+SoundsAndGear.com I have an Arturia Beatstep which is okay as a controller and SparkLE which is good for crafting sounds but has some niggles such as having to be hooked up to a computer, bugs and latency issues. This on the other hands looks like it just works... which is a relief! I always thought the Electribe was more techno orientated, good to see it can be used any way you see fit by importing samples etc.
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын

+Ave Mcree Cool, glad you got it going. Maybe they changed it in a firmware. I have no desire to try it again though unless they improve the sequencer and pad response lol.
@AveMcree8 жыл бұрын
SoundsAndGear.com can't lie about that since I've owned both the MPC2000 and currently own the MPD232. The pads aren't the best. However, I'm not tripping about the results of sequencer not having the ability to not quantize.
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
+Ave Mcree I don't use quantize so not being able to turn off the grid is huge for me. Couldn't really get the feel I like. I wouldn't mind the pads if they improved the velocity curves/response.

This is probably the best showcase/review of the Electribe Sampler I've found on KZbin thus far. I am disappointed however that you did not deal with timeslicing a sample loop. Yeh I know you sample that Volca Keys note but I'd like to have seen you import, slice then sequence a 2 bar sample into something new. I'm seriously considering buying the Electribe S2 Red and your video is really encouraging. I've got a Novation Circuit but I want something on which I can chop samples. Thanks.

+SoundsAndGear In which case, what bit of kit (in the same price bracket) would you recommend for beatslicing and sample chopping? Why wouldn't you recommend the Electribe Sampler2 for sample chopping? If it's no good as a sampler, why not get the Blue Electribe or the Novation Circuit? Can you recommend a good Sampler for
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
The sampling/chopping on Electribe is not very robust. I would look into something purpose made for that workflow like the MPC, Maschine, and similar samplers.

I have an E2S... I bought it months ago, didnt like the limitations and bought an MPC1000 and grew to love its capabilities and features. Just when I was about to sell my E2S I started making a beat on it and realized that i wanted to keep it because i like what it DOES do... The design and build are excellent except for the one thing of the relationship between the display, the oscillator and value knob, the hand turning said knobs and the eye reading the display.... Sometimes i think the display should be on the right side but i guess left handed people will like this. One question I have is can I in Pattern Set mode, press a series of pads and have the machine play the patterns back in that sequence?

@thankgodforatheists44738 жыл бұрын
At this price point the Electribe is a very good sampler. If you want a cheaper one you can go for the Korg Volca Sampler or the Akai MPX16 though it has no sequenser. If you can afford an Elektron Octatrack or a Pioneer Toraiz SP-16 you will never have to wish for anything more when it comes to sampling.
@anthonyb.29837 жыл бұрын
If you dont like the velocity sensitivity that much, that's what the Amp knob is for. I also see nothing wrong with the quantize, since you have options like "Off Beat" and sensitivity to fine tune it to give it a more natural sound. It appears to work better than Ableton even with Ableton's quantize turned off. The Electribes have always had a more organic sequence sound than most sequencers. One thing I havent seen anybody mention is the Accent button feature the old Electribes used to have. Im going to still cop the new red Electribe sampler with or without the Accent feature, but I'll miss it.
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
If that works for you, cool but controlling via Amp knob does not equal velocity sensitivity. I like to actually play my sounds in, with velocity. So for me, the pad sensitivity is horrible. The sequencer can be worked around, but again, I don't quantize at all, and don't like programming, nudging, moving steps, etc...I'm used to simply playing in what I want so for me there are much better options in terms of sequencing. However, for those that don't mind all the extra steps and options for tweaking after the fact, they'll probably enjoy this. Thanks for watching!
@anthonyb.29837 жыл бұрын
SoundsAndGear Sometimes what appear as limitations in hardware can be blessings in disguise. When I owned the Electribe ES-1, it had no velocity, and I'm pretty sure no way to turn off the quantize. Using the Accent feature, it created some of the most organic and least robotic sounding drum patterns out of all the sequencers I've used, including the MPC2000 and Emu SP1200 to name a couple of the dozens. Has the OS upgrade they did for the release of the red Electribe sampler addressed any of your sequencer and velocity concerns? I've heard many people say they addressed the key issues with the new OS.
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
Word. Everyone is different though. I'm all for quirks of different products, and they do cause you to work differently. However, if I don't like the workflow overall, or I can't get the feeling I want without a bunch of steps then I'm not going to use it. I just prefer a different way of playing/sequencing than what this can offer. I do not know if the update addressed any of the issues as I no longer have this device.

