Don't get me wrong to me it's absolutely no where near the mastery that ds1 is but for some reason I just have a soft spot for ds2. After bloodborne I'm finally gonna get ds3. I always held the theory that in the first Dark Souls, even if you walked away, someone else would Kindle the flame. Like in DS3, there are others powerful enough to link the flame. So even if you walk away in both DS and DS2, some other powerful chump takes it. Each protagonist is just another incarnation of the last, desperately trying to break this cycle. That’s just what I like to think. Some super pissed off and incredibly stubborn protagonist that’s trying to end the cycle.

While I do like this idea. I've always held the idea that the first flame was dwindling quickly. When you fight Gwyn I feel that there are only minutes left of the flame before the age of dark would be ushered in. This makes it impossible to extend the flame as you cannot bolster what has already died.
@Prizzadar5 жыл бұрын
@@doctorflibble7484 i didnt get this feeling from it, but even if it was the case, the game uses those words like convoluted time and space so maybe all that is needed is link the fire in any of those other alternate universes. When somebody ring The Bell (DS1) you could hear it even though it was some other "hero" from another time and space. But then why would this work for linking of the fire and not the other ending (age of dark)? Maybe it is because all of this was prepared by gods to ensure that the age of fire will continue. This state of world similar to multiverse could be created by them(gods) as well. Or it could be just the side effects of fading flame or something and i am all wrong :D
@doctorflibble74845 жыл бұрын
@@Prizzadar The way I've always seen the bell ringing is that when the fire fades possibility becomes reality. So anything that could happen would happen but only one possibility ends with an undead reaching the kiln no matter the choice of age, this age will cause the timeline to stabilize. like how the untended graves exist because champion gundyr didn't wake in time. I am of the believe that that darkness is always there as a possibility, it's up to the chosen undead to decide which timeline he stays in: The one where he dies in the fire linking or The one where he finally frees humanity of the reign of the gods and allows them to return to their natural state.
@Prizzadar5 жыл бұрын
@@doctorflibble7484 That is actually a very good answer and it makes sense :) Although i was talking about 2 bells in dark souls 1 which you need to ring (to prove your worth?) so you will get access to fortress/anor londo. The bell in Dark souls 3 you are talking about (as i understand it) has another purpose as you described. At least that is how i understand it.
@dpauls152435 жыл бұрын
In terms of there never being an Age of Dark since Gwyn, the way I understood it was that both endings of previous games could be cannon, since neither choice really matters. If you link the flame you restart the AoF, which will gradually fade the same as before, or you let it die and start an AoD, which lasts until the embers of the Flame are rekindled, either on their own or when someone sacrifices themselves to it. And then the cycle repeats over and over. Neither ending resolves anything, since both will eventually lead back to the same place.

The fire would still be lit because even if you refused another hero would be rising up to light the flame in your stead. The second and third game shows us just how much the entire linking of the flame issue as set forth by Gwyn as his last desperate act is a vastly repeated cycle and he put in place many tools to help ensure that it keeps happening and it's the very people the linking of the flame holds in check are the ones to feed the cycle endlessly and keep it going. Even the very nature of the Unkindled as they are described being all those who failed in some way to link the flame being amalgamated and brought back because the proper servants of the cycle are failing in their duties shows there are vastly more ready to link the fire even if you as the PC don't manage to do it or refuse to do it in any of the games. making both endings completely possible as canon in DS1.

I think you've really mischaracterized the Dark Soul, and what a Dark Age would be. In the Dark Souls universe, there are two sets of diametrics that govern existence: Life and Death, Dark and Light, each manifested in its own Lord Soul. The push and pull of Life and Death govern how beings perdure over time; the push and pull of Light and Dark govern the "domain" that existence takes place in. So we see that Life and Death dance temporally, and Light and Dark dance physically. With that in mind, an Age of Dark would not be an age of void, death, and non-substance. It would simply be the reciprocal of Light. What would that be, exactly? We can't really imagine, because we've only known the Age of Light, but there is no reason to assume it wouldn't be a fertile or nurturing place for life. "What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow Out of this stony rubbish? Son of Man, You cannot say, or guess For you know only a heap of broken images, Where the Sun beats"
@brandonmiller91554 жыл бұрын
And it’s explained that the undead curse is a distinctly human trait (strange that gwyn and the nameless king can hollow but whatever). Just as life and death can’t exist in a vacuum, light cannot exist without dark, and as all of humanity has part of the dark soul within them, this is why they’re undying. As long as the fire is linked and the age of fire and light continues, the souls of dark have to exist.

