thoughts.

North and South would be on friendly terms if it wasn't for America. I just came back from Seoul and it was an amazing place. My government does not speak for me, I wish the troops would come out of Korea entirely.

if democracy, they have the right to protest. they didn't even burn things like in France, why the police had to move them? Poor people, the greed of the leaders made the citizens suffer!

I grew up in Korea. As a white Canadian at age 5 or 6 they would say yankee go home. I’m in my 50s now and have lived in Asia longer than I have in Canada. And nothing has changed. I do miss my younger years. The university riots every year were the best. Nothing to get all bothers about.

@@user-ib3xp6ny9w One cannot hold the American military accountable for the request for protection against invasion made by the government of any nation. It is logical to consider which military forces elsewhere possess sufficient resources to repel the invasion. Your assumption that the United States is stealing their land or occupation is unfounded. You should read the articles to the same extent that it aids comprehension. The governments of all nations that made requests complied. The Philippines made a similar request to the United States, UK, and some countries help the islands due to China's control over the sea and pushing the Philippines’ border.
