Definitely one of my favorite bands. They used a TON of different tunings and time signatures. Nothing was standard about these guys. I think they may have had only one song in standard tuning on that entire album, which was Fell On Black Days, I believe. Very cool video.
@SRone45 Жыл бұрын
That's why I don't learn a lot of their songs, I don't want to be constantly changing the tuning of my guitars.
@AlexandrosRaXVIII Жыл бұрын
But even of Fell on Black days there are two different versions, one is in open tuning.

It sounded like they used 2 mics that were slightly out of phase causing the comb filtering and cancelation in the mids a bit. Killer video as always man!

Very very close. One thing a lot of people forget with any kind of Rotary speaker effect, is that it is a type of speaker can they are trying to emulate. So therefore having a pedal in front of an amp (real or modelled) will never quite hit the spot. I put my rotary speaker simulator in the effects loop and it gets me a lot closer but will still never be exact. If you are using an amp modelled using software you would need to split the sound just after the amps power amp. Sen done feed to a cab emulation and another to an output and the rotary speaker pedal then back into,the computer and both feeds into the same “room” emulation. It’s quite complex and you would need to ask yourself if you can be bothered to come out of the “box”. Thank you Chris. I enjoy this stuff it’s the kind of geeky stuff I try. Self.

It would be funny to see you do a cover of their song 4th of July... though hard and heavy, even as a blues player myself, it’s a great tune

@BeefNEggs0575 жыл бұрын
Everyone would know what you’re playing for sure with that tone so it gets the job done. I’m no audio engineer but Seems like maybe the original had all the bass stripped out and the mids EQed very high compared to yours. Has that AM radio mids all the way up sound.

Still waiting for those Australian tour dates Chris. Don't forget Perth.
@edhornby48855 жыл бұрын
The original probably has a tiny bit of EQ to push the mids and roll off some bass but that's getting the track to sit in the mix of the record . Good job Chris

Nice one. Sounds pretty close. A couple of years ago I bought a Mesa revolver for the real deal Leslie guitar sound but to be honest I hardly ever use it on gigs as it’s big requires more stuff to bring. It’s just easier to use a good pedal most of the time.

I was JUST playing this song in Guitar Rig last night for some reason & BOOM, Chris does a tone video on it! Speaking of Guitar Rig 5, there is a stock preset called "Black Sun Garden" that gets you pretty close to the verse sound...but doesn't do the chorus sound. But thanks to this video, I've got a good chorus tone now. 😊 Thanks, Chris!

Good catch, Yes Cornell was a huge Beatle fan. Kim Thayil deserves a lot of credit for what he did on the track-he made it sound like a Soundgarden track.

Great video. It's pretty pretty close. Here are my observations which would I think make the sound even closer. I think that everything else the same, having his exact guitar wouldn't make almost any difference with this many effects. Original sounds a bit further away from us and more muffled. Don't know which pick up you used, maybe he used neck??? You have a more pronounced attack, the picking sound, which makes it sound closer. They might have used some compression with fast attack to tame those down, but they defenitely used some tape saturation which also rounded those peaks and introduced some nice harmonic distortion which further coloured the sound. I measured the signals with a spectral analyzer and the original has more low end which then makes mid and high frequencies (where a lot of that attack is) less pronounced. I think the original might have some more reverb, more phasing, a little bit less mids, sounds wider (more stereo), like they recorded that leslie speaker with two mics and like you said, sped up tape definitely degraded and coloured the sound making it sound more muffled. Thanks for the video!
