Another awesome day in North Alabama today friends. After really rough day yesterday, with tornadoes running all through the state, we are out catching a huge honeybee swarm from a cedar tree.
I can't believe it myself that this is the second swarm I've caught so far and both queens were captured before I ever shook the branch. This is really making swarm catching fun.
I hope you all are enjoying my 2021 Bee season kickoff with these swarm shakes. I sure am. I believe it puts me ahead of my buddy's Jpthebeeman, 628DirtRooster and Jeff Horchoff. Although I know they will catch up quick, it's nice to lead the race at some point.

I get calls like this all the time, something flying in a small hole and it looks like bees or yellow jacket wasps. sometimes even for a squirrel or a raccoon. I enjoy every new experience when it comes to removing bees from structures. Construction obstacles always seem to challenge me with every job. As a bee remover, I find the good and bad in construction design. Some things look great but make it easy for bees to set up shop and call it home also. Other times, bees move in due to a lack of home maintainace. But no matter the reason, Yappy Beeman is ready to come rescue the honey bees.

Bee's are surprisingly docile when they are swarming like that. They'll still sting you, if you agitate them too much, but it's a couple steps lower on their priorities than usual.

"Tushies in the air" - well observed ma'm!! In the rear end of each and every bee there is the NASONOV gland. When bees are swarming and or being moved they give off from that gland a pheromone, which pheromone is a signal to other bees that the queen is nearby. Two things happen in this swarm situation... a) the queen gives off a pheromone that says "here I am girls" and the bees follow her..... Beyond and further away, the message has been relayed up the line and regular worker bees begin signalling that the queen is nearby. Hence every single bee troops into the box (or whatever) behind the queen.

@@goldensky382 bees are very gentle, they generally only attack when protecting resources (their hive), but they had nothing to protect. That was just a huge group of bees who had yet to build a hive. They didn't get mad because they didn't have a real reason to.

swarming bees are relatively docile because they don't have a hive to protect, and exposure to bee stings weakens your reaction. he knows he can handle whatever happens, and as long as they're gently handled the bees are fine.

To be clear folks.... Before a colony swarms (and it is not a random act) they gorge themselves on honey. When they leave their hive they are going to be 1) homeless 2) need energy 3) need to build comb in their new home so that the queen can begin laying eggs- some 1200 a day. So.. The abdomen of each and every bee is so extended by all the honey that they have eaten that, they are unable to bend the abdomen down in order to push the stinger into you. Hurrah. Hence the apparent ease with which a swarm can be handled. You have to really rile them up to get them to sting you. The bees have about 48 hours to find and begin making their new home. If they do not they will either a) die or b) go back to the hive that they came from and that folks is how bees multiply/double their numbers.
