We continue to sound deaden the roof of our Chevy Silverado by adding my Dynamat and using spray foam to help tie the outside skin to the bracing of the cab.

I definitely agree with not foaming the side pillars. You brought up a good tactic of adding bolts to rattle spots around factory welds. Always appreciated your attention to detail.

Hmmm I already put my headliner back up but that would have been nice to touch up a few spots with foam up there. Now there is a really good spot for it on the back of the cab wall, so I may try it there. Great video thanks.

What is he size of the space between the headliner and metal roof? 1. What if sprayed foam in between before completely putting the headliner back up? 2. What about using some silicone to glue pieces of that 1/4 in foam workout mats between the two to fill the void?
@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 Жыл бұрын
I don't know the actual space. Problem with spraying spray foam everywhere it might expand out of control. As long as the work out mats are light and aren't highly flammable.

good stuff! next video can you lightly tap the outside top of your cab? I'm curious to see the sound difference and the stiffness of it. I remember mine was like copy paper..... LOL

Pay attention. There is high expansion foam and low expansion foam. If you use high expansion when you mean to use low expansion you're up for a surprise in an enclosed space.

1:00 rather than doing that for grounding purposes couldn't we just run a ground wire directly from battery to amp(s)? This is what I'm trying out and it's working really well with very minimal resistance using SHCA's oversized 2/0 OFC which is more like 3/0 to 4/0 AWG. Note: I also added and/or upgraded ground wires to chassis, frame, and body all within engine bay. Thx 4 vid. I ask bcuz now I'm questioning if I need to do more such as what you did but probably not considering I'm not relying on body/frame as my sound system's ground, right?
@AnthonyJ350

You can which is good for the sound system. I do the grounds like this to help the factory electronics as well.

Hey how are the results of this 3 years later? I found mice living in my roof (86 F150). I drill out all of the spot welds and peeled the roof down. I am hesitant to reweld it back up there without blocking all holes for mice. I am leery of spray foam bc I read one experience where it rusted. I also have clearance lights that I cannot protect. The rear cab light I can easily out that in conduit.

Mine has been fine. If those are your concerns I would just sound deaden the roof after you have done any welding. And of course paint over all your welds or any bare metal found.

Exactly what happened to my project truck. The Great Stuff big gap filler (black can), 100% not water resistant. I filled my roof with it and despite sounding like an oak door, it trapped water and completely rusted out the roof. I would look into using something meant for water Contact like their Pond and Rock version, though with testing beforehand

Pay close attention to the warning about the spray foam being flammable. Great stuff is EXTREMELY EXTREMELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FLAMMABLE. I had a small electrical short in the factory wiring of my van by the time all the foam caught and ignited the rest of the cars interior. There were 40' flames shooting out the top of my van. Until the gas tank blew. Then after the enormous fire ball. There were 50' flames coming from it. I do not suggest this at all. Only took 30 seconds for my van to go up. Definitely use at your own risque. Just saying. Hate to see anyone get hurt. Cool video though.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Ya that's why I sprayed it in areas that didn't have any wiring and all the wiring in the headliner was retaped and looked. To be fair cars are filled with flammable materials, look at the latest recall for the F150, a small spark from the airbag module can possible ignite the carpet on the floor in an accident. They insulate the carpet more to fix the problem.

Should also mention depends on which spray foam you use. If you read the Pro features it states it's a fire blocker www.greatstuff.dupont.com/content/DuPont1/en_us/products/performance-building-solutions/great_stuff/pro-gaps-and-cracks-foam-sealant.html

I found your experience really interesting that I tried to simulate it. I dead shorted a wire to the point the wire lit up but the spray foam did not ignite. Are you sure it was the spray foam igniting and staying on fire? Can you confirm it wasn't the head liner? Was the source of the short confirmed? Was it on a fused power source? There are a lot of variables to a vehicle fire and I try to address this concern in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4SnqGCvgbKYpdk