This is specifically why me (and many others) despite adoring what both "Ashes of Ariandel" & "The Ringed City" revealed to us in terms of lore, would have really loved to have one of the DLCs be set in Londor given how crucial it is for the entire mythology. It's one thing not having a chance to visit Astora since, apart for some characters' personal story, it is not that crucial when it comes to it's mysteries (except for a couple things, like the "beast" cited in the "Ring of the evil eye" since DS1, which i was always curious about) but Londor's whole culture seems to be just as important of a place as Anor-Petite Londo or The Ringed City.. Infact, before the titles of the DLCs were announced, i remember many people, me included, giving for granted that Londor would have been either present or, at least, heavily talked about in the added content...a bit of a shame.
@logical-tea15655 жыл бұрын
There is a general theme I noticed about the Pilgrims and that is the ones that aren’t dead (Yoel/the pilgrim from the 2nd DLC) don’t really have a purpose. Now to establish my point I must remind you that a Hollow loses will loses his/her mind when they completely loses purpose or give up, and they’ll be able to keep their mind when they have a purpose to work on. So maybe Pilgrims are the same but in a slightly altered way by in the fact that when one of them is without a goal or purpose then he/she will remain “Hallow” unable to die. In contrast, when a Pilgrim has a goal as with the majority of them acting on their pilgrimage they will not become a “Hallow” and therefore will become kinda like in form of “Human” as if their curse was broken and they are able to die (mostly due to exhaustion in the case of Pilgrims). With that in mind I want to take some examples with some known Pilgrims: Yoel: With Yoel we could theorize that he didn’t really held faith in his pilgrimage unlike the others (speculation), but when he saw us (to him the champion of ash) he really wanted to serve us and get a goal to be able to die. Notice his words “Undo my shackles.”, and he finally got his purpose he was able to get his long awaited death and undo the shackles of the gods. Pilgrim assassin in Irythel: Notice that the assassin pilgrim (the one that delivers Anri to us) only dies after you preformed the ritual and fulfilled her goal. The old hag Pilgrim (2nd DLC): When we first meet her we notice that she is completely out of purpose on life just from her tone and due to that she managed to live to the end of times, and then we notice from her dialogue that she wants to see an angel before she dies, and we found her dead what was the most likely thing she saw... an angel. Even though it all connects up in my head there are certain problems with this theory and that is why all of these characters don’t respawn when they are killed before they have made their goals, since they still undead without purpose and should keep respawning (maybe a mechanic thing with the game).

"the flame has been linked since lord Gwyn", that's not what the description says, it says MANY lords have linked the flame, but not all of the them. King Vendrick was actually a dark lord.

Rafael vendrick was not a dark lord, him and Aldia were both trying to find a cure for the curse and to break the cycle, Vendrick just went hollow.

I have a theory regarding Aldritch's vision of the deep sea. Perhaps, since time is convoluted in Dark Souls, Heide WAS in fact Anor Londo. If time is convoluted then maybe we are seeing Anor Londo before being called Heide, and the sea that swallowed Heide is what Aldritch was seeing? In conclusion: We are fighting Aldritch before Anor Londo is swallowed by the ocean and is called Heide. Just a little tinfoil for you all

Honestly, Fungo, as much I love Vaati, you are much better at this than he is. He thought Solaire was Gwyn's sons, which turned out to be wrong, whereas you straight up were right about it, lol. I think it is because you are more apt to go off of existing evidence with less personal interpretations. Great job, keep it up, man.
@ParadoxialRepetition8 жыл бұрын
Lasse Müller True. That's very true. I'll grant that. But, we also cannot dismiss that he nevertheless made a mistake about that. Don't misunderstand, I like Vaati, I think his videos are great and I always look forward to them, I just think Fungo has a slightly better grasp on the story and he goes more in depth.

I like's Fungo's insert of humor in his works. I like Vaatis too, I've learnt so much from his vids, but at times it feels like his force feeding me with his theories, and it sometimes go in a serious attitude, I guess to go with Souls atmosphere?....but with Fungo's humor I can breathe and crack a smile... ( I especially enjoy what he did with |Alfred in BB ) all in all Vaati, Fungo, & Dave Control, are the best at making these souls lore that I personally look forward to.

@kaisersoymilk69126 жыл бұрын
@@CreepercrapTV There's always been zero chances that Solaire was Gwin's son: Solaire isn't a nobleman, it's very clear from his physical aspect, his goofy armour and demeanour. Japanese see noble people as "pure" and refined (usually tall and thin, and with delicate features). Solaire looks more like a uncouth peasant comic relief than a noble.

