When you have New York as your setting for a movie about living life as you want, iiiiiits kind of a waste xD Almost like this movie was a foil to Tomorrowland, where I was dissappointed the movie went SO LITTLE in it when it was the major theme compared to Soul where, ironicaly, didn't spend much into the lands of souls but into the real world where the story fit so well.

Joe didn't die because that way the message wouldn't have worked. The story tell us that life is beautiful and we need to LIVE IT (with its ups and downs). By staying alive at the end, the public can start living with him.
@secondsein77494 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Not to mention that if he die, it might send the wrong message to the wrong people. A lot of suicidal people think that people around them would be happier if they died and this movie might have enforced that message if Joe died. So yeah, Joe living sends the message that you need to live for yourself as well, and not just for others.

Exactly! If Joe choose to go to the Great Beyond at the end, the movie would be against it's own message and it wouldn't work like the way it is.

Personally, I saw the ending as Joe finally realising he doesn't really love being this great musician that he always thought he wanted to become. His calling in life is to become a mentor. To inspire others. And at the end of the movie, he finally gets his second chance to really put it in practice back on earth. You could call it "learning to appreciate what he has", but I think it is deeper than that. He realises that what he has is the only thing that can truly make him happy. And now, he gets to be truly happy about that.

What resonated the most with me in this movie is the whole "spark" plotline. It's kind of how I've found life works. You just have a thing that is yours. It took me at least a decade to figure out what I was about. And now, I know exactly that I've always been an embedded systems engineer. I really want to be creative, to design and build machines that do something. And looking back, it's always been a part of me. As for the ending of Soul, I felt that Joe finally found out he's not meant to be a great musician. He is a great musician, but his spark is actually mentorship. And it takes this movie for him to realise it. Playing for others is what he thought he'd love, but he doesn't really love it. He enjoys to get the opportunity, but it's not his actual life's wish. And at the end of the movie, he finally becomes his ultimate self: the best mentor he could ever be. He deserves his second chance so he can finally put it into practice during his life. You could call it "learning to appreciate what he has", but I think it is deeper than that. He realises that what he already has is the only thing that can truly make him happy. And now, he gets to be truly happy about that.
@Swiftbow4 жыл бұрын
I think you should watch it again. One of the main points was that there IS no one spark. Life is about living it, and enjoying it. There are things you are good at, but they should not consume you to the point of ignoring everything else. That is what Joe was doing. He was so obsessed with getting "the gig" that he was forgetting everything else in life.
@lelelew27354 жыл бұрын
@@Swiftbow true and critic is right it was a cope out ending I was ok with lol. They were really extreme about accepting fate and cheating death then " here you go another chance " kind of odd. But i probably would've felt a way if he died without truly living. But I wonder what the message would've conveyed if they had the darker ending in real life you only get 1 ( except of you believe in reincarnation) so him accepting death and realizing he lived life would've gave the message of living life to the fullest more.

After watching the film AGAIN recently, it hit me: 22 ALWAYS wanted to go to Earth. But she was so heavily berated by the people meant to INSPIRE her that she just went "fck it" and hid her insecurities with this mask of indifference and aloofness, and cold attitude towards Earth. But when she finally got to LIVE it herself, she realized she was indeed always ready, and always meant to go LIVE a life-she just felt like she was never good enough to do so before meeting Joe. It just goes to show that while you might not think it in the moment, words CAN hurt, and words HAVE power. The pen is mightier than the sword, and the tongue is sharp as a blade. This is a Pixar movie that REALLY showcases the animation is NOT just for children and it's high time western audiences AND studios realize that.

Yeah, I personally like how it was a step back from cynicism that I see about just accepting death all the time rather than cherishing every chance you get to live. After growing up in a deeply religious household where death and the afterlife was on everybody's tongue, it's nice seeing a move shamelessly celebrate the little things in life and how ultimately people deserve kindness and second chances. It might've fit more if the theme was around the acceptance of death, like in UP where from the intro it carried that message, but here I think it works best that he got that second chance. Of course I would've loved to see him become a mentor but either way I feel satisfied.

