Those aren’t dead cicadas under your tree. Just the shedded shells of the cicadas in grub form. They crawl out of the shells and as the air hits them, their wings expand and dry out and they fly off. It’s fascinating to watch them climb out from their shells. I like to help them a little if they need it. Interestingly, the vast majority of them have red eyes, but sometimes you’ll find a blue-eyed cicada.

This scene reminded me of a story I wrote "When the cicadas sing." a nostalgia of the time when I lived in a village. For us their song was a clock to tell us the time of the day because they sang at specific times. I miss them now that I live in the city. Lucky the cicadas are in your place. I have seen videos of people eating them and its so sad. For me its like an orchestra playing. If you listen carefully there is a pattern in their ululation like different tunes playing just like in an orchestra. Anyway they have a very short life span and the song is their mating call so just humor them and let them sing their hearts out. Cheers!

Next year is going to be heavy in New Jersey. I only remember it getting insane twice in my life although it may have happened more and I am 62. You couldn’t walk without walking on them. They flew into you. The birds didn’t know what to do because they were so fat from eating them and it was like how many filet mignon‘s can I eat! The cat killed the first few that they saw but then, like you said, they had enough. it’s funny because it’s like the biblical locusts. 17 years they spend underground only to come out, grow wings, mate and die. Nature is pretty amazing. When you wonder how does this evolution take place, and how long did it take for the 17 year cycle to develop

Ugh. Cicadas. We call 'em locusts. Actually, we put pretty many expletives in front of 'locust'. I not only hate them. I'm terrified 😰 of them. True story: I worked third shift at the big mail sorting station in Cincinnati. In 1978-79 we had a massive infestation and I walked out of work the first morning of The Plague and was instantly covered with them. My shriek brought out guards with guns drawn. They wouldn't shoot them, though, Wussie rent-a-cops! They did pick them off me and knocked them off my car for me. And I called in sick that night. They were so deep in the streets that the roads were slick and people were wrecking. Thank goodness we have not another time as bad. They come in cycles. Those were a 17yr crop. Well, hello. I've subscribed and hopefully you won't mind my dropping in from time to time. My name is Donna, live outside Cincinnati in Milford and am an old great grandma that loves to see young families enjoying life and each other. I think Vlogs are so cool. If I 'd had them 50yrs ago, cyber space would be full up 😜

Cicadas are different from locusts. Locusts are truly devastating creatures and can actually cause much more mass devastation. Locusts eat a lot of crops and can destroy houses, while cicadas only suck tree sap. Cicadas can be harmful too, but minimal compared to a locust swarm. An invasion from a million cicadas wouldn't be as bad as a smaller locust swarm.
@ZomBeeNature5 жыл бұрын
The cicadas you see have no mouths. They cannot do anything but fly, sing, mate, and lay eggs. They live underground as grubs for 17 years eating root sap, but once they emerge they cannot eat anything because they have no mouth. 100% of them die of starvation. Repeat, they have no mouth. They cannot hurt anything, it is impossible. And they are only in an area once every 17 years for three weeks so they can mate. So, stop your hysterics.

No, periodic cicadas are only in the eastern part of North America, there are none in Oklahoma. None. There are none in the rest of the world. None. And in the areas of eastern North America that have them, they only emerge once every 13 or 17 years for three weeks and then all die. You might be thinking of annual cicadas that only emerge a few at a time, but a few emerge every year. When Periodical Cicadas emerge, they emerge all at once in the billions in one specific area.

@@travelingspanky6144 haha! I had actually forgotten exactly what that kind sounds like up close. BEEEEEuuuuu, or maybe BEEEEEoooow. But you are right, after they started dying and then were gone I missed them... I actually tried to find any that were alive but they were gone. Sorry I added so many comments. I guess I miss them more than I realized. 😉 It is GREAT that you recorded them at the time. All of them hanging on the trees, the piles on the ground, and especially the sounds!

Zom Bee Nature Love getting comments so its non problem at all. So crazy how there were so many everywhere you look and then before you know it you can’t find any sign that they were ever there. What part of the world do you live in?

Oh, I'm in the eastern United States. If you post a comment about your cicada video on my video yesterday about Annual Cicada shells on a tree, then you might get more views. And people can see for themselves what it was like! All I had to show was a molted skin, not anything as good as live cicadas and not what you had at all.

I did subscribe but I don't show on lists, just a number, which might be 731, but I have found KZbin is not accurate about that, so who knows?
