I've been testing out a pair of S400 mkII for a few weeks now and Steve's description 100% mirrors my own. My own speakers are Meridian DSP5200.2 (~€10,000RRP) and the Buchardts absolutely destroy them for midrange tonality, realism, soundstage layering and 3-dimensionality and most importantly, expressiveness and musicality. The S400 mkII is the type of speaker which reminds you that mid-range is absolutely everything. I also really like the technical back story to these, particularly the attention to matching woofer and tweeter directivity at the crossover point, and paying particular attention to maintaining accuracy of response off-axis. The fact that the bass is really deep, textured and quite fast is just a bonus. In my opinion these are a very special speaker.

I attended a demo of Meridian's flagship active DSP speakers at a hi-fi show in Bristol, UK. I ended up walking out after 30 minutes and said "meh". Same for B&W.
@mattholland315
@mattholland315 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottlowell493 I’ve never liked B&W speakers. Even their high end ones. Just way too coloured and engineered to sound overly detailed in demo situations. Meridian’s 8000XE has completely lost its predecessor’s classic smooth, 3-dimensional, realistic, tonally rich sound in favour of delivering a clinical, joyless aural assault. As a big Meridian fan (and former employee) I was really disappointed, although their typical customer is not an audiophile and commercially this company knows what it’s doing.

It was good to see you hi-lighting the importance of the crossover in this speaker. I really appreciate you showing us that photo of it and all the high quality parts that goes into that unit. I am sure the Buchardt engineers took a great deal of time in design to produce a speaker with such great sound. It’s also reassuring to know that when a company like Buchardt sells a speaker at this price point they provide a quality crossover that is inline with that cost. As a happy owner of a pair of Klipsch RP600M’s thanks in part to your glowing review of it and naming it “speaker if the year”. I have also watched GR Research’s review of the RP600M and his Criticism of the crossover design and quality of it’s components. I am to say the least, extremely skeptical of redesigning the 600m’s crossover as I am sure the Klipsch engineer’s we’re trying achieve a certain sound signature and to my my ears they were very successful in doing so. However, after seeing this Buchardt design I could definitely understand the potential benefit of upgrading the crossover components in the 600m’s. Realizing the Klipsch’s come in at a much lower price point than the Buchardt’s it’s kind of interesting to me to see how far up the ladder that change would take the 600M’s. As a DIYer I may in the future be making those upgrades. Thanks again for this review and all your great reviews!

Hiya Steve. I quite agree the BUCHARDT S400 MK II is a splendid speaker it sent my GET Triton 2+ reeling as to soundstage. Took my system to my friends BUCH´s, serious stuff there(had a minor mishap sent the full boost through the speakers: 1000 w 4 Ohm, just for a few sec and yet they survived, incredible), given some help in the low freq they excelled with some of the best sounds in my experience), lent an ear to the Mk I when they arrived and weren't really impressed, but Mk II NICE, I have been tweaking ever since, my room is not perfect, but trying to get that letting go on the outside of the speakers, makes me long for my old Maggies(even doubt they would beat the Buch´s). Tnx for a superb site. All the best from Denmark. Oz

I've got about 34hrs on mine and they're getting much better, but still a little less exciting than I thought they'd be, slightly muddy and flat 🤷‍♂️ When I first got them I was really impressed not realizing I had my loudness button turned on in my amp, but they were pretty lifeless without it. Hoping it's not a bad pairing with amp and dac as it was so good with some little triangles I had before! Anyway sorry to bug, but lemme know your thoughts if u have a sec 🤙

I am interested in both the KEF R3 Meta and the Buchardt S400 Mark2 for upgrading my dedicated listening only station in my living room. I listen to jazz but mostly classical and opera in particular. I like accurate but not too analytical and a bit of warmth with a great soundstage. I don’t like cold. The only speakers I have listened to at home since 1988 are the Yamaha NS-1s which are now connected to my AV system in my den and I am having a hard time since the Yamahas are (for me) so good. I have heard the R3 Metas at Best Buy and liked them for the price compared to the others they had. However I have heard them described as airy and spatial which makes me think thin? I love what you said about the imaging which is important to me but am wondering if the Buchardt S400 Mark2s have more richness? If the Buchardts are thicker, does that make them muddy or less accurate? I need for the bass, midrange and treble to be equally good and balanced. Are the KEFs more accurate? More refined? After watching a lot of reviews I am wondering if I will like Buchardt better than the KEFs? After listening to the NS-1s for so long will I like ANY other speakers?

