The original has more authority, sounds harmonically richer. It's probably the amp section. Something I've noticed with more Behringer clones. Still I think Behringer does a great job in making these machines affordable.

Merci Olivier. They are so close as to be virtually identical, and I would have thought that any audio difference could easily down to component tolerance difference in standard production (say, in 1975 :-)

The reverb on the original is definitely a lot more usable than on the Behringer, but aside from that, I was actually surprised how well matched they are. I listened a good chunk of this video without looking at it and in a blind test it's really close, and a mix, would be virtually indistinguishable I think.

The old one (original) has a "rounder" sound, warmer and more human (frequency instability helps with this..). The closest to the old one is berhinger. I did not expect this from a company (Berhinger) that is not used to making quality hardware.excellent video! Thank you Olivier!!

The ARP’s reverb is definitely superior, but that’s the be expected considering it’s a real spring, unlike the Behringer. Aside from that, I think the Behringer is hard to beat, given the price point.

Question for those who are into synth repair and all that stuff: how maintainable is the Behringer clone? Like down the road in 15/20 years time, would you be able to repair the Behringer 2600 if it breaks? Will it actually last that long?
@robthebloke
@robthebloke 3 жыл бұрын
I'm going to guess it will be OK. I tend to work on 70's and early 80's equipment, which is all pretty much through hole components, rather than surface mount. The most common flaws you tend to find with vintage equipment are either caps that need replacing, or the physical movement of the sliders/switches/pots has caused a solder joint to break. Caps these days are far better quality, so that leaves you will solder breaks. Those are going to be super easy to repair. It is possible that in time, a fader may wear out, usually as a result of gunk getting inside, and either scratching the carbon, or bending the two little contacts under the fader (synths with rotary pots will always outlast those with faders). That may require a new fader to be installed at some point down the line. The moog MG-1 and rouge are notorious for that, mainly due to felt that decomposed into black tar in time. These kinds of problems are no harder to fix on modern equipment that vintage stuff, although you may have a tiny bit more wiggle room to get your soldering iron into position on vintage gear. If you are really unlucky, you may have a resistor that has over heated (typically somewhere near the start of the power rail), or in very rare circumstances, a failed transistor or diode. Those failures are really annoying, because identifying which component has failed is 99% of the repair time/cost. By and large though, modern surface mount components tend to be much more reliable than vintage stuff, so I doubt that would be an issue. (if they did fail, it would be more fiddly to locate the problem, but not impossible, assuming a good service manual is available) Old gear can have problems with failed IC's. Depending on the chip that has failed, that can be a massive problem. Typical ops amps (eg tl072) can be sourced at very little cost. But some synths have very specialised chips (eg the divider chips in a memory moog/MG-1, or most of the ICs in the yamaha CS series). In this regard, most of the behringer clones should be using pretty standard off the shelf components. You might have difficulty finding a replacement midi IC chip, or spring reverb IC in the 2600 clone (only in the black one! The blue and grey ones have reverb tanks). It's possible that a spring could become detached from a reveb tank if given a hard enough whack. That would be easy to fix. The thing I hate most about working on vintage gear, is when you open it up, and someone has made a bunch of modifications to it. You basically have to spend an age figuring out what the mods do, and whether they're working, usually without a service manual to guide you. So would I prefer to work on a behringer 2600, or an unmolested original arp 2600? The behringer :) The original PCBs on the arp 2600 were encased in blocks of epoxy resin. You'd have to chip away at that before you could even test a component, let alone replace it! I'd imagine the only major problems you could have with the behringer would be a worn out jack socket or fader. Pretty easy through hole stuff to fix.
@robthebloke
@robthebloke 3 жыл бұрын
Will it last 15/20 years? If you cover it with a cloth or plastic cover when not in use, to keep the dust out of the faders, you're probably good for 30 years or more with only a minor recalibration every so often. Without a cover, probably after 15 years, you'll need some deoxit F5 to clean the faders. You might need to Reflow the solder on a jack socket or fader hear and there (maybe 15 to 20 years down the line - but do so when it starts getting glitchy, rather than leaving it!!), but otherwise there's no reason it shouldn't last 40 years or so. Chances are that by then, your VCF cutoff and frequency faders will be worn out and may need replacing (if you're super worried, order some now for just the VCF - 40 year old faders are hard to source!). I think people dont realise just how cheap and nasty those vintage moogs are the inside.

@@robthebloke as a collector of old studio equipment, I would add to your excellent comments above, one factor that was common in the 1960’s 70’s and 80’s , is that most music artists and sound engineers smoked, and often heavily in the studio. Pots and sliders for some of the equipment I’ve collected and salvaged over the years have built up exhaled cigarette tar resin that requires cleaning with carefully chosen solvents. The built up tar resin is a dust magnet and over time changes the thermal dissipation characteristics of board components shaving some years off their life.. While in some rare cases, I think the cigarette tar patina may have actually preserved some components.. LOL

This needs to be set up by ear. Even 2 vintage units have different calibrations. You are sure that applying same slider positions will give very different results. You need to trust the tester. I have a 2600 FS and a Behringer Grey Meanie: they sound different. In any case if I want to match them as close as possible the slider positions will differ. That said I like both, even if their sounds will take me to different ideas (the Korg being much darker and thicker than the Behringer, thinner but yet very interesting, also with a few possibilities that are not on the OG).
