Blue Note + Mizell brothers + Donald or Bobbi. Sumptuously gorgeous music. Been listening to it since the mid-70s. New York Times (BH) and Think Twice (DB) I love in particular. Thank you

@davidstocker5736 it's all beautiful stuff... It's amazing that the Mizells managed to fit so much great work in that time. So many great productions they were involved in, and I keep discovering more. Cheers!

All killer soul groove or jazz groove, Marlena Shaw’s cover of “California Soul” is excellent. Would be great if we could do another livestream. This is my favorite genre, Keep Diggin’ ✌

@johnmoreno96 yes, she's a real favourite of mine!

Thanks again for the many under-the-radar soul/funk tips you've provided on your channel. You've helped me find some wonderful stuff. But, you know, jazz is not hard, really. To paraphrase Publisher's Clearing House in the States: You May Already Be A Jazzoid! If you like the instrumental funk of the JBs (Fred Wesley, Maceo, Bootsy), Booker T. & the MG's, the Meters, late-Columbia Miles Davis (from "Bitches' Brew" to "On the Corner" and "Get Up With It"), Blackbyrds-era Donald Byrd, "Heavy Weather" period Weather Report, the Budos Band and Sons of Kemet, you're already "jazz adjacent" to say the very least. Gene Harris is an inherently funky keyboard player and always has been, going back to his days with the Three Sounds in the '50s...

@bacarandii I think it's best just to follow your ears... i have lots of stuff that is jazz. I think there is a lot of jazz hierarchy as to what is considered the best or most important (which are terms I don't really like to use when describing music) and that can be a bit of a turn off. Cheers!
@bacarandii29 күн бұрын
@@melomano4145 Yes, constructing musical hierarchies is silly. What you like is what you like, no excuses necessary, and people shouldn't be intimidated by somebody else's definition of what "jazz" is (or can be). Duke Ellington's highest compliment for any music was to recognize it as "beyond category," regardless of genre. He said (in the 1940s, I believe): "I think the music situation today has reached the point where it isn't necessary for categories. I think what people hear in music is either agreeable to the ear or not. And if this is so, if music is agreeable to my ear, why does it have to have a category? It either sounds good or it doesn’t."

I totally agree- Fancy Dancer is a superb album. Bought the reissue a couple of years ago and it gets played a lot!
@melomano41456 ай бұрын
@@andyshacks7812 it's a great one... I held off the reissue and found this a while back for the same price... a classic record all the same. Cheers!

@@melomano4145 Yeah think I’ll look out for an original. Sometimes they mess about with the sound too much for my liking on reissues, though having said that, my reissue copy sounds pretty good! 👍
@melomano41456 ай бұрын
@andyshacks7812 I've replaced reissues with originals a few times, and usually you can feel a difference, but more than anything, it's the romance of an original copy that gives it an extra hit. I've heard that bluenote reissues are pretty good on the whole, so there might not be a big difference in sound.

Wow, I've never heard of those first four you showed. I'll have to look into those. Bobbi Humphrey is one of my all time favorites! I love the flute as well!

@AsTheTableTurns if you don't know Marlena Shaw, you've got some great music to discover. Check outbher Spice of Life album for a real classic. I'm a big fan of Bobbi Humphrey as well and need to explore more. It's always so exquisitely produced with a great sound. Cheers!

I have and love Blacks and Blues, Street Lady and other Byrds, but not Satin Doll or Fancy Dancer. Always interested in anything Mizell related and I’m sure it’s worth checking out the others. I like what I’ve heard from Marlena Shaw so far. Her Montreux recordings are pretty impressive. The Gene Harris sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing.

@jackblondie9424 there's some great stuff in there. I'd love to have a black and blues. The time might come. Do check out marlena shaw, she has a very rich body of work worth investigating. Cheers!

Nice to see another Marlena Shaw fan out there. She is so underrated. Who is this bitch, Anyway? Might be her best on Blue Note but they all have gems on them. I have all her records. My fav would be Spice of Life on Cadet. My fav Bobbi record on Blue Note is Blacks and Blues. But fancy Dancer is also a masterpiece.

@magnuslarsson9161 Yes, Marlena Shaw is a true great. I'd really love to have those LPs you mentioned. There's always good stuff to be found on them. I'd really like to get an original blacks and blues, but might have to settle for the reissue. Cheers!

Jazz is a very broad spectrum, lots of 'types' with minimal common ground. Jazz is probably my favourite genre, next to Disco, but 99% plus of Jazz Lp's are garbage. Your wall supports this, the mindnumbing banal Guns N Roses and at times strong Bowie pop tunes! If you can tolerate or admire Humphrey's Fluffy Dancer Lp I'd have though a lot of Smooth Jazz might appeal to you?
@melomano41456 ай бұрын
@miketomlin6040 Haha, classic Tomlin put down! I'm not reaching for the Kenny G just yet, though my taste for quiet storm slow jams is sending me into dangerous territory. As for Guns n Roses and Bowie, they are there for the sake of domestic harmony. The missus is big into metal and classic rock, so as there is balance on the soundsystem, there is balance on the wall. Cheers!

@@melomano4145 Put Down? I was simply pointing out the sensibility that might find Humphrey's effort of value may well find similar sounds in another genre to be so, albeit not that far removed from hers. I remember you saying before er indoors had a penchant for cockrock! That's an interesting psychodynamic, perhaps she should do a video explaining the appeal of it to her? A person I see often identifies as a 7th wave feminist or somesuch, in her vinyls I found a Black Sabbath Lp, I pointed out this was likely problematic vis a vis her overt value system.
