I hung out with him and Develop a bunch of times in the late 90's through a mutual friend when he and his crew were on top. Cool cats and always humble. Spik invited my friends and I to his home in NJ once and he showed us his set. Develop also invited all of us back to his home one night after a different battle and he showed us all the records his father produced for his brother and Develop's uncle salsa superstar Marc Anthony. Cool moment I still cherish.

DOORKITTYFILMS army totally turntable TV's, piklz, junkies, and allies ect...that was for sure the height of turntablism. I tried watching some recent dmcs and it looked like it was in someones garage. lol. it's a shame. I think once this new technology hit where u never have to change a record using your laptop it was over.

I 100 percent agree - i got all the turntable tv vhs stuff and a bunch on contests - computers killed it and fucked up the art of digging !! But real heads no the score - worst thing ever was the movie "scratch" - I knew it was over then ! (rip roc raida)

I remember going to this battle at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. I used a tape recorder to record the battle, because camera phones didn’t exist yet 😂 After the battle, I remember hanging out outside with all of the DJ’s. This set from Spiktakular was the one I’d go back and listen to the most.

@leebrandon38428 жыл бұрын
i just rewatched this battle and i wanna know how the hell this kid didn't win?? p-trix is unreal and a beast but this shit was differen't and creative and flawless. scratching with both hands...p-trix set was very basic, an intro/ beat juggle/ scratch routine/ beat juggle/ outro. ptrix is my boy too.
@teenagetruck5 жыл бұрын
I always thought if he wouldn't have gone first he'd have won. Not to take away from Ptrix but this set was too dope
@PickpocketJones3 жыл бұрын
I love this set too but it's obvious. P-trix was on time and clean, better scratching and original juggles that were more musical and better composed. 3 or 4 guys from the Allies were in the 99 competition and you saw some of the same juggle patterns repeated in all their sets. P-trix stood out in that battle because his stuff was different and didn't sound like everyone else.

@ftnrbhmwk You've never seen a White or Asian DJ do body tricks while juggling? Try Roli Rho and Doe Boy from the fifth platoon, First Rate (formerly of the Scratch Perverts), Can I mention Craze? etc etc. In 1989 it was DJ Aladdin who won the DMC (in the US) not DJ Scratch. Body tricks have always been considered a 'gimmick' for the most part, they detract from the musicality and technicality of a routine. Race has never mattered, if you think so - you are paranoid. Battling isn't about money.

@stillceaser14 жыл бұрын
@ftnrbhmwk Come on. P-Trix owned that competition. It has nothing to do with skin colour. If you perform a routine of the complexity level indicative in P-Trix's routine, it really isn't feasible to perform body tricks. Playing the race card is just silly
@ftnrbhmwk13 жыл бұрын
@funkateer17 have u seen aladdin, alcoholic, crackhead, n did a bid... Look at the reunion vid. As for Joe Cooley.. Everybody know the Philly kats were beating NYC n Cali dj's in the 80's Jazzy Jeff, Dj CASH MONEY; probably the 1st unofficial beat juggler.. They (PHILLY DJ'S) started putting the turntables vertical. N the media LIED; n said NWA started gangster rap...NOT!!! Philly's Schoolly d, who own his label, n had total control, n the early 80's. Then u had JUST- ICE NYC RAPPER

@stillceaser Craze in not white. He's from central America. Body tricks is never a gimmick; that came with battling in the 70's with Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore. Wow; u talking detraction "from the musicality and technicality of the routine"! That the problem with whites n asians, they want 2 claim shit, rewrite shit, n tell others what how it should b done.. 1st of all, ur not mixing on the dance floor, so it doesn't have to b clean, no body is going to dance to it.
@rockhills6 жыл бұрын
I think he lost based on how large that shirt was. 😂
@stillceaser14 жыл бұрын
@ftnrbhmwk You certainly have a skewed perspective, not to mention an inherently racist and bigoted one. I'll stick with the turntablism, because you are way out of your depth regarding history and geopolitics. So, would you accept that turntablism has evolved since the days of Flash, Jazzy Jay, DST and so on? Would you accept that it is a pursuit all races' and persuasion can undertake? Would you prefer some 'closed shop' where only black DJs performing body tricks can lay claim? Dialectic?
@stillceaser14 жыл бұрын
@ftnrbhmwk Oh dear. It sounds like you are oppressing yourself. You are too young to have any sense of 'back in the day' so you can't really comment on the 'geist' of that time - suffice to say you have it very wrong. Turntablism and it's history (indeed Hip Hop) is not a adumbration of racial tension, rather I would posit that it had brought race together. If you really want to make strong critique, I would say it has (like many other things) been subsumed by class and money, but not race.
@stillceaser14 жыл бұрын
@ftnrbhmwk You are making a bit of a straw man out of the whole affair. Just enjoy Spiktakulars set, and if you are dissatisfied with the status quo in America (as many, including myself are), then do something constructive and useful about it. Try not to embarrass yourself by making anachronistic analogies of imperial race struggles. It doesn't do the debate any justice, nor service.
@ftnrbhmwk14 жыл бұрын
@stillceaser NO I DON'T EXCEPT IT... U all ruined dj battles. Just like u ran break dancing in the whole. I might b a bigot, but not a Racist. I dont have the power 2 oppress ppl. Make laws n have certain ppl living on reservations.. Battling MAKES NO MONEY. i THOUGHT U HEARD ME!!! If u want to stay n ur basement 4 hours practicing, thats ur business. But party Dj's will make money, like Kid Capri, Dj kay slay for NBA ALL STAR GAME, ALBUM RELEASE PARTIES, AND NFL SUPER BOWL PARTIES. Geeeez!!!
