Hahaha what a cool guy. Not only does he reply to my comment but he goes all out and makes a mythbusters style video about it. 😎😎 Btw I never even thought about a sound deadening box around the motor. however since you came up with that idea it made me think of a material called (Dynamat) its for automotive applications usually but it is just a peel and stick sound absorbing foam kinda liner and if you were to do it on the inside of that box i think it would work amazing. Its made for cars with loud motors or stereos this lil motor would prob be nothong for it. If you get me a p.o. box or an address to send it to ill have some sent to you if you want to try it out. Im curious about it myself.

Lego is too hard for this, it will just reflect the sound. Point of it being soft foam is that it can absorb most of the Sound instead of reflecting it (something hard will reflect most of it), point of it being pointy is to maximize the number of reflections to have more absorptions/reflections

Considering that the decibel scale is logarithmic times 10 (the actual scale would be in "bels" but whoever created it decided to divide the "bels" in 10, hence decibels), the final solution cut down the noise to about a thousandth of its original power (-30 dB). Which is pretty good. For reference, doubling the distance between the source and the sensor equals to a reduction of about 6 dB, while doubling the power of the source equals to an increase of about 3 dB.

I think a big part of this is resonance and vibration. If the motor wasn't solid mounted, I bet it would shave off a large bit of volume. Iirc lego has some little technic rubber bits that could be used, and some sort of soft coupler would have to be made for the axle if you wanted to go that far with it. Even just putting little tires as rubber feet on the base plate might have taken a bit off