It's my new mantra. It reminds me to enjoy every second that I'm alive. And it's so inspiring knowing this is how Joe is living his life from here on out. We get the chance to now live life without searching for any reward (because life itself IS the reward) but if Joe just straight-up died, he would've been robbed of that chance. Here’s the issue with wanting Joe to stay dead. With him accepting death, he’s leaving behind his friends and family who would be devastated and who knows, probably assume the worst and that his cause of death was self harm. It's also an asshole move to making a movie about learning to enjoy life, then killing off the main character. That's not inspirational, that's a scare tactic.
@firekirby1234 жыл бұрын
The issue is that, while it may make for a more satisfying end to the movie, it's undermining part of the message of the movie in the process. Part of the beauty of this movie is how maturely it tackles some of the more serious elements, with death being a BIG one of those. Death can be abrupt, and isn't always going to wait for you to tie up all lose ends. You likely won't even be able to say goodbye to all you love in the end. But that's life, and accepting that will help put a bigger emphasis on ensuring every moment spent with those you care about is enjoyable. Will your death bring tragedy and grief for those you've touched in life? Sure, but that doesn't erase the moments you had with them, nor the impact you had on their life. (which, side-note on that point, Jazz is kinda born out of pain and sorrow, that girl could also very easily wind up using it as an outlet, while I see giving it up entirely would have been the more unlikely result)

@@firekirby123 I think this is an interpretation thing because to me, while death was a part of what the movie was talking about, it was not the main focus/message. The main focus is what was mentioned above, learning to enjoy life in the moment for what it is rather than striving for some grand purpose, and it makes more sense from a narrative perspective to have the ending align with the main message of the story. They could've still made it work like "you should enjoy life while you can before you're at the end of it", but also like what was mentioned above, that feels more like a threat than the inspirational message I'm assuming Pixar is going for. So all of this considered, I think ending the movie with the main character now having a chance to live his life aware of the good in it fits perfectly with the overall message of the movie, even if it elevates the seriousness of death as part of it. I guess you could consider it a tradeoff.
@firekirby1234 жыл бұрын
@@lucky8X8 I wouldn't go so far as to say death is the main theme, just an important throughline that the movie uses to illustrate the main theme. It's still an important topic though. Still, I think that's another interesting thing about this movie; because it doesn't explicitly spell out anything but the core moral, there's enough room for interpretation and intellectual discussion on the smaller topics the movie brings up. As far as Joe's death being a scare tactic though, I don't particularly agree. Especially if the movie had a different epilogue. For example, say about 15 years later after Joe dies, we see 22 in a music class being taught by a new music teacher: the girl from Joe's old class who followed in her teacher's footsteps and wants to share her love of music. Of course, despite everything, 22 wouldn't be all that interested, until the teacher starts bringing up Joe, and starts playing a cover of his music on the trumpet. I don't think 22 should necessarily remember her time as a spirit, but I can easily see her being moved and feeling some sense of nostalgia, and as the class leaves, she pauses to ask a passing question about Joe, the teacher comments that he made an impact on her life, and the movie ends. THIS would have been a stronger end to me. Not because Joe dies, but because we can see that regardless of Joe's untimely death, his life was still meaningful to those around him, and his memory and passion still lives on despite his passing. This would also make a great way tk end the movie because, rather than being a parallel to a scene part way through the movie, this scene would be a direct parallel to the opening scene of the movie, continuing on the cycle of life and death theme without losing focus of the core theme of the movie. I'm not unhappy with the ending we got, but I do think there were better ways to cap off the story.

The problem with him having had a good life is that he thinks he had a good life until he looks back on it and realizes how sad it was. He focused too much on teeny tiny moments (which is good) but didnt realize that he was actually unhappy until he's faced with the number of bad. I don't think the ending would work if he died.
@beffygetsgood63154 жыл бұрын
I think you hit the nail on the head. If he'd been all about going back to fix his life and he realized it was good all along the accepting death ending would have worked. But since he was all about how great it was until he saw it in the hall it made more sense to go back.
@britishpie76654 жыл бұрын
With that constant message of the movie saying to "focus on the little things in life," for the movie to suddenly say "accept death" would've been a little abrupt imo Plus you sort of expect that, so its nice the movie experts that leaves on a open note for us to guess what happens to Joe
@goodmanticore4 жыл бұрын
@@beffygetsgood6315 I actually found it very refreshing that it wasn't that he was unsatisfied with his life as the reason for wanting to go back and "try again." He wanted to go back even when he thought he was satisfied with how things went/were going.

