At first, I didn't think that the younger audience would understand the movie like adults or even preteens would. However, 2020 has probably introduced more younger people than ever to the concept of death at an early age. I'm certain A LOT of parents had to talk with their kids about why Black Panther won't be in any more MCU films (at least the Chadwick version that is). Sadly, a lot of kids have lost friends, family, teachers and loved ones due to COVID so that gave them even MORE experiences with death. I think 'Soul' is gonna hit home to many viewers of ALL ages. I don't know if I can sit and watch it on Christmas of all days, but I'll be sure to watch it before 2021.

The spark is just anything that inspires you to want to live. The whole point of Joe misunderstanding the spark to be his purpose is so that he can learn the purpose of life is just to live it.

Every other mentor tried to convince her she had to find something she could be good at to live and that scared her from going to life and being useless in it, but living as/with Joe gave her the chance to see that life IS something worth living, whether or not you have that ONE thing that defines you. I really would love to say this to Chris, because I felt exactly like he did through most of the movie. It wasn't until the Picaso Apple product spirit people said "It's not about finding purpose or greater meaning, you humans think so small." I think that their idea that is that people's personalities are a combination of inherent individualism and building their own individual experiences themselves. No one has a destiny or a purpose but rather a part of them that inspires themselves to live. The barber says he wanted to be a veterinarian but found a happy life cutting hair, his "spark" isn't either of those two professions but rather his drive to care for them in the first place. 22 couldn't find a reason to live from just watching or listening to the greatest minds talk about life, she needed to feel it. What she felt wasn't music or anything spectacular but rather just the breeze of an ordinary day. The thing that sparked her was just the feeling of feeling itself. I'm going in circles here probably sounding crazy but I think what the movie is trying to say is that "Soul" isn't purpose, it is feeling. The funny little gum drop creatures need to find something that makes them feel and that sparks them into wanting to live.
@thepineappledude84873 жыл бұрын

@KevinWidesouls3 жыл бұрын
Yea basically agreed. The point is that you can certainly have big dreams, and you may even think you have a singular purpose, but don’t get too caught up in those things because it’s the daily living and experience of life itself that matters most. In fact, if you do get too caught up in a singular “purpose,” as opposed to the general “spark” that makes you want to experience life in the first place, you might end up like a lost soul. You don’t want to get caught up in a mindset where your self-worth and value is determined by a singular “purpose” or goal; if you do, you may miss out on the little things that surround you, and even if you reach that goal you may realize that it isn’t as fulfilling or euphoric as you originally thought it would be (I.e. when Joe played the gig and didn’t feel any different afterwards). I thought the sax player’s anecdote about the fish, as well as Jerry’s line about humans thinking “small” were great too and really hammered these points home.
@vtaylor213 жыл бұрын
I don't know about not having a purpose aspect, and I need to look at the movie again to see what happened. When I first watched it, it seems to be saying purpose is not based on identity. Joe saw his purpose in what he does (music), and he based his purpose on how he identified himself as a musician. However, he wasn't fulfilled when he got his big shot. At the end of the movie, it showed (to me) that purpose is not based on your attitude or what you like to do. Is based on how a person lives life. What they do or how they act may radiate their purpose in life, but they don't define someone’s purpose. 22 found meaning (purpose) when it experienced life, even though it was still scared of going back.
@lunacouer3 жыл бұрын
This is definitely one of those "Ok, let me think about this" movies for me. Can't help it - I've got a logical trait slapped on my chest. 😂 I felt like the personality thing, the "nature" part in "nature vs. nurture" thing, is just how you'll see and interact with the world. The spark is what helps you connect with life itself. So for Joe, with his particular set of traits, he might've heard music in the Great Before and went "That's it!" It didn't mean it was his purpose in life - just that it was the particular thing that made him want to be here. It didn't even have to be jazz - that just happened to be the first time he felt the spark, the spiritual connection. But the particular personality they have is how it'll all be interpreted. Like for the megalomaniac blobby one, the spark might've been leading, but the megalomania trait would've taken it into "dominate others" territory. Joe might've had a "piano hands" trait, lol, so that's what he gravitated to, instead of singing, or the guitar, or drums, or bass, or, or, or... And Joe might've even been a lost soul, in his obsession with making music his full-time career instead of just...being. Just like the hedge fund manager (isn't that appropriate after this week 😂) needed help breaking out of his obsession with "Make. More. MONEY", Joe needed to break out of his obsession too. But he needed a huge journey with 22 to do that. Phew, this was a good one, Pixar.
@lelelew27352 жыл бұрын
Honestly this movie could be a root in curing anxiety the lost soul part reminded me of mental health issues people face that keeps them from just living life. One of the things I found fascinating about 22 is how it didn't have the trauma yet and negative experience in its life yet to keep it from 100% being themselves..ripped pants who cares ! Because no memory of embarrassment and societal expectations which helps you live life easier. Which in itself kind of sends the message our pure souls are somewhat tainted by traumas in life and societal expectations / ego that comes along with it

