the writing of this song details the struggles of people in maintaining their faith. Kendrick tells a story, he starts by talking about his first encounters with God, he then develops a deep connection to his faith. He is struggling in his life and he sees religion as an avenue to heal, he even goes as far as "giving strangers testimonies" but as soon as he gained his faith, it was lost as he heard the news that one of his close friends had died. Kendrick tells us that his relationship with faith changed a lot thought his life, he found it hard to believe in anything when such terrible things are happening to him and the people around him. Towards the end of the song he is telling us about his current attitude toward faith, that he would "rather not live like there isn't a God Than die and find out there really is". Kendrick in this song walks through his life and his experience with faith, ultimately leading us to his current life where he is very aware of gods presence but is still trying to truly connect to god "And wonder why I ain't ever caught that feeling before, Maybe they know Him better, or I don't know no better" but he doesn’t let this deter him from his belief "But what I do know, is that He's real and He lives forever". Faith is not only the title of this song, but it is key to Kendrick as a person, he chose to release this song to help others with their struggles in the hope that they might find a glimpse of light in a sea of terror. This mindset can be seen in a tweet he posted in 2012 "Aye. To that person that's been feeling suicidal out there. I wrote a song called "FAITH". Go listen and reply back ASAP." Just as Kendrick rejected faith in his youth and was able to develop his beliefs throughout his life, he hopes that others will see that God will always be there, through all the struggles of life, though loss, violence, pain, and greed he never leaves.

That feeling you have of love for someone or love for a hobby you have. It's something that warms up your soul and brings happiness in your life. Really study the song Faith by Kendrick Lamar because it can put it in many perspectives. I wouldn't tell you to choose a particular religion simply because there are ideas from all religions that you can place into your world. I feel like whichever higher being any person chooses to believe in only wants one thing. It's not to worship it but, to worship life and to feel love. Its what's missing in this world. At the end he mentiones why he believes a god exists.. and it's just Palcal's Wager.. Kind of lame =\ It's an old argument. You ask what if I'm wrong, but.. what if you're wrong? You act as if there's only two options, your god or no god.. what if it's a different god or one we have never heard of before and you end up in that god's version of hell? you realise there have been thousands of religions through out time.. and that just in christianity alone there are over 41 thousand denominations or variants.. your odds are terrible. Assuming one of the religions was actually right of course.. which most likely isn't the case, you have started with an assumption based on no evidence and little reason to assume it's true. And if you're suggesting I should just believe in that one particular god for insurance to keep in my back pocket.. I think a god would be able to see what's up lol, kind of insulting to your god.. especially that particular god since he's depicted to know everything and be all good and all kinds of other contradicting stuff. If you argue "what do I have to lose by being a christian", for me, a lot.. depending on how I would interpret the bible or how strict I am of course. We can always half ass things and make it easy lol. Also pragmatism and faith don't go together like that. People don't just choose some random thing to follow and then they actually believe it is true deep inside, they need to actually believe it. Siberius Wolf that's a great question. I would say there's a huge difference between say a direct quote from God/Jesus and an Old Testament story. Obviously with the Bible it's not all just God saying "This is good. This is bad." The Bible is full of wisdom, history, etc. A relationship with God is what Jesus points toward in the New Testament...obviously we no longer sacrifice animals to cover our sin as the people did in the OT. A theory states that every word is validated as applicable truth but I struggle with that myself because I'm no scholar ;) that's where my faith comes in... to address the second part of your comment: my comment was aimed towards the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of your original comment. I (personally) believe that my "salvation" is solely...pun intended ;)...attained by faith in God and His Son Jesus who died to save the world from hell, which the Bible sates. I'm not concerned with added doctrine men have offered long the way including different "variations" of "religion"...I have faith in the Word of God and what it says and spend less time speculating about this and that...this does not mean I chose not to attend a church and the man upstairs and I just have an understanding, though I don't think that lifestyle is inappropriate, I know some religious people see that as taboo. I attend church for the purpose of fellowship with other believers to encouraged and be encouraged, not because it makes me a good person who earns salvation. What I don't get is when atheists, agnostics, and people who have generally lost their faith show up on videos like this to express that they're atheists and what not. If you are one, than that's fine. We wish you the best, and sincerely hope whatever decisions you make in life lead you to happiness. But don't show up here just to stir up trouble. This is the kinda music Christians like to play to help get their minds right during times of inner struggles and having their faith tested. Knowing that, why are you showing up to talk about your theories on how you think God is made up? How about Christians start going around on atheist aimed videos and talking about our theories of how we think atheists are people who say they don't believe in God, only because they low-key want to be God and decide for themselves what morals and ideology that the world should adhere to (because atheists, for all their claims of individualism, seem to like going around preaching their ideology and lifestyle to other people. As much as other religions do, oddly enough.)? That would stir up some serious problems wouldn't it? So don't bring that to our circles, and we won't bring it to yours.

AJweathersby First of all, yes there are Atheists seeking out religious videos or songs or films or whatever to express their opinion. That has often to do simply with being fascinated by religion or because they have issues with self-worth and like to bash on people they believe are inferior to them (yes they exist, and I'm an atheist myself). There are also Christians doing the same thing on Atheists videos, even videos that have an Atheist speaking but nothing to do with atheism. This is because thats how some people are, I mean just look at the comments of Daniel Micheletti. She calls all atheist angry idiots, says atheists are pissed of at the evidence of God without presenting any and assumes that everyone who criticizes religion in this video is basement-dwelling teenager without friends. And concerning ideology, Atheism is not an ideology because it is nothing more than a disbelief in God, and has no overarching features outside of that (like a set of normative values). In fact, not all Atheists are even on the same page as many atheists just say that they don't know. You could say that Anti-theism is an ideology because it comes with a set of values and beliefs that tend to see religion as a negative thing, but not Atheism. It can be part of an ideology, but it can't be an ideology all by itself. Now why am I on this video? Because I like Kendrick Lamars Rap, I had no agenda coming here, it was just another Song that I checked out. And I'll give you my honest opinion on it, it is not his best. I loved his new album and I think it's a masterpiece, but the message in this one seems odd to me, especially when one looks at "To Pimp a Butterfly". Here he his message is to "just have faith" and his last line in particular isn't very smart but rather fear-mongering (Hell), which saddens me because he seems to be a smart man (What if the god he meets after death isn't the one he expected?) . In TPAB his messages when spiritual aren't only ment for Christians but for everyone. For instance, I really like his Song "How much a Dollar cost" and that has spirituality in it, but one can relate to it still because the message is "be humble". Now I appreciate him speaking truth about social injustice in this song, and I understand how this is can be a very emotional Song for Christians. But I feel kinda left out because I can't relate to the message which is just "have faith". Phew... that was a long one^^

In most of his songs you can see the struggle Kendrick has with God. This is what makes him real. We all, at a certain point, have a struggle with God. His emotions and lyrics he puts into his music is evidence than he is human just like us, unlike other rappers today that right about how they got it good.