I think the “mentor” ending thing would’ve been way to predictable. But the ending for me is perfect, he still could be the mentor at the school if he wanted, or the musician he always wanted to be. He can choose one or both now that he can take his second chance.

I actually like the "getting a second chance" ending here even though like Doug I often find such endings to be trite. It really didn't feel like that this time. I guess because the film did something that I feel doesn't happen much in family films- the character getting the goal and realizing it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. The film takes time to really let that resonate.
@caldw6153 жыл бұрын
I think it resonates with different people for different reasons. Some older viewers might think him dying would be the better ending because they themselves are a bit closer to death and perhaps dwelled on the inevitivility of it more already to be content with it, while younger (like people in their late teens-Early 30's) might prefer him going back with this new perspective on life as a comfort for those who have anxiety about their future. Again it might be the other way around too with some older viewers maybe feeling more like they maybe "wasted" their lives but remember the good things and change their mind and so on. For me personally I've had a lot of anxiety about my future and also felt like I perhaps wasted some of my younger years because of those anxiety's but then I think about where I am now and the good things I do have that maybe I didn't initially seek out or have as an "endgoal" but am content with now.
@BloodwolfAssassin4 жыл бұрын
One thing I appreciate about the ending, we never actually learn what Joe ended up doing with his second chance. Did he pursue his career as a musician or did he the lucrative teaching job, becoming content with the life he had. I feel like learning Joe's Ultimate fate would have made the movie lesser.

I'm fine with him living. I don't see any point in him learning that lesson if it's too late for it to matter.

He could have been a mentor and learned his lesson still
@tramrant4 жыл бұрын
Both endings would fit the movie. But if it was indeed a lesson to him, movie's actual ending fits better, cause the point of the lesson is to learn from it and move on with your /life/ with wisdom from it. If he's dead there's no 'lesson' for him. But in any case there's still a message in this movie close to buddhism's philosophy(not the reincarnation part) of finding bliss in accepting the life for what it is.

What's ironic about your statement about the ending was that Pete Doctor stated that Joe going to the great beyond or becoming a mentor was one of many drafts they wrote before coming to this ending. 😊
@Lunautau1014 жыл бұрын
I’m honestly happy he didn’t die. I wanted him to get back and have his second chance. But either way, I felt like he learned his lesson. Die, but still know that your life didn’t amount to nothing after all, or live and go live life to the fullest, making more of those mundane but wonderful memories. Plus, I had major anxiety over my goals and “what am I doing with my life”, but by the end of the movie, seeing Joe get that second chance and seeing the lesson both he and 22 learned, gave me much needed hope and lessened my anxiety a little. Edit: I forgot to mention I talked to a friend about it and she said she didn’t want to watch because it would give her an existential crisis, and I feel like this is the kind of movie you need to watch WHEN you have an existential crisis.

I have to say, I got early on that he would get his second chance legally, as a "present", for his help with 22. Truthfully, if he died in the end, it would be way too cynical and depressing, and kind of erase the point of his whole movie journey, in accepting that "living is life". He practically finally started living at the end of the movie. But yes. A fantastic movie! Loved it ;)

but when you think about it, his body was still "livable", he was in the hospital with his heart still beating but in a coma, so just like people's souls detach when they are "in the zone", I guess the same can happen in near-death experiences, but I think Jerries never figured it outso they can let souls of comatoses return to their bnodies once its in living condition.

Good point there but in general I don’t think he did die. He was into playing the piano so it pretty much transfer him back to the soul land or whatever. Honestly looking back at it, that would be a horrible way to die... playing the piano and then your heart just stop and now your back on the elevator to the great beyond.

Never saw this movie having a "accepting death" message, especially how it focuses much more on "appreciating the little things." Would've been a pretty abrupt message imo Like yeah it would've made the ending more powerful but... its so expected lol, plus it gets us thinking more about what Joe is going to do with his life.
@Swiftbow4 жыл бұрын
It would have been expected, yeah, and would have annoyed me. I don't think it would have made it more powerful. Killing characters is too often used merely as a means to get an emotional response. That doesn't make it BETTER. Total agree on your other points!
