Cristián Paris honestly it was quite the opposite in many ways. Soul Reaver was going to be a new IP completely unrelated to Legacy of Kain. It wasn’t until later in the development cycle that it was decided it would be a spin-off. And even then, it was supposed to end with Raziel killing off all the vampires in Nosgoth but they ran out of time and went over budget so they had to leave it on a cliff hanger. It was so popular and so beloved by gamers tho that the LoK series kept trucking on. It’s a testament to the writers and devs skills that they managed to turn it into not only something cohesive but into one of the most beloved franchises out there. I’d love to see another entry in this series more than anything else.

Well, Blood Omen 2 was a disaster in terms of lore/story telling. Plot holes for days. Defiance did somewhat of a good job patching it up but still some glaring issues.

Everyone thinks about how powerful kain is but can you for a moment consider how terrifying an opponent raziel is? Time doesnt pass in normal fashion in the spectral realm, so from kain's perspective he hits raziel with a searing bolt of lightning powerful enough to kill any mortal or severely damage any vampire and raziel fades from view... only to reappear *instantly* at full strength and keep attacking. Raziel is (possibly besides the elder god) the only TRULY immortal creature in the legacy of kain series. He cannot be slain by any known means, besides in the last game where he voluntarily disperses his future self. Badass.

The Reaver was forged initially to be a vampiric blade, draining lifeforce from the enemy. It was also designed to be a prison for a wraith, namely Raziel. The soul-devouring properties were conferred unto the Reaver when it absorbed him. Kain managed to stash the now Soul Reaver somewhere where Moebius would get it, and give it to King William, thus finishing the loop. The Spirit Reaver, the wraithblade that Raziel had, his own soul, transferred into Kain's body, healing his mind and soul.

This rant by Kain is interesting, given what Defiance and the other sequels to this reveal. It is the first indication that Kain isn't happy with his original choice. It is also the first indication that there's more to Kain than the arbitrary brute. By the end of "Defiance", Raziel has "felt the full gravity of choice", and he makes the self-sacrificing one... the world-saving one... the right one. Mind you, like Kain, he also waits until the last moment, when he has no other options.

The fact that Kain had to sacrifice himself (to fix things in BO1) was accurate, however it would have been a temporary fix. Moebius orchestrated the destruction of the vampire race (save for Kain), ensuring that if Kain made the sacrifice, it would mean vampires would be extinct forever. Because "humans are not fit to serve" as guardians of the pillars, the problem wouldn't be solved, merely postponed.

Well... I think its brilliant. doing things perfectly doesn't let you get to see the spectral realm of most places you visit unless its critical to a puzzle, and it actually gives you an accurate representation of Raziel's immortality: He's not too durable in an extended fight, but if he does lose, to the senses of his opponent Raziel just disintegrates and then instantly re-materializes at full health.

***SPOILER*** He didn't break it. It was broken by a paradox. The soul within the soul reaver is Raziel. That is his fate- to be absorbed into the sword and make it a soul stealing weapon. The sword couldn't destroy it's own soul b/c then it wouldn't exist, so it shattered. The wraith blade Raziel carries is a constant reminder to his ultimate fate. Kain said they were close to their destiny because he has had his future told to him. This is part of it.

I always thought it would have been great if Adventure Time had parodied this. At one point Finn was carrying a sword literally made of him from a varied timeline. I thought it would have been great if the Ice King tried to strike down Finn with that sword and it shattered. Then he momentarily dies, slipping into the low level dead world where the ghosts of animals, items, food, and furniture go. Just long enough to be bound with the essence of his sword. Then he can summon it like the wraith blade, complete with coiling energy around the arm. Then he might find out it can evolve if he feeds it the ghosts of other swords, in particular the ghosts of the previous swords he wielded. Then it's final form is the sword that always appeared across the title card. Also with Ariel's last line all I could think of was "Remember when women couldn't vote and "certain folk" weren't allowed on golf courses? Ariel remembers."

