Hey Rob, you did a masterful job of explaining these groovy beat patterns, regardless of how you were feeling. You've saved me a lot of work figuring this out, thanks. I've been thinking of covering this tune and Gavin is one of my fave drummers. Happy New Year!

Very good lesson, like the attention to detail. Just to note, Gavin keeps time in 8th notes with his left foot during the chorus. As a result, it makes it harder in terms of coordination but the open hi-hat that Gavin hits during the chorus off his left hand will be easier to make sound clean, rather than if you were playing it with your foot pressing down on the hi hat pedal and releasing it, if you get me. Try it yourself and you will see what I mean.

You are pretty amazing!!!! In awe of all drummers, especially you excelent ones. I am a vocalist trying to learn about interesting and unusual rhythms for a pop music theory class. This was enlightening...even if a lot over my head. (I did take a FEW drum lessons many MANY years ago !) You helped me hear it ,though,....helped me make sense of listening to this song rhythmically. Wow !!! Complex.

very good explanation! for the chorus, am i correct to say that if we were playing 8th notes on the hi hat we'd put them on the 1 +, 2 +, 3 + and 4 + so to say? and skip them on the a's?

Dude! superstoked you tackled on of my favorite grooves from one of my personal heroes.....Mr. Harrison. I'm still a beginning to maybe intermediate drummer, but love hearing stuff in odd time that actually grooves. (I think Phil Collins had it down) Thanks for great lesson.

nice lesson Rob, I like Gavin Harrison's drums too. Upon counting out the 1st part I personally would count the segment you've transcribed as 2 bars of 7/8 at 190 b.p.m. Once your inner clock matches that tempo the whole rhythm locks into place. Let your metronome play the 8th notes to really hear the feel. It really is a genuine 7 beat rhythm IMO. glad you chose this tune btw, great song.
@DrumsTheWord10 жыл бұрын
It's not fast enough for a 7/8 time signature IMO. But each to their own. Also, the melody doesn't follow two bars of 7/8. One bar of 3/4 and one of 4/4 does, IMO :)
@DrumsTheWord10 жыл бұрын
BTW, it really doesn't matter what you count it in. We both know it makes no difference to the way it's played. It's simply academic.
@michaeltingle44410 жыл бұрын
www.DrumsTheWord.com yes it has that half time feel with a very fast inner pulse. It all depends on how you hear it. The guitar sounds different when interpreted this way. Once you've heard in 7 it's hard to hear it any other way.
@DrumsTheWord10 жыл бұрын
Michael Tingle Hehe, I guess it's what you're used too. I bet you a pile o' bacon though, that they were feeling it as a bar of 3/4 and a bar of 4/4. Thanks for the constructive debate, mate! :)
@michaeltingle44410 жыл бұрын
www.DrumsTheWord.com A man can have too much bacon lol I tried 6 + 8 and that's pretty good too. 7 + 7 makes the snare have an uncanny symmetry on each bar though (on the 3& and 7 of each bar) coincidence?
@Metalhead09855 жыл бұрын
Gavin plays the hihats in 7/4 and the snare and bass are in 7/16. This came directly from him not trying to be a stickler just want everyone to know what he was thinking when he wrote that

i thnk it s easier to break it 4/4 and 3/4. This way you have a clean snare on 4.

The way you played the first rhythm it makes it lose all of its groove. Rushing and not as relaxed
@DrumsTheWord5 жыл бұрын
This is a drum lesson, Andy. It's not a drum solo. All of the information is there...and you have Gavin to show you how it's really played.

Perhaps. My time keeping isn't perfect and I am not playing along with the music or a metronome.
