Craziest thing about this song is that there are 2 very distinct eras of Chris Cornell’s voice on display here. His youthful power in the verses and his older richness in the chorus. They ended up not releasing this one way back when as they just weren’t satisfied with it, and coming back years later they finally finished it and damn if that doesn’t show how this man aged like fine wine I don’t know what does. Fucking stellar. I miss you so much Chris.
@siriuselh6172 Жыл бұрын
I think they are two different takes. The chorus appears to have been recorded more recently. If you hear the Isolated vocal track you will notice a change of tone in the frequencies. In the demo version, for example, you can hear the old Cornell in the chorus.

@jean-lucpicard2914 Жыл бұрын
This was originally one of the several versions of Fell on Black Days, I believe you can even find a studio take on youtube with the original chorus. Here the chorus "Cry on black rain" was newly recorded material for this release. The older Chris is a nice touch that adds a lot of darkness to the song with very little, as he had developed a mature timbre with a stirring vibrato, soulful resonance and beautiful harmonies.

I truly think this is my favourite Soundgarden song and it's so quintessential of their style. Doomy, heavy, weird time signature, psychadelic intro, absolutely wailing vocals, enigmatic lyrics and such feeling. Fuck knows what Chris is going on about but it sounds meaningful and is sung so passionately. Always was and always will be my favourite musical influence.

SoundGarden is one of those bands that with RARELY exceptions ALL the members are top level musicians, just like the Beatles or PinkFloyd, where all the members were talented and multifaceted. The bassist (Ben Shepherd) is a monster, the drummer (Matt Cameron) is a killer, the guitarist (Kim Thayil) is breathtaking in the tuning and complexity of the riffs, and Cornell sings like a God of Olympus, as well as playing very well, it's a band that has everything in terms of music, composition, chords, sonority, it's like a classical music show where the Maestro is rock n roll.

Soundgarden are the true defenders of the universe. In 1994 They thwarted the mighty black hole sun on the 4th of july after being severely injured in an almost catastrophic limo wreck. This all occurred after the rise of the fabled "mailman", conqueror of planets who planned to use his evil powers to summon the mighty cthulu and take over planet earth. The heroes of Earth, Soundgarden, sacrificed there safety like suicide to defend the planet, and impressed mother Earth herself. She likes surprises. Kim Thayil tore Cthulu's fresh tendrils apart with his mighty Guild SG, Whilst Ben Shepherd summoned the mystical "spoonman" to aid Soundgarden in there fight for Earth. Chris Cornell sliced the mailman in half, then Matt Cameron impaled him with his kickstand and threw him into the Atlantic ocean where his last words were "Let me drown, this next wave will be my wave". The mailman's dead body was washed away into the ocean and never to be seen again. This day was dubbed by Chris Cornell as "The day I tried to live" and the world fell on black days as spoonman disappeared and kept his head down and Soundgarden came alive in the superunkown, waiting for the day the Earth will need them again. 16 years later, black rain began to fall on the streets of Seattle.....

I'm old and can remember when Soundgarden were totally alternative, trailing in the wake of a thousand other bands. Fuck that. This riff is a beast and the rhythm section is magnificent. By the way, they were still awesome in the old days. But again, what a riff! And what a voice!

@@ianmason2003 It was supposed to be on BadMotorFinger but I believe the audio got effed at the time when recording. They fixed it in pro tools.

No offense to Conan O'Brien, I watched his entire talk show on TBS, just to see Soundgarden perform Black Rain, it was there first television performance since 5/18/96, when the played Pretty Noose and Burden in my Hand on SNL.
