About the illness theory,this is something that i had already been thinking about,and didn't know other people also thought so. I wanted to add some things to it,the reasons why i think Sou might not be ok: 1-as you mentioned,how weak he is 2-when looking at 2018 Nankidai's tweets,i realised something interesting. He referred to Sou sometimes as the adult wearing winter clothes. It seems like him wearing such clothes is off even in YTTD. I feel like feeling so cold,being abnormal to the point of even Nankidai mentioning it, might be because of how weak he is/some illness 3- i was really worried for Sou in chapter 2. Not only was he hit on the head for the second time,but this is the chapter where he shows the most signs of being weaker than we think. a. Sou was resting way too much in chapter 2,as you mentioned b. You know the nightmare with Sara segment? Yeah,it was interesting seeing how Sou is afraid of Sara,but it was only after watching that scene again and again in gameplays that i finally understood what happened AFTER it. No one seems to pay attention to the part where he wakes up,i was kind of confused at it. He just woke up and is already starting a meeting? This didn't make sense. But then i payed attention to Kanna's lines. "Don't startle me all of a sudden...!" "You're all i have left, Sou..." "Please... don't suddenly collapse..." Sou wasn't sleeping,he passed out in the middle of starting his meeting. We can see in these lines how worried Kanna is of Sou's health. He is definitely not okay,and even Kanna was afraid of losing him. 4. Having a illness would explain his low chance of surviving. Like,maybe he could die due to it rather than by the death game in certain situations.

Oh my god i had never realised that the "we've always been friends" option sounds just like the way Midori talks. Just compare the "what are you dooooooing" line of Midori with Sara's. Also,where exactly does he talk about his parents? I never saw it when watching gameplays,maybe i skipped it

I've been waiting for this video to type a whole effing essay about Sou because I find him to be a very interesting character so here's my take on him now that we're past the reveals (SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY). So it basically all comes down to this First Trial of his, where the kidnappers decided they'd taunt him by telling him all about his 0% chance of winning this Death Game and showing him all of these statistics to back it up. This had a profound effect on Shin Tsukimi, who understandably wasn't eager to die. So he decided that if Shin Tsukimi had a 0% chance of winning the Death Game, then he would have to take on the entire character of another person in order to survive - this person of course being Sou Hiyori, the scheming two-faced bastard we've come to know and love(?). Shin/Sou made the assumption that the best way to survive the Death Game would be by manipulating the others around him in order to protect himself, while never trusting anyone else. This assumption is somewhat reasonable when you consider that, without knowing all the details, it would be hard to imagine the winner of something called a "Death Game" to be a trustworthy person. Thus, with this assumption, Shin decided to take on the character of Sou Hiyori, and to abandon his old personality in order to give himself a chance of survival. In the First Trial, Shin Tsukimi was not the only one whose percentage he took note of. He also took interest in the person who was most likely to win the Death Game, Sara Chidouin. Sou would never imagine that the person most likely to win the Death Game would be someone who was actually trustworthy and caring. This is why he made all of these devious machinations intended to reveal her "true character" as he imagined it would be. Sou truly believed that deep down, Sara Chidouin was a villainous person, just taking advantage of those around her in order to ensure her survival; perhaps he even believed her to be secretly taking delight in the senseless slaughter of the Death Game. It wasn't until it was too late that he realized that the person most likely to win the Death Game was someone who was trustworthy, someone who could be a leader. And by then his machinations have resulted in a situation that leads either to his death, or the death of the one person he cared most for within this game. There's a lot that's left up in the air with Sou's character. Just what was Shin Tsukimi like before the Death Game, and how much of that former personality shines through the cracks of his Sou Hiyori persona? Just why was it that Shin Tsukimi never won in the simulations? Did the simulated Shin Tsukimi also take on the persona of Sou Hiyori? Shin/Sou leaves a lot of questions in this story. So this whole thing is basically my take on Sou/Shin.I definitely wouldn't mind hearing other people's takes on the character though. For a character that I initially thought of as a Komaeda knock-off, he ended up being more interesting than I expected.

i'm very late, but this is so good!!! i'm a super big yttd fan, and i love to see analysis. shin being one of my favorite characters - midori is my favorite lmfao - and he's one of the most complex characters in the game. i think exploring shin and midori's past will be a vital part of ch3-2, no matter if shin is alive or if kanna is. of course, midori not only affected shin - as we can see with keiji and alice [also reko if we count the datamines] - but i feel like he had the most direct interactions, and probably was hurt the most by midori. this speedpaint is adorable, too!!! love these kids to death :)

one thing i love about the Shin lives route is how after Keiji rubs in Shin's face how Kanna would choose Sara over him he most likely lies about wanting to use Kanna to make Sara regret her decision and hate him more. Or at least that's what I thought about it lol

on a similar note, it can be assumed that Shin knew full well that Kanna would choose Sara over him. and therefore, some people think that Shin was insulting Kanna when he thought she had the Sacrifice to make her dislike him and feel less guilty about saving Sara over him (as well as trying to get others to vote Kanna to have her win)