The age of The Deep Sea... Lovecraft... Cthulhu?... Wowzers Aldritch was a Bloodborne fan no questions. Fun theory: his age is Bloodborne. New cycles, new themes, you could even argue that it's the Age of Humanity when Bloodborne takes place, and now that the world doesn't revolve around the flame, it revolves around the new-found powers of the moon. Food for thought? Loved the vid btw.

You know that the Age of Ancients was never depicted as bad, right? It was quiet and peaceful and not really a bad place to hang out before the first flame upset the equilibrium of all things. That's pretty much the way most of the polytheistic descendants of PIE religion go. Then the lords got all cheesed off and whooped on the dragons because...uh...reasons? Every side story that we get in every game points toward the futility of linking the fire and an outright hostility toward the great lords. Hell - as far back as the first game you've got the firstborn son turning against Gwyn and Havel seemingly plotting against the gods as well. Finally, Gwyn refused to let the cycle continue in what Dark Souls 2 pretty clearly establishes as The First Sin and that's why three out of four endings here involve somehow ending the Age of Fire. Or, if we don't want to deal with this diegetically because that's stupid, the actual statement being made here is a metaphor for the franchise itself. You can keep prodding it on, gaining less and less from it every time you repeat the same old set of events, you can let the developers shut it down and move on to something else, you can pretend to do that and then balk at whatever it is that they actually do and cling to your wubby, or you can adopt the franchise yourself and make it your own, without the progenitors providing you any guidance. Trying to dice it up the way that you're doing here would appear to be missing the forest for the trees. Dan Olson has a good video about that, actually. This game pretty much puts its metaphor right there on the table and lets you see it if you'll just look.

wait if horace killed anri, and anri is an unkindled like the player. and the reason why the player respawns is because he is unkindled (and has the darksign?was it? i cant remember). then shouldn't anri respawn?

Excuse my self for my bad english ( I'm from italy), here goes my thoughts: (Ending 1 kindling the flame) The flame after many and many cycles is getting weaker and weaker, this can been seen in the kindling ending, where the flame slowly burns your character only producing a flebile light, quite the opposite of what we experienced in the first game with light and flames all over the place. Long story short this ending is just postponing the problem until a time when even kindling the flame will not be enough and the so called dark age will come. ("Secret ending" take the power of the flame for your self) By killing the fire keeper right after you summoned her, you can achieve this ending where you character steps on the keeper and use the power of the faiding flame for himself, this is also a reference to demon's souls and the slayer of demons who choose to "step" on the maiden in black, not to put to slumber the old one and keep the souls and the power he has acquired during his journey for himself. Long story short in this ending you choose to use the power of the flame for you selfish reasons until your inevitable death or hollowing, ( by the hand of the time or someone else) the cycle is not broken. (Ending 2 let the flame to die) By letting the flame die the dark age begins, but there are two elements that we have to underline, as said in the video once the fire's keeper duty is accomplished the poor girl dies, but in this ending we can clearly hear that even when the dark comes she is still alive, she even questions her future and that of the unkindled one, proving that in this state of events her duty is still not fully accomplished. The other thing I want to mention is the fact that as the keeper sais after the arrival of the dark, tiny little flames will start dancing again, meaning that as happend in the first game during the dragon's age, the flame will once again appeare out of nowhere, starting another age of fire and another cycle. (Dark->Light-> rekindling->Dark and so on) (or maybe simply Dark->light->Dark without the act of someone kindling the flame that will anyway fade for the darkness at a certain point) (Ending 3 The Lord of hollows) In this ending our character, who thanks to Yuria's machinations that speeded up the process of becoming a fully undead; "absorbs" the flame in his mark on his chest and uses the power he gained to start the age of mens. The real question is: by doing so he breaks the cycle? He starts a similar age of that of the dragons? Will the flame reappear on his own? Similarly to the "demon's souls ending" the unkindled is just postponing the cycle after his death? Thank you for your time, leave a comment after this post so we can discuss further more. P.s great video man!

Errico Martina to me, snuffing out the flame and allowing the age of darkness to begin is the happiest ending because you are allowing the world to return to shapelessness and eventually be reborn... possibly better? At least back at the beginning where the flame is stronger. Otherwise I like the usurpation ending because your character defies the cycle and takes it upon himself to start a new age. The age of man. But does that mean eternal suffering of mankind? Or at least until the fire fades or you are killed? It's definitely not a happy ending either way. Those are my two favorites though. Rekindling the flame just seems anti-climactic
