You get better information on KZbin and various narratives for a much broader education. But, not EVERYTHING is actually on YT and some stuff you gotta' depend on how your school or scholarly resources present things.

When you see pictures of Plessey you would never dream that he was part African American, he looks so very much of whitte European ancestry. This makes his action all the greater because he could have just continued his life as a white man, no one but he would know. What a good decent and fair man he was.

That's my great uncle, my grandmother can pass for white but choses to be identified as black and my mother is light skinned. Most of my family on my mother's side could pass for white even though there creole

I teach this case and I used to show students the picture that's found on the internet, every year. It turns out, that's not a picture of Homer Plessy. Mr. Plessy's family has said that they have never been able to find any pictures of their ancestor. They try to put out there that it's not his picture, because people even making documentaries and such will use that picture and say it's him. Once I found out, I had to apologize to my students...

@@joshuaatkins4779 The most amazing thing is that the photo is of P.B.S. Pinchback who was another white-passing Black man in Louisiana at the same time as Plessy. He was the first person with any African-American ancestry to be a governor of a state in the U.S. It seems like with that on his resume more people would recognize him and his photo. I assume the confusion between the two dates back a long ways when someone confused the two light-skinned Black men in Louisiana making history at the same time.

@@zknight4481 Wow, thanks for the clarification. I think I finally located a photo of Homer Plessy though, but you are so right. A search for either generates the same photo. I guess since it was so long ago, most can't make the distinction.
@Maya-ub4cb
@Maya-ub4cb Жыл бұрын
@@zknight4481 I just want to add that I looked this up and it seems that P.B.S. Pinchback was actually the second and Oscar Dunn was the first African American governor in the U.S. but that’s still interesting that’s Pinchback’s photo is used

One of the things I point out to people as to why SCOTUS is not obliged nor should it follow precedents in their rulings is that human beings can evolve socially. If you insist on following precedent, then that means we should have Plessy v Ferguson or for that matter Dred Scott. Societies we hope to evolve in their critical thinking instead of just using barbs.
