many people say how can a person like chris who was so loved do what he did..the problem is no matter how much other people love you, how much money, fame and cars you have, there is only one person we spend our whole lives with, YOU. if You dont love You, there is no fix. I speak from experience, and it saddens me to see chris and chester gone now, as I lost my father. A man so deeply admired by so many, The real sadness is that the person didn't find the love in themselves to stick around. We all want to cry and say he left us, but he also left himself. So young... there was a time where I scoffed at depression and anxiety, where I judged those who talked about how "down" they were with flippant disregard... till I went through it myself. I can tell you from experience, it isn't really being low, it's the up and down, and when it comes in waves, overwhelming you, drowning you in negativity, fear, and when it seems like it takes all your effort just to take a breath, it is really really hard to cling to whatever remnants of positivity (if any) you have left. Mine was event based and thank goodness temporary, but it gave me at least a little insight into what it is like for those who have chronic depression and how difficult it is to live with it. Never talk down, never judge, until you've walked in their shoes. I used to do just that, never again. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Soundgarden were one of the most sophisticated grunge era bands with their chord structures. Their chord structures are just so fucking cool especially on songs like this. And I've always loved Matt Cameron's drumming, a very essential part of the Soundgarden sound just like Dave Grohl was for Nirvana. The signs of Chris' suicide were everywhere, even early on. He mentions on Black Hole Sun about hanging his head, drowning his fears till we all just disappear, plus the songs Blow Up The Outside, and Pretty Noose. I'm sure there are more references. I've been a fan for decades but never listened to his words (he's their main writer) in the context of how he died.

Funfact, the song Pretty Noose is actually about a destructive relationship! However it's pretty damn ironic thats it's called Pretty Noose.

SoundGarden is one of those bands that with RARELY exceptions ALL the members are top level musicians, just like the Beatles or PinkFloyd, where all the members were talented and multifaceted. The bassist (Ben Shepherd) is a monster, the drummer (Matt Cameron) is a killer, the guitarist (Kim Thayil) is breathtaking in the tuning and complexity of the riffs, and Cornell sings like a God of Olympus, as well as playing very well, it's a band that has everything in terms of music, composition, chords, sonority, it's like a classical music show where the Maestro is rock n roll.
@jasonhall7491 Жыл бұрын
Every member in Soundgarden pushes the envelope on their individual instrument/voice. I really think Ben is one of the most underrated bass players in music. Chris has the best male voice in rock.
@TheImmortalCheneys7 жыл бұрын
the fact that Chris took his life doesn't now make this song "ironic". It's really the exact opposite of ironic. He always addressed the forces of inner darkness in every song he made - it was that core creative/destructive being that created all that amazing art he has left us with. Pretty Noose isn't ironic of his death, it's an ultimate expression of those incredibly powerful forces, just like his death was.

"'Fell on Black Days' was like this ongoing fear I've had for years ... It's a feeling that everyone gets. You're happy with your life, everything's going well, things are exciting-when all of a sudden you realize you're unhappy in the extreme, to the point of being really, really scared. There's no particular event you can pin the feeling down to, it's just that you realize one day that everything in your life is fucked." If you've seen "The End of the Tour" you will find that these words are stunningly similar to things that David Foster Wallace (who also hanged himself) said. RIP, Chris
