Many years ago in the year 2000 my mom, on a complete whim probably on a random Tuesday, picked Soul Reaver out of a sale bin in a Toys R Us store and gave it to me. Little did she realize she introduced me to a game series that was, is, and will always be my favorite of all time for so many reasons. I'll never forget being blown away by the voice talent when I started it up and watched the opening FMV as I was so used to other games - if they even had proper voice work - having less serious and more "Saturday Morning cartoon" type of voicework. (The irony is not lost on me that Michael Bell, Tony Jay and other talent from this series actually voiced SO MANY "Saturday Morning Cartoons"!) This cast of voices enhanced an already interesting story heavy game which had a Shakespearian script and a very small intimate cast of characters that were all interesting in their own right, even the bad guys. In all my years I've never played another game like the Legacy of Kain series and I am absolutely LOVING this remaster and all the unearthed extras, including being able to PLAY AND EXPLORE THE UNCOVERED CUT CONTENT. It's barebones in many respects and I would be surprised if it garners any younger fans due to its aged clunky nature, but for those of us that were OG fans this is AMAZING to have and it's nothing short of a type of playable museum piece. I'd love a proper full remaster as I do feel this series deserves it (with the original voice talent preferably... no one can voice Raziel and Kain better than Michael Bell and Simon Templeman!) but I am beyond thrilled to have this at least. The ability to replay SR 1 and 2 without dragging out my PS2 or Dreamcast is worth it in and of itself!

Nothing makes you feel ancient quicker than seeing people talk about playing an old game as a childhood memory and realizing you were 30 when you played it at launch. On the Dreamcast, no less. The original Soul Reaver is a special game for me. Being able to travel freely through the world, going back and forth to unlock new areas and find secrets was a new thing back then. The sense of freedom and exploration was amazing. One of the few games I've played through more than once. I love the series but was always disappointed the later games moved towards being more linear. I hope if there is a sequel to Defiance it takes after SR1.

I myself don't get the hate of the newer gamers about brick/crate puzzles. I loved them back in the day and it made the game more immersive and made us take a break from all the killings and use our brains other than just thinking of thousands of ways to shoot your enemy and just roaming around the map aimlessly. The fact that those same newer players love Minecraft and Roblox which are very primitive looking games and don't mind building, breaking and pushing things around still boggles me.

We would always quote the game and reenact scenes. We downloaded the soundtracks and would listen to them for hours. I remember when I was sent a survey via email about a potential remake/remaster years ago. I didn't know if it was going to happen but I prayed it would. I answered all the questions in the survey thoughtfully and with great detail. I practically left them essay length responses. "This needs to be done this way. Don't change this. Keep this the same". I'm proud to say that everything I asked for they gave me. I highly doubt I was the sole person they listened to but I hope my voice and opinion played a part. So far I have been having so much fun replaying these. Brings back so many memories. I only wish my brother was still around to experience it, too. He would've loved it.

I loved the Soul Reaver games but this is a slap in the face to fans. If a game is 10 years older or less...then a remaster is ok but when a game is 20+ years old....it really should've been remade from the ground up. With today's hardware, I bet the game would be really dark/gritty. Talk about opportunity missed. Maybe some of the OG fans will play this but I don't see any younger gamers are going to be interested in this. The graphics and gameplay are extremely dated.
@ErykDante12 сағат бұрын
I noticed some people saying that they might be testing the waters to see if people are still interested in the series before fully committing. Especially after what happened to the multiplayer game called Nosgoth which tried to reintroduce the world. There also was a modern version of Legacy of Kain called Dead Sun which was cancelled mid development. I think that if this remastered release does well, we might get better stuff in the future.

What i find a bigger slap to the face is the fact that the most annoying and obsessive LoK fan was the director for this nonsense. As though Raina Audron is the gatekeeper to the series or something. She and her weird husband act like they created the whole universe from scratch or something in their minds and guard it like there is no tomorrow. I'd love to have seen a proper release without obsessive modders being involved.

This is just a huge dose of nostalgia. These were my favourite games from childhood. Probably the one franchise I most wanted a remaster for. The light touch was the perfect amount of remaster. They're still the games I loved but better in the right ways.

That opening FMV for Soul Reaver 1 is beautiful. My friends thought it was a ps3 game when they saw it
@sor9017 сағат бұрын
it's crazy right? I played it for the first time in 1997. I would of been about 10 years old. but I remember seeing that FMV for the first time and thinking about how great it looked. when I saw the HD cleanup for the first time last night I was struck again by how well that FMV still looks today.

Glad you covered this, this series needs so much more attention. It is one of, if not the best writing in video games imho. I have played all the games in the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver/Blood Omen series and this is a fantastic early holiday present. The remake is exactly what you said, it's not perfect, but it is an AMAZING upgrade to a masterpiece of voice acting, literature and story telling overall. I hope this gets the series the spotlight it deserves.

