Terry said in the movie that big momma made her keep her head in the books…… AKA she was always treated differently than the other 2 sisters and that’s why she acted the way she did! Her childhood probably sucked. Max may have been the most level headed but she had faults. If Terry threw money in her face than she definitely threw her marriage in her face. Bird was the baby and seemed to get a pass for all of her poor decisions.

I’m on Keenan side 100% I think she throw it in their face that she got money is bc she’s tired of being the ATM (automatic Terri money). Both sisters can go about their lives bc they know Terri will be there to pay. I mean they just expected her to pay Big Mama hospital bills without even consulting her, when she already paying for Byrd shop and Big mama house on top of her own house (even tho Big mama was hoarding funds). Not to mention she got cheated on twice and one involved her own damn sister that she has to be reminded of the rest of her life, sitting across the dinner table. She has every right to be bitter. Why can’t ppl see that?! Team Terri Mos Def.

And what does the family do after she dies? They get together for a Sunday dinner and eat the same food that just killed Big Mama. The SAME FOOD. They didn't learn a lesson, nobody went on a diet, and that's the end of the movie.

The plot of the movie is families staying together through anything, the food is just a part of the togetherness. The food might've played a part in her demise but it was her overall lifestyle of lack of exercise and stubbornness that did her in. Everyone else in that family seemed to be fairly fit.

She probably would've made him feel inferior for making less money and/or he would've felt insecure himself. The biggest problem in most families like this is that everyone leans on one person to do everything for them. This sort of dynamic becomes symbiotic since said person develops a savior complex and becomes resentful of the people they love. The family was pretty trife to put all their trust into Terry like that, but at the same time she did it to herself. Sometimes you gotta let the people you love walk on their own or else you become their crutch. I see it not just in our community (although it happens a lot) but in many other families as well. It's like that one person in the family who makes it out, but still does things for their family out survivor's remorse. Rather than doing everything for them, they should offer guidance and counsel. Teach them how to fish rather than giving them one. Because if one postpones their own dreams and happiness for others, that breeds bitterness and disdain for the people they're supposed to love.

I can 100% see Mr. Baker's point. From a storytelling perspective, a good protagonist is flawed and driven by some internal conflict but also grows. Terri is the only character that has character growth. If we're being honest, she was the only character thats layered. From the whole Terri/Kenny thing, Terri was always ambitious (you can tell that from the writing) she would have pushed Kenny to be whatever big best thing he could be. Which by itself ain't a bad thing. I think the issue is (and the reason him and max work) he didn't have the same driving goals. I think he's really happy with being a family man. That wouldn't have been enough for Terri and he would've lost something he really desired. Also, Terri did get the call from work, and then called the cousin from the shop. Honestly, I bet Terri's first husband was an driven/ambitious professional like herself and miles. And I think like miles he changed the plan, started wanting kids or change careers but probably the kids thing. But HONESTLY!.. (promise I'm finished after this) they was all trash 🗑 but I guess that's family?

@@KeenanBakerComedian I don't see the Faith character as being vulnerable or a victim. In the scene before they did it, the two were celebrating her getting the dance job when she mentioned her intentions to get her own place. Miles had suggested she was moving out due to the way Teri was treating her. IMO she made a move on Miles due to a part of her old freaky self returning as well as a part of her possibly wanting to get back at her cousin. Faith also may have felt like since Miles was the only one in that family being nice to her she should repay him in the only way she understood too.

Great discussion, Its not true that Teri would started a fight with Max because during the first dinner scene, Bird asked everyone if they wanted to try her fish cakes that she made and everyone said their plate was full lol. But Max went on to say "thats ok Bird because we all know you can do some hair and we know Teri cant cook nothing" THEN that's when Teri responded to her about the reason she didn't cook is because she was in the books and became a successful lawyer. It was Teri who was on the Defense.

Hot take or not, the only one I agree with is man in the orange sweatshirt. Terri is 100% the victim of a toxic, dysfunctional family of users. Maxine stabbed her in the back, her boyfriend two timed her, her mama actually allowed Maxine to keep dating him and nobody seemed to care at all about how that made Terri feel. This is why I think Terri should've cut her family off after going to college. Then her husband and cousin stab her in the back they're allowed to keep showing up to Sunday dinner every week again with no regard for Terri's feelings. There was no accountability for anybody in that movie for what they did to Terry. Maxine, her husband, Miles and Faith all got a pass, which has never sat right with me. Maxine as a protagonist or "the better person" is laughable to me because I saw her as a master manipulator.