BO2 comes, story-wise, after this one - but timeline-wise, BO2 occurrs between the time period of BO1 and SR1. BO2 in general makes no sense story-wise, so it's best to just ignore it entirely.

but doesn't BO2 occur after defiance? as a direct result of what Kain and Raziel accomplished throughout SR 1 SR 2 and Defiance? From my understanding, the genius of the Hylden was that THEY were the masters "pulling the strings' to set in motion a series of events that would allow them to return to Nosgoth and slay their ancient enemy. The Elder God to this effect was just another puppet they used under the guise of having a common enemy, seeing vampires as an abomination as they were the only creatures that could live as long as him/ disrupt his wheel of death and rebirth Ultimately by the time BO2 comes around though, the Hylden have Janos fueling their machine, Elder gods dead (which is why he doesn't appear) Raziel is in old Kain's reaver and he doesn't interfere in the events of blood omen 2, possibly because he realised this alternate younger version of himself had what it took to defeat the Hylden all by himself. So Kain post defiance doesnt show in BO2 cause he has essentially retired/lived happily ever after. Which makes sense because I mean, his entire legacy is pretty much him trying to undo his mistakes. So essentially. BO2 could almost be seen as the last game in the series - and a pretty good send off at that.

I will start from least important to most important and its told like this: The humans. We're just chilling and trying to survive. Unfortunately humans get a back seat on almost all of the big events, save one: Humans became guardians of the Pillars, things get a bit messy for humans after that... The Hylden. You can argue that they were an afterthought to add a bit of surprise and polish to a dying series, but I'd like to think they simply weren't introduced well. All we know is that they were depicted as the villains of a holy war that was fought long in the past, they lost and were banished to another dimension, which twisted their forms and fueled their rage. Honestly they may have even been human, who knows? But they're simply aching to get back into Nosgoth after millennia away by any means... The Vampires. Originally an altruistic and peaceful race by all accounts these winged humanoids had only one flaw... their religious doctrine. After a savage war against the Hylden they found themselves cursed with vampirism and the great holy banner they had amassed under suddenly fell silent, eventually leading to their ostracization by most, if not all others in Nosgoth. They were either killed or died by their own hand until only a bare handful remained and they've always wondered why their God abandoned them... The Elder God. The Vampires worshipped an entity that can only be described as a mystery wrapped up in a loose enigma, so vague are these beginnings. This being was tied to both the physical and spirit world and could act within both as it pleased. The Elder God absolutely abhors the notion of an immortal vessel, save itself as for its sustenance it fed on the energy of a soul perishing and being 'reborn'. The BO cutscenes were prerendered, the SR1 cutscenes were scripted events. If you look at the actual FMV from SR1 (the intro and the time portals near the end), it's far better.

Never claimed to be. You've got to understand that in the process of making these videos, I had to play through each section of each of these games a number of times, due to graphical problems with Fraps, video capture errors, general gameplay faults, or whatever. The SR1 videos alone took about 15 hours of playing to get. A 'normal' playthrough of the game takes about 4 hours tops. So by the time I got a video I was ready to post, I really didn't care how crappy the gameplay was.

I would save myself so I could see if there was a 3rd option like Kain was trying to do all along. How about you? What would you do?

I've always thought that the assumption that Kain had to sacrifice himself was a construct of Squidy/Moebius as a way to eliminate the vampires. Also, I think in some of the prophecies, Kain and Raziel are interchangeable. As I said in a different area, "Redeemer and Destroyer" could refer to both of them.

I noticed that in PC version music don't changes dynamically (the track have to meet it's end before next could be played). And there is no spectral versions of soundtracks. Why? I also played PS 1 version and I know that when Raziel encountered Kain first time the music changed to Raziel's Theme :P So sad, cuz music is genius in SR and really fits to the events...

The Soul Reaver is the harvester of souls for Elder God. To become the Reaver, Raziel had to be devoured by the Lake of Souls and left for dead. The Blood Reaver and the Wraith blade devour Raziel, unwillfully, as two different entities. See the similarity? In the act of devouring, his soul becomes the blade, similar to how he was transformed from Vampire to Reaver initially. To be free, the soul reaver title, and thus the Elder God and the Wheel of Fate must be destroyed.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but I had a lot of software related issues getting this to record, and had to play through the game in its entirety (with a lot of repeats of sections to fix fuckups) 4 times to get viable recordings; optional content was not the priority. ;)

Without question my favourite game on PS1. I find this fight so frustrating though because Kain hits you, sends you to the spectral realm and you have to go to the other side of the room to get back to the material realm only for Kain to send you straight back.