Steve, before seeing this video I was aware of this cross-over and the fact that Buchardt had hired a competent electrical engineer to design them. If the average audiophile knew that even "certain" so called high-end speaker manufacturers really cheap out on this very important speaker component, well, they'd be shocked - I was. So, if Buchardt has gone to such great lengths with the C-O then I suspect they have done no less with the construction and design of everything else that makes this speaker what it is. Steve, it is so good to hear your take on what many others have reviewed as ... a truly well designed "everyman" audiophile speaker. I wish you and the team at Buchardt, the best for 2022.🇨🇦

This speakers blew my mind and to me honestly they sound much different than the mk1. The mk2 has better midrange and sounds more 3 dimensional to me. This is way better than the mk1 imo. I have the dynaudio contour 20 and I AB them and honestly I find this MK2 better to my taste. Abit more warm but the details retrieval is better. In any case it's a lot of money relative to the Bucharts. How can we really get a sense of what the speakers would be like with comparably priced electronics? Would Steve himself ever buy a system with the relative costs for speakers and electronics as we see here?

Hi Steve. First time commenter, long time watcher. I currently have a Hegel H120 running to a pair of CM6 S2’s and a small ML Dynamo sub. I’ve had the itch to upgrade a while and have always loved what I have heard about the s400. It finally feels like a no brainer upgrade and ideally I’d like to drop the sub out of the system. Gut reaction there? My primary reason to drop the sub is to clean up a smaller living room, making the stereo less imposing. I do miss the sub when it isn’t on with the B&W’s but I always set it to subtly fill out the bottom end and it sounds like the S400 might fill that out in its own.

Thanks for watching Brian. I wish I could supply a definitive answer, but possibly the S 400 will be all you need. But once you’ve heard what a sub can do it may be hard to live without it.

@@bgrimes FWIW Here are a pair of B&W N805’s and they benefit greatly from a good sub. The original S400 has so much bass that I feel it’s really optional. The new S400 is supposed to have deeper but slightly less pronounced bass (the old one could considered boosted). I also think it will really wary with room and placement. Case in point I moved my S400 5 cm closer together and 5 cm up and stopped existing a substantial room mode. At the end of the day I love the S400 but quite prefer the bass out of the B&W + Rel sub.

@@RigVader I appreciate your time taken to reply to my question. In the last 24hrs I’ve done a bit of a 180 and moved in a new direction. Instead of Buchardt, I’ve opted for a pair of Evoke 30 floorstanders from Dynaudio. They are in the mail and I will have a better idea of what in just did, good or bad, in about a week.

Looking for an integrated AMP for the Buchardt S400 mk2 in the range around 500 €. Since im a "beginner" im wondering if i need to have an amp that matches the speaker price, but my feeling tells me thats would be a little too much for the start. Any recommendations?

They designed the speaker upside down. The tweeter should be above the bass driver because you want the tweeter to be at ear level. Now one has to use a taller stand to get it at ear level. Great review Steve.

@@luksocat I've been thinking very seriously about buying these, but performing well at low volume is a must for me. This is the question I came to this review in hopes of having answered. I wonder if the MKII's are more expressive at low volume, but what you're saying is alarming. Steve mentioned he found himself giving them more power, which obviously isn't a great sign for me, but that could signify something different.

@@kenhiett5266 I'm running off a PS Audio Sprout 100watt class D amp. I will upgrade one day, but fair to say the power isn't ideal. Not sure what 400w would do at lower listening levels, but I'm sure there would be an improvement. I know they say their amp will help, but when I do upgrade I plan to go the traditional multiple component route.

@@luksocat This information helps a lot, thank you. I was planning on powering these with an old Sunfire Ultimate receiver I'm having refurbished. I'm thinking the forgiveness of the S400 would pair well with this old beast and maybe the 200 watts per channel will help a bit.
