Six years ago, Robin Zander issued an ultimatum: Either he( Bun.E) goes or I go. Bun E. refused to surrender his shares in Cheap Trick's corporation and claimed that he was illegally fired. Bun E. & Cheap Trick sued each other. Bun E. won his case. He gets to keep his shares, but Rick Neilson's son Daxx is the new Cheap trick drummer. Aside from a brief reunion for the Rock n'Roll hall of fame, Bun E's involvement with Cheap Trick has ended.

Back in 81 or 82, which would have been my first half of my junior year in high school, I was living in Amman,, Jordan for six months. My father had a new co-worker ( when we lived in Austria in the early 70s another co-worker was Cat Steven's brother in law, and since they had no kids, they were over at the house often, they got my parents to a Cat Steven's concert, and soon we had all his records to my chegrin) and he and his wife came over for dinner. They were from Rockford, Illinoise, and we're actually two of the twelve people at Brad's/ Bun E Carlos' wedding. Years later I met an old friend in Chicago before seeing a couple of YES- shows, where I had to drive by the Rockford exit.

They were the first band I saw live. I was 14 when I saw them open for KISS at the Forum. It was 1977, and they hadn't hit the big time with their "Budokan" album yet. 20 years later I talked to the band and what they said about that concert was surprising. They told me that Peter Criss was so wasted that Gene Simmons told them that Bun might have to put makeup on and sit in for Peter. They also said that the sound from the show was unusable. The show's purpose was to record "KISS Alive II", but the sound was bad, so the live album was recorded in a NJ studio.

One of the great drummers of rock. I like at the end he mentions wanting to meet some guy from a band called Liquor Giants with the name Dotson....well I had a suspicion so I looked it up and lo and behold, my suspicion was correct....he's speaking of Ward Dotson, who played with Gun Club for a period of time and is a really great guitarist. I'm gonna see if the Liquor Giants are any good cause Dotson is a great player. Gun Club were an amazing band if you've never heard or even heard of them....a great cross section of blues, country, punk/cowpunk. I highly recommend their first 4 records....Fire Of Love, Miami, Death Party (live ep) and The Las Vegas Story. I'm less familiar with the albums after Las Vegas Story, but I'm sure there's some good stuff on them. Their singer, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, was an enigmatic character who died in, I believe, around '96. Definitely, by my measure, one of the great 80's underground bands. Kid Congo Powers played guitar with them off and on, before and after he played in The Cramps.

Cheap Trick is nothing without Bun E. No idea what happened there and what the dispute is about, but no one else plays drums as dynamic and explosive as he does. Just the first bars of "Surrender" at live gigs are brilliant. With the new drummer it sounds like nothing.

I met Cheap Trick in Austin, TX, in 4/15. They were all great guys, including Rick's son, playing drums. It's unfortunate, but it's unlikely Bun will ever be with the band again, from all I've read. The thing that bums me, is due to contractual stipulation, Cheap Trick is not allowed to play their two songs from the Heavy Metal Sound Track, which are great, but which they do not have the rights to. (If you're younger, and want to hear a fantastic sound track, one of the best ever, the Heavy Metal sound track (Based on the Animated film, based on the magazine) is awesome. A surprisingly good mix from those years. Truly.

I've waited for years and this has never come up. I guess I may be the only person to have noticed this resemblance. The first time I saw Cheap Trick (it was at the moment I saw and immediately bought their first LP) I suspected that, since Rick Nielsen and Bun E were more or less the comic book characters vs the stereotypical "Rock Star" look of the other two on the cover, that Bun E had based his look on a classic comic character from the cult niche named Herbie Popnecker (first appearance in Forbidden Worlds #73 published by American Comics Group). I would be curious to know if he is even aware of Herbie. Replace the ever present cigarette drooping from the corner of his mouth with a lollipop and shorten the tie drastically and you have the Bun E "Look." Herbie's constant deadpan is also a perfect fit. (Herbie was also an oddball super hero of sorts...) Maybe, being a comic nerd born in the '50s, I am the only one to have ever noticed this synchronism. Do an image search.... If it wasn't intentional then it is one heck of a coincidence!
@goodmaro2 ай бұрын
I never thought of that resemblance until you brought it up, but...yeah! I can't quite picture the drummer floating and bouncing around like Herbie, but then who *could* fit that aspect? Rick Neilsen's Huntz Hall imitation was obvious, though.

Las Vegas wanted Cheap trick for a multi-month contract and he got in a huge fight with Robin because Robin wanted to stay home and take his kid to school (Robins 1st marriage failed because he was gone from the wife and kids too much). Apparently the fight escalated to the point Robin told Rick "its him or me". Lawsuits followed. They have settled the legal actions, and I did see Robin and Bun E. Shook hands at the Hall Of Fame. Hopefully they will get past it, because his drums simply are 1000X better than Dax Nielson's.
@johnclough25618 жыл бұрын
I was wondering what had happened between Bun and the band. I find it hard to believe that they would kick him out of the band over a disagreement between him and robin. As far as bun being a 1000 times better on drums than DAX? I think that is a stretch. I just seen them this past Sunday at the xfinity center in mansfield ma. and Dax sounded good to me.I think what we all really miss is Bun's original look with the butt hanging out of his mouth, it's like a cheap trick logo