@Swenglish8 жыл бұрын
My guess is the data on that one pad is so you can turn off the metronome and put a hi-hat or kick on there if you feel like it and get started without those annoying bleeps. For live use. My big gripe with this device is that patterns are only 4 bars. If not for that limitation, I would probably buy one.
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
+Tasteful Tuna Could be for that reason I suppose, seems weird to lose a pad for that though. More than 4 bars would be nice too.
@Swenglish8 жыл бұрын
I don't think the idea is to "lose" a pad, but to have a pad ready just in case, which you can erase when ready. I kind of get what they were going for. I'd probably find it convenient to just load a closed hi-hat and leave the metronome off (although it'd make sense to have a menu option to turn the feature off). With the 4 bars, however, I have no clue what they were thinking.
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
+Tasteful Tuna Yeah, I'd prefer an option to change/control the metronome sound from the global menu lol

+Forsoicanspeak same as first I haven't really seen an alternative for something like this quite yet, I just feel like it could be improved upon for my own personal use, but as it is, still useful for many, including myself, just wish for some extra changes for how I like to work.
@forsoicanspeaksameasfirst6368 жыл бұрын
+SoundsAndGear.com thank you, great video not many (useful ones) out right now. good stuff. It seems like once you chose a sample (sound / patch / preset / etc) for a pad, you can then use the other 15 (16 total) for just that one pad - meaning kind of like each pad has its own subset of 16 pads to use for sequencing - am I off here or is that basically how it works?
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
+Forsoicanspeak same as first you can use "keyboard" mode, which pitches the sample across the 16 pads. But you only have 16 pads (parts) in total.
@forsoicanspeaksameasfirst6368 жыл бұрын
+SoundsAndGear.com nice, thank you. I dont mean to be "anal", but in other words 16 parts total, with 16 pads to control (pitch) each individual part. Sort of like "layers" of sequences lying on top of each other (synonymous with a multi track recording, each track is a pad and each pad can be pitched with the all 16 pads). The volcas sort of work that way, 10 parts and all the keys control each part. Sorry to go on, Im still wrapping my head around this thing. I might order it tomorrow as well (hopefully) if all works out. thank you for your time and (again) excellent review

Hey there! Nice video, though I kinda "fast forwarded" some of it, because I was looking for specific info about importing your own wavs. Like how easy and painfree (or painful) the process is? Can it read folders and scroll through files without hassle (a lot of samplers actually can't)? Is it streaming samples from the card or importing it to internal memory (if so, how big?). Some people said that it had lag switching from pattern to pattern, is that true!? I am used to an Elektron Octatrack and if this is good enough and useable I would use it as a secondary sampleplayer so I have much more tracks for samplebased percussion and FXs mostly. Thanks in advance. (I couldn't get answers to these more abstract/advanced questions from their website).
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, and no problem with skipping, I do the same! You can load samples from the card, it loads them into memory on the device, it's a little different in how they handle it but you can browse your folders if it's setup the way they instruct in terms of the folder structure. Which it should do automatically when you format it in the unit.

Hey, can you sample the same way with korg electribe music production station? I'm an absolute beginner and I would like to know what is the main difference between the two units. Thaks in advance, great vid!
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The main difference is actually one is a sampler and one isn't. Also, I believe the non sampler version has more filter types as well.
@fredrikwaara14008 жыл бұрын
Don't have this one yet, but I'm pretty sure there are different velocity sensitivity curves to choose from. Probably deep in a menu somewhere, though. Btw, have you tried Electrons Octatrack. Doesn't export to Ableton, but otherwise a pretty capable machine...
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
I tried all of the velocity settings, still not as sensitive as I would like. I had an elektron a4, eventually just didn't like the OS/User Interface.

