Actually the reason why cliff stopped using the rick was because of malfunctions caused by too many modifications. Cliff liked the bright rick tone but he modified it by (rickenbacker purists look away) replacing the two stock pickups and adding a guitar pickup on the bridge of the bass that was activated by a switch. He made the switch to the aria pro and was eventually endorsed by them!
@samuel_excels
@samuel_excels 3 жыл бұрын
The actual bridge pickup was replaced with a J pickup and the neck pickup replaced with a Gibson muckraker humbucker. I've seen a Fender Jazz bass modded with mudraker humbucker replacing the neck pickup as a budget version of the Cliff Burton Ricky and thought it sounded pretty good.

Peter Hook: a small clone will get you most of the way there. EQ your amp bright, play in the upper register. Strum fairly hard. Lou: loudness is key. Hit the front of your amp hard, dime the gain, play hard. Dengler: Jazz bass, favour the neck pickup. Play with a pick. No effects. Think he generally played quite light strings and rarely changed them. Apparently not very interested in his equipment beyond the plainest functionality.

That Anasthesia (Pulling teeth) is very thick and beastly but was a bit underpowered so this is a respectable 4.5/5 personally the My Friend of Misery tone should've had the tone rolled back a bit and less chorus but it was not bad, i give it 3/5 You captured Rob's That Was Just Your Life tone perfectly, it sounded bang on for him i give you a 5/5 for this one too please do more bass focused rigs in the future :D

Good idea, and good job! It’s almost impossible to do anestesia exactly like on the record, but you got it quite well. Those pedal settings and movements are not easy to replicate.

I really hope this side of things doesn't end up in the same hole as the guitar "Sound Like" where they keep trying to replicate the same boring tones over and over again, and failing at the ones that are actually somewhat unique and warrant an actual video. As a bass player I feel this series has a dangerous possibility of getting stale fast, so please lads, pick the sounds well, even if it means more infrequent episodes. Thanks

Love this idea to compete with Rabea and Matt although Matt often plays bass when its needed which is also great! Any chance of you two doing a video comparing all the low end basses of one type say a Precision bass, between Squier CV and Sire and a few others its hard to know which one to get especially for the online shoppers who dont have all these basses in stores near them

Regarding Cliff, there was some misinformation: Joined ‘82, played on Kill ‘Em All (1983), Ride The Lightning (1984) and Master Of Puppets (1986), died in 1987 in a buss accident in Sweden. He used a mid 70s BurgundyGlo Rickenbacker loaded with a Gibson mudbucker, Seymour Duncan hot stack J and a hot Seymour Duncan Strat pickup under the bridge in place of the string mutes. He later switched to the Aria Pro II due to electrical malfunctions in the Rick after all his modifications. He used various amps, most notably Sunn O))) and Mesa Boogie, and his pedal board most famously featured a Morley power fuzz wah, a TS808, Biff Muff Pi and a CS-2

The Sadowsky basses didn't come until after the Black album. He originally used a combination of Alembic, ESP, Spector, and BC Rich. All of that of course going through his Ampeg SVT Classic and SVT-II PRO

We got any Cliff Burton nerds in the comments? (EDIT): Cliff didn't use the D-180 on any tour until 85. He also quit the Rickenbacker because there were technical problems with the heavy modifications. And I hate to be that guy, but its Compression then Morely Wah then TS9.

The Morecombe and Wise of bass playing. Totally brilliant. More clean Rickenbacker tones please (sound like Geddy Lee) the sound is monumental. Cant wait for the Christmas special.

Spector basses were used primarily on the Black Album tracks. He switched to using Sadowsky basses during that tour because moisture did not cause the electonics on the Sadowsky basses to fail during the live shows.

Best way is getting a Spector Legend bass and a good fender Rumble amp and you can pretty much get Cliffs tone out of Spector alone, I played one and got even a Rick Tone out of it as well as Les Claypools and John Entwistles Buzzard Bass tones, also Jason used Spector and Alembic while with metallica too, can't believe they weren't even mentioned

Makes sense as their live rigs are now 100% AxeFX. Saw them live a couple of times and Robert is frustratingly quiet in the live mix. I don't get why you have such a talented guy in your band and then don't let people hear him. Good video, more please!