Let's be honest the great thing about this is that it's a PC title and thus it will be modded with updated graphics updated physics updated weapons even possibly expanded storyline that is what's great about this it's cool to have the original but the game needs a total overhaul and modders will get it done

Damn you, I might have to get a gaming Pc now. Lol

I usually keep my games vanilla, but if some passionate modder overhauls the graphics for this game, man... it's gonna be an instant download.

thing is...the director for this game is a lok modder and nothing more. She didn't do very well either.

Played this with all the classics of the time. Lara, Snake, Tony Hawk, Gran Turismo… Then, I took a long break from gaming. When I picked up Dark Souks 3 for the first time about ten years ago, this game came flooding back from my memory, especially with the souls flying into you. Once it goes on sale, I'll pick them up again.

My dad brought this game home one day for the PS1 when I was about 6 years old. The game was ahead of its time, but it was also very unclear where to go. There was not a single indication on where to go and the map is huge. I think we got about less than halfway into the progression and then we gave up. About 10 years later I remembered the game, emulated it and fully played through it. I think I still needed to double check within a walkthrough on KZbin twice, because it's really unclear where to go. Other than that, it's an unforgettable game without a doubt.

So much nostalgia from this video! Remember playing it on PS1 and changing the world just to see the differences that would happen. I would always run around for a spear or a weapon like it to impale all the enemies! Goodbye adult life, I’ll see you in a few days.

Raziel has been my Discord PFP for a long time now. The original Soul Reaver blew my little 14 year old mind when I first played it. To this day it amazes me that the PS1 could do the world melting shift from the physical to the astral plane. It also holds a special place in my gaming pantheon because Soul Reaver 1 came out on PS1 on my birthday. Nice little b-day present from Eidos and Crystal Dynamics

This game was way over my head when I first played it when I was a kid on my Dad's Dreamcast. I know it doesn't look like much visually in 2024, but I got lost in this world for so long when I was a kid. The lore, the acting, the characters. The series added a few $5 words to my young vocabulary at the time.

Yes it's so good! I first played Soul Reaver when I was 8! Absolutely my favourite game and series! It's so good to be able to play these two on modern consoles. The new textures look great, and I love the photo mode!

When it comes to voice acting, why is Tony Jay so often overlooked in discussions? His performance is nothing short of legendary. In my opinion, he absolutely steals the show with his deep, resonant, and uniquely raspy voice. His ability to infuse every line with a mix of gravitas and menace elevates the entire experience, making him the standout star of the game. His voice isn’t just a tool it’s a masterful storytelling instrument that commands attention and brings an unparalleled depth to the character. It's time more people recognized and celebrated his incredible contribution to voice acting! R.I.P. Tony... we will miss you.

played all of them (blood omen, soul reaver 1/2, defiance) as a kid/teenager. Very special games in my heart with a truly unique atmosphere, ESPECIALLY the OST and its gloomy, dark, eerie, and even melancholic moods.. Perfect games for winter season !

THis remakes are AWESOME. The only thing Soul Reaver 1 remake needs is to polish the camera a bit more, increase up and down sensitivity and make it so it doesn't move by itself when close to the walls, like in narrow corridors. Oh, and also, that glitch that causes assets near the corners of the screen to flicker due to SR1 being made for 4:3 aspect ratio. Great video, thanks a lot!

The Kain / Soul Reaver series was the first games where I went in deep on learning everything I could on the lore, cut content, and just every facet of Nosgoth I could get my hands on. This included printed binders of FAQs, magazines, websites (Dark Chronicle and Lost Worlds), amd so may forums. The writing of these two games, plus Defiance, has stuck with me for years. Fun fact, SR2 was still in production when Blood Omen 2 was released and it's massively goofs in the lore - having been a different property altogether prior to becoming a Kain game (Chakan the Forever Man is what it was intended to be based on) derailed Amy Hennig's original ending of SR2. So if/when you get there and you hear "Hylden" - you're gonna need to play BO2 in order to understand how WTF that moment truly is. Anyhow, I'm glad these games were remastered and can be enjoyed by today's audiences. Hopefully we get a remaster of Defiance next or at some point as it's my fav of the series.

The original Soul Reaver is a special game for me. I had all but abandoned gaming and on impulse grabbed a Dreamcast on the cheap (they had just announced it was being discontinued) and a couple of games to see if anything would reignite my passion. One of those games was the port of Soul Reaver -- and I was hooked. The quality of the narrative coupled with the outstanding voice work was just what I needed. And the gameplay was like a dark and twisted Legend of Zelda. Still a high-water mark in a lot of respects. It's holds up marvelously.
