@@bonzo4655 grunge isn't even a genre it's more of an aesthetic for fashion and bands like this and ones from Seattle got all looped into being some sort of genre of music that sounds the same even tho bands like nirvana, Soundgarden, Melvin's, alice in chains etc don't sound similar at all and your totally right it's all just hard rock with some punk influence maybe
@cyanide_lollipop32642 жыл бұрын
@@chadtrickthereal We never used the term "grunge" here in Seattle. It was a derogatory term. The music this town gave birth to was a killer and random mix of rock, metal, punk, and whatever you wanted to call Mother Love Bone. Soundgarden, aka The Best Band of All Time, was more of a sludgey, bluesey, metall-y rawk. I mean, how could anyone possibly call Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Mudhoney the exact same musical style?? Makes no fuckin' sense.

Damn, They made an art out of being so f***in HEAVY but not being "metal". How da do dat. This makes me sad and also makes me feel old....RIP Chris
@takeadayofff7 жыл бұрын
Ditto. I reckon When Badmotorfinger came out it was considered and sounded like Metal (not thrash metal, which was mainstream at the time.) On later albums they toned it down to hard rock, but these two were definitely straight-ahead heavy metal. Differentiated from "grunge" by tight timing, intelligent melodies, and fat metal sound. Contrasted with Lollapaloosa's communist ethos of "we don't have to play any music". I'm sure in the great beyond Chris Cornell enjoys an honorable mention among the great metal warriors and occasionally kicks a poseur off the pit.

I'd definitely consider some of their early stuff Heavy Metal, Soundgarden loves Black Sabbath, and their influence is apparent in their sound
@freakingjames18205 жыл бұрын
But they were metal for the most part. Grunge isn't a genre, it's a movement. Most of the bands from the movement either played stoner rock, punk or stoner/sludge metal
@frankgile19965 жыл бұрын
@@freakingjames1820 I guess that's true; even QOTSA (which I guess were KYUSS before they were QOTSA) started in the late 80's, Nirvana were basically sludge in "Bleach", and they started as Nirvana in '87 I think (and even before that, Kurt had done other bands, like "Fecal Matter", and probably a couple more), "Alice in Chains" in '87... I think all of these guys started off pretty "sludgy"-sounding, it's just that each one of them added their own "touch" to that sludge element... Some of the big 4 of grunge started as sludge, while other didn't, and some had already been doing sludge, but weren't considered "grunge"...

I was in highschool then ('90-94). It was insanely cool, can't believe how much I took it for granted. Not only was it the Seattle bands, but stuff like Siamese Dream, GnR/Metallica stadium tours... bands like Pantera, Megedeth, Suicidal Tendencies, Faith No More, and Chili Peppers were at the height of their powers, Beastie Boys were making their comeback. Heck I saw both No Doubt and Sublime playing in the freakin' quad at my college in late '94. I was actually watching 120 minutes the moment Smells Like Teen Spirit debuted, and when MTV started playing Man in the Box and Outshined. Such a wealth of great stuff. I didn't realize at the time that it was the last great period of rock. All we cared about was there was all this great 'alternative' music that killed hair metal.

Out of all the 90's drummers people will mostly say Danny Carey is the best but Matt Cameron is without a doubt the most unique. Matt has nearly all the chops as Danny and he's entirely his own type of drummer. Matts a beast

No drummer has ever said Matt Cameron was weak. He is why Soundgarden could do what they have done. But honestly he does not come close to Danny Carey. Trust me when I say Matt is a hero of mine, but Danny is on another level. Sean Kinney is also a favorite of mine. Dave Krusen for one album captured an entire music generation also. As did Grohl. Seattle has captured a ton of excellent drummers, for me starting back to Scott Rockenfield of Queensryche.
