Try using those old printers that only printed black which really look like a faded gray. They also took printing papers that had tons of tiny holes that ran down the side of the printer paper so it make the printer move the paper up when printing. You had tear off the holes when done printing which would end up tearing the paper if you didn't do it carefully. It usually took three to four hours to print a birthday banner and they were really loud when they printed. My parents never upgraded to a Windows 95 OS computer ,so we had to deal with a gray screened computer (No operating system) and a really loud printer. I love the video and brings back nostalgia to my childhood. Thanks for uploading.

@danfuerthgillis44839 жыл бұрын
LMAO I used to have those sounds as even as a new computer tech being trained about 17 years ago we were taught to listen to those sounds actually as part of the training. Listening to printer issues was also another lesson in order to see where the printer was failing ( not doing specific noises). All these sounds were still part of a computer techs training prior to 2000. Computers back then did spit out sounds during post. Hard drive noises were also taught as well when to know when a hard drive was failing. But these days those days are over, glad you put this video up!!!!

@InExtremis239 жыл бұрын
+Danfuerth Gillis I actually trained myself (unknowingly) to do that as a kid. I knew the exact sounds my computer 'should' make during startup. If I ever heard anything out of place (the slightest sound difference) then it would immediately get my attention. Those days taught me how to troubleshoot (including improving the fault isolation process) which helped me as I transitioned to IT in adulthood.
@danfuerthgillis44839 жыл бұрын
Most systems ( portables) are now using solid state media so you can not hear any hard drive issues. Nowadays we use software to see those issues. Fun days on the dial up modem hearing the sounds we knew when the connection was "finally" made LOL.

Great video. I used a printer much like that one, but Epson had the ink heads built on the printer so they would be completely dried up by now. That's why I stopped using mine in '99 since the color heads were blocked and a fix was very expensive. If you think your machine was a bit slow compared today, I started with a 286-16Mhz computer in '90 and it was ridiculously slow compared to today. I finished the 90's off with a Pentium MMX. Not all the hardware of that era was reliable either, many IDE drives had short lives along with poor power supplies, CD-ROM's, and especially floppy drives which usually ended up with horrible drift issues making disks unreadable except on the original drive used.

It makes me sad because with modern hardware, you have to replace everything after a while. On my 2nd pc, I had to replace the HDD and the graphics card after 5 years, while my old windows 98 pc (my 1st one) still worked when I booted it up last year ... Also, mice have dropped considerably in quality. I have a wired usb Logitech mouse which I wanted to replace (paint was coming of) after 7 years of heavy use. The replacement Logitech was wireless and died after a year already ...
@DounutCereal11 жыл бұрын
Agreed, they need to makes things like they used to. They used to last forever, even some of the old laptops I have still work with nothing wrong and they're from the 90's. My newest computer has had countless repairs and replacements, my replacement set of hinges just broke again the other week for example. My logitech mouse lasted about 4 years before dying, the old ball mouse with this computer is working fine after what? 15 years...
@frozencheetos10 жыл бұрын
DounutCereal As sad as it is, building things to last forever isn't very good for business, and they know that. There's even a term for it and a documentary that explains it all in vivid detail. Google "planned obsolescence". That doesn't mean there aren't things with better build quality. There are, but they're just way more expensive than your average consumer product.
@DounutCereal10 жыл бұрын
frozencheetos That is unfortunately true, planned obsolescence is both a great business point but in the long run is not as good as it seems. It creates a lot of electronic waste that, to be honest, isn't as recycled as well as it could be since most people just dump things straight in a bin instead of the recycle or electronic collection points. I would really hope that those more expensive companies with better build quality and/or parts support win out over the 'throw away' manufacturers.
@DFX4509B10 жыл бұрын
DounutCereal DOS or Win9x-era hardware is still useful for gaming, for one, if using a 10GB hard drive though, I'd recommend Win98se or FreeDOS because of FAT32 support if building a classic gaming rig though, and a PII with 128MB RAM would be sufficient for pure DOS, however a PIII with 512MB RAM would be better for Win98, and a Soundblaster 16 would work for a sound card in both pure DOS and Win98 and an S3 Trio 64v would work for a GPU in both pure DOS and Win98. Stay the hell away from ATI Rage if going pure DOS though, as DOS support is horrendous for that GPU. As for an every day PC, late XP-era and newer hardware would work fine with a lightweight Linux distro of some sort, Xubuntu and Lubuntu would be the easiest to deal with, followed by OpenSUSE with LXDE or Xfce, Manjaro with LXDE or Xfce, Debian with LXDE or Xfce, or Arch with LXDE or Xfce.

I'm sorry to say but it's not for sale, I like it too much to let it go. However, ebay has had some really good listings for simmilar vintage machines when I have browsed so it might be worth a look. Some go for only 2 or 3 hundred too

@1sonyzz The computer sounded like it had 2 hard drives in it. The one I think you are talking about is the Quantum hard drive. The older ones make that lovely seek sound. It was most likely a Quantum ProDrive or a Quantum Fireball.

Beautiful to me. I had wanted a PC for 5 years badly when in 1994 I got one. Hearing that PC boot up and check floppies laden me giddy

Wow, I had a similar system in the mid-90s and if totally forgotten that startup tune. I kinda miss it now.

This takes me back That printer is the loudest one I've heard ever, save the old dot matrix ones. Good nostalgia trip, thanks.

Exactly how my computer was! I used to own a Packard Bell from 1994 or 1995, I don't quite know, but it was exactly like this! The computer ran great until about 2009, then it stopped working one day. So unfortunate :(

Brings back memories of the computer lab in my elementary school. I remember hearing all of the computers starting up every morning.... my class was at the other end of the hall. lol

Almost 400k... lol... if nothing we're certainly a nostalgic generation. Got to know those beeps pretty well, they were like song lyrics stuck in your head. You knew right away if some were missing & it wasn't going to boot.

Well I'm not to sure to be honest and she's still packed away from a recent move but from memory there is about 24-25,000k of RAM, 2 HDD's pretitioned into 4 drives, I think a couple 400MB drives and a couple 200MB ones. There used to be a 5.25 inch floppy drive installed and the connections all remain inside (however the space now contains on of the HDDs). It has a Realtek audio card as far as I remember but I will have to double check all that when I have it set up again.

I remember when my family first got a laptop. I would always make sure to wait and power it off correctly because thats what you had to do with a tower, " It is now safe to turn off your computer" When I saw someone just close the lid, it blew my mind.

Agreed, I've had quite a few devices die on me and yet this computer (and a few other things) seem to just keep going and going.

My computer was newer than that, but my grandpa had a pretty old one for a while. Had a digital display on it that showed the clock speed, turbo button, and everything. Even had Windows 95 on it. Playing games on that was pretty neat. He even had an old (we're talking mid 90s old) fishing game I played a bit that had some neat guitar music that I can't even find anymore. My brother and my grandma both used to have the same kind of printer too. So many childhood memories with these things. My Windows 98 computer I had years ago booted down automatically, but I think my first one had that "It is now safe to turn off your computer" prompt when you shut it down. I got that one when I was about 5 or so. Used to have it in the living room. Don't know how long I had it.
