Just freshly got my license 3 weeks ago and find Sota fascinating. So relieved to find this video because quite some hams tell you just need shortwave and 50 to 100 watts. Activated my first small mountain 3 days ago on 2m with a handheld and stay on 2m for now - just plan to get better 2m gear... 73s from the alps in OE.

Hello and welcome to the hobby. You really don't need HF, let alone 50-100 watts for SOTA! In fact the majority of my activations use a 2m handheld and 5 watts! If I use HF then I rarely use more than 10 watts :) Congratulations on getting your license and activating your first SOTA summit so quickly. 73 James M0JCQ

Awesome, what kind of antenna are you using? Im new in this hobby so in trying to learn a lot. Im getting my self a Ailunce HD1 when i get my license and a N9TAX antenna i think.

It's a vertical dipole for 2m. I purchased it from SOTABeams, but very easy to make yourself and good performance over a stock handheld antenna. Best of luck getting started! 73 James M0JCQ
