Soul is one of my all time favorite movies ever! Partly because I'm also a pianist but mostly because it just hit so close to my personal beliefs. That you don't need a great job, good education, be good looking or talented or even have a purpose to have a beautiful, meaningful life. Life is beautiful and meaningful as is. The rest is icing on the cake.

There are too many similarities. Black male pianist, and then going to another realm? And there are more similarities too. Exact phrases that are in my book that are in that movie. Even though she didn't get much screen time, I have to say that Angela Bassett's character was my favorite. Especially when she gave that piece of advice in the form of a story. In that single scene was so much wisdom, experience and hardships faced and overcame. Wonderfully written and performed. This movie is one of my all time favorites.

Oddly, I thought of this movie a lot in the months before my brother died. I always kinda thought about this movie when hearing about someone I know dying, but the symbolicness preceeding my brother's death is chilling. Joe reminded me of my brother, who tragically died unexpectedly.
