Bought the "Up the Creek" soundtrack for this song. Such a kick ass guitar opening.

Believe it or not, I've been going through old VHS tapes that have been sitting in a box for 20 years, and was very surprised when this song came up on one. I forgot how much I liked this song till I saw this. It must have come out somewhere around the "Next Position Please" album. I've never seen another live version of this song. Now if we could find a live version of "Spring Break," that would be something!

It is included in Next Position Please Japanese mini vinyl album as bonus track.

I love song and it got requests all of the time on my radio show. When I interviewed Cheap Trick, Rick stated that this song was the biggest mistake they ever made and that they would NEVER release it on a compilation or box set. Too bad, it was the number 1 requested Cheap Trick song on my show.

Mighty Wings is better that this song. Im not bashing up the creek, this live version sounds incredible, I just think Mighty Wings is a better song.
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesshort8385Nah, this is even worse than Mighty Wings (which I agree, completely blows). The 80’s were a really rough patch for us old CT fans who got into them in the 70’s. They redeemed themselves in the mid to late 90’s, but there was like an 18 year period where they *REALLY* got lost, and this song was about as low as it got. Rock bottom.

I worked in a video store back when this movie came out. In the evening when few customers were around I'd pop in the tape and FF to the end just to hear the song. The movie was nothing to write home about even for the 80's.

Disagree. Decent 80's teen comedy. Ticked a lot of boxes. Stars from Animal House and Porkys. Far superior to any PC comedy that Hollywood are doing now. Couldn't have had a better song to kick the film off.

Though I agree that the movie is basically your average low-brow 80’s no-brainer comedy, I’d say that the song is *FAR* worse than the movie. The members of Cheap Trick themselves agree with me on this.

I've seen all (or at least most of them ! ) I was at the one '84 (the night before their show at Magic Mountain), the one in '86 for "The Doctor" tour (last Los Angeles stop with Jon Brandt on Bass) and then the one at the end of '87 when Tom Petersson had just returned. "The Flame" went to No.1 in '87 and it was back to the arenas for Cheap Trick !
@dukeofkbs13 жыл бұрын
@soul1961 Yes...a live version of "Spring Break" would be very interesting (I'd pay a shiny nickel to hear and see that !!) And while we're on the subject, what about a live version of "Mighty Wings" from Top Gun?? Although CT's soundtrack songs were not always their best work, as a die hard fan, any song between proper album releases was always welcome !!!
@sputnut11 жыл бұрын
Pete Comita only filled in for the remainder of a tour, and sat in on the Heavy Metal soundtrack songs. He was replaced by Jon Brant (no d ) as you see here for the next 4 albums as well as this song, and Mighty Wings. He did a pretty good job although He was not Tom Petersson. Rumor has it Tom's sloppy drinking habits at a party also attended by Rick Nielsen broke the ice and led to his return to the band. I hear Jon is now a horse farmer and lovin' it!
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
Pete also played on 3 other songs that were recorded for the “Rock and Rule” soundtrack. Jack Douglas (who produced the first album) produced. The songs were recorded in 1981, but the film wasn’t released until ‘83, and the soundtrack (which also included songs from Blondie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and Earth,Wind, & Fire) was never released due to licensing issues. Those three songs - “Ohm Sweet Ohm”, “I’m The Man”, and “Born To Raise Hell” remained unreleased until the “Sex, America, Cheap Trick” box set came out in 1996. Born To Raise Hell is a truly great song. Maybe the heaviest thing CT has ever recorded.

the band hates this song. I don't get, these are some good witty/sarcastic lyrics, the production was good, unlike Standing On The Edge, which were a mess and Lap of Luxury, which was them hemmed in by their label. This is a power pop masterpiece

I have posted the 3 remaining songs from this TV show from the Rock Palace from 1984. When I first started seeing the comments about this being Pete Comita I went back to find the other songs from this show. I can see why people think it is Pete. In "Up the Creek" it does look like Pete Comita because there are not any good close-ups on his face and Jon has shaggier hair than what you see on their album covers. When you see the other videos it is definitely Jon Brant. This is probably nothing, but I know JB was in the band in 1984 for sure. In this video, that really does look like Pete Comita playing. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Ha, "tricks". Yea. Anyway, I've read that JB has filled in for TP a couple of times (after TP rejoined) due to illness or something. Is it possible Comita did the same for Brant here? Anyone else think that looks like Comita? Well, we all know Tom is the best! I did know Jon Brant for a short time and he is a talented musician and a swell guy. Never heard too much nice stuff about Pete though..

+chamberstring I see what you mean. You may be on to something. Jon Brant had shorter, more styled, feathered hair. This looks more like Pete Comita's long shaggy mop.

+Ted Whitten 3:08- 3:12 definitely reveals it to be Jon Brant. You clearly do not know your Cheap Trick so well. Btw, hair does grow and people can change hair styles.
