When Gwen linked the fires, he also linked humanity to the flame. My own personal theory is that undeath did not include becoming hollow originally. The idea is that if the fire finally goes out, the curse will be lifted. Of course, because this is just a theory, it could just as easily be the end of humanity, which is what most people in Dark Souls believe.

So, I have a sort of guess for the "world" of Dark souls, what if the "real world" was actually just a painting, and that this is the cycle, that has been going on forever, every time a world ends, a new one is painted, both with the dark soul, but fire always making its way in, or maybe they combine to make a dark flame, making something completely new, anyway, that's just what I like to believe, an infinite cycle of dark and fire.