Also one note: the Shin route is made to be the bad ending. The route the game itself doesnt want you to pick. That is why all the fucked up stuff happen in that route. Sara is truly made out to be a monster in that route. anyway love your work this was really long lol

It's honestly strange, I feel like due to the route system of YTTD I can't say I hate Sou for what he did to Sara because he also saves Sara in another route. It's the same character then and there so I think that he's understandably bitchy but is ultimately a good person when he's not trying to lie. Though that boy needs some therapy (all in the death game do, but Sou especially needed it even before it all happened)

She hated Shin but at the same time thought he was extremely interesting and wanted him to live to learn more about him. Which is exactly how I feel, but I adore his character and personality. Okay so I know I'm late to this video but I found something that could be interesting. Yesterday I watched this video (and really enjoyed it btw!) and like many was surprised by the "We've always been friends" option. Literally just now I was continuing replaying YTTD and happened to get to that part, so naturally I selected the option. However after the release of the newest sub-chapter, Sara's response is slightly different. I was confused because I remembered the classic Midori-style way of how she said "Sooou!", so I had to come back to this video to check it. But now she says: "Hold on now, what's this?! Sou! Old buddy, old pal! Haven't we always been the bestest of friends?!" I saved just before the conversation started so I was able to exit the game and replay it, just to check if the dialogue would alternate between Sara's new response and the one in the video (20:11). I tried many times and it was always this new response. To me it seems strange since it's basically just the same response but slightly reworded, but I wonder what made Nankidai go back and change it (presumably in the latest update?) It's strange because now she sounds slightly less like Midori (in my opinion) but we only really know what the in-game version of Midori is like. For all we know, he could have said this exact quote to Shin in the past, before the death game. Idk, it might be insignificant but I thought it was an oddly specific detail to change, so who knows, it could mean something. I guess we'll have to wait another year for a new update though :(

I don't think having parents that spoil you means you can't be a job hopper at all! If anything it makes it more likely, as certain degrees of spoiling can prevent you from developing as good life skills as others in order to be able to hold down a job. great point! the only reasoning i really had was that his parents might've been really anxious about Sou having a good, stable career. but true, Sou's social skills aren't exactly implied to be the best (e.g. he was alone after Midori left him so it kinda suggests that he wasn't very good at making friends, and Midori could've been his only one)

First of all i love this video, even since i begin to play the game, i was with the idea of "if i see another troublemaker in this game, i will punch it in the face" because i was tired of this kind of character but even with that, when i see Shin and all of his character in chapter 1, i couldnt really hate it because i knew that shin was different, is much more than an antagonist and the characters that is usually compared, I just hate some actions (like him being near Kanna, because Kanna is my favorite character and i dont want anything bad to her and also that she reminds me to Chihiro Fujisaki [My favorite character of all Danganronpa] but in the end of chapter 2 i really aprecciate the interaction between kanna and shin) of him and even in chapter 2 i didnt complete any minigame with shin because i dont want him to gain tokens. But its obvious that in the end of chapter 2 everything begins to make sense, i begin to understand Shin and feel really bad in part for him, in the final decision i was struggling for 10-15 minutes to choose (i never struggle that much with a decision before, and i am a person that i always struggle to make choices, even something so little like what to order in a restaurant) and i was in a vc with a friend and in that moment he ask me if i was fine because it even sound like I will cry or laugh like having a breakdown to decide. But in the end i choosed by emotion, i voted for Shin (i felt sad because i couldnt say that i dont hate him) but i was so happy every time i saw Kanna in chapter 3 and that shin in the end was happy, and it feels so good to know that i really sastified with my choice (I am a Emotional Route enjoyer) and dont have regrets of that. After seeing this video and Shin past actions, i can relate to him a lot (I cant express why, because it will be too difficult + english is not my first language and i am struggling a lot to write this and also sorry for any mistake in my writing). I dont like to use the word relate in media or characters, but i think that i can use it in this comment without misinterpretations and with the hard moment that i am now, it is comforting to be able to identify with such a complex character and that at a certain point it calms you to endure the moment. Also i saw the description, I am very happy that you were finally able to upload the video because it is really good, especially because the same thing happened to me a few months ago with a video in which I had the script finished and it was a theory of a video game that I love, but it has remained a long time proposed due to the audio recording, I do not like my voice and I struggled too much to pronounce the words, it took so long and with so much noise in the background, also I never liked my voice, I decided not to continue the project for shame and I still have trouble speaking and I still can't stand my voice, so it makes me very happy to see someone with my situation that was able to overcome it and it was excellent, maybe it helps me to continue it.

that's fair. i like both routes in their own ways- Kanna's is the more happy one, but Shin's has that extra tension which i find super interesting. depends what mood i'm in

he does share the similarity of being a lying antagonistic character, but i think they're's a lot more to him than that. his motives were very different to Kokichi's, and imo Sou was a bit better written to him