Now, finally seeing it, I'll back Korey up, Chris is wrong. Like Joe he's mistaking what the spark is. You have an innate personality and a spark, or inspiration, that brings it all together, but it doesn't determine your purpose in life, the thing you're meant to do. That spark though can become an obsession that prevents you from living. It's literally what the movie was trying to tell you. All because Joe's spark was jazz doesn't mean his purpose was to become a jazz musician. Maybe his love of jazz is meant to inspire people like Curly and Connie to become musicians themselves and being a teacher is his purpose. TL;DR Chris hates black people
@mrcritical67513 жыл бұрын
Yeah when I was watching the movie I thought Joe’s purpose was to teach, sure it can be frustrating teaching a class full of kids who don’t give a crap but when he sees students like Connie and Curley who show actual honest to god passion and talent you can see the passion and joy in his eyes unlike when he’s playing with Dorothea where he’s having fun but in the end it’s meaningless

He said that the (presumably white) barbershop most of his fellow downtown bankers used to frequent back in the day also had an empty chair people were scared to get cuts from. I guess when you nail the specifics of a story it ends up being more universal than even the storyteller realizes.

It’s not a contradiction. It’s an addition. The message stayed true. You have predetermined persona types. You’ll see this as you take care of kids. Then, the spark developes, which makes the whole package. Even then, you can still change, especially if you find yourself in that lost soul realm.

Not to get freaky but 22 is considered a number of mastery in the “life path” numerology, which works in a spiritual sense with this movie. The number 2 is the number of partnership, so it could also mean that the partnership between the 2 of them is mutually beneficial (two 2s) and lead them both to master the meaning of life. But I smoke sometimes But Pixar definitely had a reason for choosing 22, they put thought into every detail. It’s really cool

I really was touched by this movie. It made me think. In 2020, it made me feel grateful for my life and was a great reminder to appreciate life. So glad it was a mostly black cast that told this story, it made it feel more real for me Beautiful artwork, animation, writing and music 🥰 Ohhhh and that Knicks joke!!!! 10/10 I was cracking up for real 😂🤣🤣🤣

Chris' opinion of the personality thing is kind of explained by real personality science. They say that we are most likely "us" due to both nature and nurture. We have pre-determined traits based on genetics, but we of course also develop things shaped by our environment. The film does well with explaining that element in its own way. I guess he just didn't fully grasp it.

This movie reminds ne of how important background music is in movies or music is in general. I loved how in many scenes like the barbershop, the seamstress shop, and many others theres just music playing in the background on a radio. It added extra to the setting that i really enjoyed. The barbershop scene in particular was especially enjoyable. Much like the Peanuts cartoons, this movie makes me appreciate Jazz more as well. It made me tear up and the message this movie has is one i could have used when i was going through a depressive episode when i was a teenager and feeling like my life was meaningless.

I think I can clear up the issued at the end of the vid. The great before while it does give you a personality and quirks that defines you it doesn’t set out a direct path for your life, the movie shows that no matter your personality you ultimately decide what experiences you have and those experiences and the way you see the world yourself ultimate define who you are. The great before is giving you the materials and tools but you have to build the house yourself and learn from your own mistakes so no I don’t think the movie contradicts itself since the great before gives you the starting steps but doesn’t show you the whole path

I don't think it was about finding your spark but appreciating just being alive and living for each moment. My favorite scene in the whole movie was the barber shop scene and joe realizes that all he ever talked about was jazz and never about how other people were or how their life was going, that just because one specific dream wasn't achieved, life lead his barber to happiness still.

Regarding that last exchange... Spoilers . . . Spark and purpose are two different things in the film, and one of the central concepts is that Joe Gardner mistakes his spark for his purpose. Glad Korey called this out. Couldn't really get into it without spoilers though
