I'm amazed in a wonderful way that these kids, and their director, actually got across the subtext of this song, in a velvet glove. Elsa is a Nazi (Max is an on the fence coward), and this song is a celebration of the oncoming invasion of Austria. And the butler is a brilliant addition to this scene, kind of an Everyman (a la Joel Grey in "Cabaret") personifying the German populace panting for German vengeance after WW I. Well done, kids!

Except that part isn’t supposed to be belted. This is super cringe. Not her fault though.

At first I was wondering "Wait... why is the butler singing?" But then again it does make sense in context given how he ends up joining the Nazis. And/or they didn't want this guy's talent going to waste. Good move from the director!

When you're Franz in the musical and you can sing better than the Captain so you sing in place for him
@kroganpopy92066 жыл бұрын
Damn it, I should have tried to get the part of Franz! Instead I wound up as Zeller, which isn't a bad character, but there aren't any singing parts. And frankly, it would be weird if there were, or if the actor for Zeller filled in for another's singing roll.
@kroganpopy92066 жыл бұрын
I just listened to the scene where the captain sings edelweiss, and the Captain can sing very very well. I think for this scene, they wanted to give Franz a singing part, since in the original version he doesn't sing.

@@danielsolomon3794 No it didn’t. The point of the song was to expose the fault lines and lead to the break up with Elsa and the captain. If the captain left before the song it didn’t fit. Because he wasn’t fighting them throughout the song.