Hi!, one question please. I am wondering if there is a chance of routing the metronome in the headphones jack or something in order to have the sequence played on the p.a. without the click and the drummer have it own tempo (sorry for my english) i hope you had understand me
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
I do not know if that is possible, no longer have the unit to check it out.

I know it's only a little over 200 seconds mono sampling time. Can I have a ton of time on the sd card samples & just choose what I load & unload to the unit without removing the card?

It's been a while since I used this, I can't remember if you can pick and choose what you load from an sd card.

If I want a portable sampler that is easy to use (i have no experience at all) and not too expensive, is this the sampler i should go for? I would mostly import my own samples and (try) to some Hip Hop oriented music... I don't want it too easy as well, because i want to improve and get a better understanding of samplers and music in general. Anyway, I'm just looking for something that I can have a lot of fun with and carry around wherever I go!
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
This is really the only thing out there right now, other than maybe the Roland Sp404 which is also another option. Unfortunately companies aren't making many portable samplers these days.
@louschuler68947 жыл бұрын
That's the option I would prefer too... I don't know which electribe i should go for though, electribe 2 or electribe sampler 2? What's the difference and which one should i pick?

Louis Schuler you could get an Mpc500. Its small, portable and can run on batteries. Its a very capable and overlooked sampler.

well maybe you should also consider the Novation circuit. also very straightforward. Great builit-in synths and allows great creativity. AND the Circuit is beautiful, whereas the Korg is really ugly. Though the more I look at it, the more I want it. But chekck out the Circuit.

+SoundsAndGear.com well right now I just work in Reason and Logic, so whatever I get will probably be different. I work in loop mode, so something that can overdub or add tracks during a loop, and have 2 loops to switch between song sections? I'm trying to do this live too, without stopping the sequencer to add sounds. Can I do this with an MPC or Electribe?

Nice review as always! I got my esx2 since the day it has came out and i love it but i agree, the sample management and the menu structure is sucks. But it's still a kind of cool unit i use it most for sequencing multiple external gears via midi. There isn't any other polyphonic midi sequncer for this money.
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
Nice man, I feel you, I know all gear has it's quirks and even with those issues it's still useful. Especially being battery powered, that's probably what I like about it most, using it as an alternative to an iPad for mobile ideas.

Yes there is, and cheaper, with a different workflow. The novation circuit. And with the new firmware it also works as a sampler.
@Gergely50008 жыл бұрын
+djoy38 with a circuit you can drive 3 external gears via midi ch1-2 and 10. with this one you can sequence 16 external gears via16 midi channel. I like the circuit too btw.

you make an empty pattern were you save all the global parameters you want (velocity whatever) as a template, then you dont have to do it again everytime. Also, shortcut for trig.pad velocity ON/OFF is SHIFT + pad number 11
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I showed the shortcut, I still think it's a pain and even when on the velocity isn't to my liking, I feel it's not as responsive as it could be, which is a hardware limitation. I'm sure they could tweak it via firmware though! Thanks for watching.

So I finally got me the Electribe sampler 2 and have to deal with one issue which gives me hard time. Well, lets say you create a beat on an empty pattern and save it/export it on the sd card as an Ableton live or wav file. Switch the Electribe sampler off then when you switching it on again and want to import what you have recorded I cannot import the whole saved track from the SD as a whole but just the kicks, snares, etc seperately and also as stereo on 2 pads each one. When I transfer from my SD card the recorded track into my DAW appears and plays as a whole but in Electribe Sampler my beat is "broken"... So please inform me about this issue cuz it makes me scratch my head everytime. Thanks in advance!
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
+trellastabouna You'll want to save it as a project for electribe use, export is specifically for getting it out of the electribe for use in Ableton or another daw.

so what sort of oscillators are left over from the synth version? are any of them still like the better ones or did they leave it with all the crumby wave-tables that no one likes...so you have to buy both the synth model and the sample model.... but also what filters are left over and left out in the new sample 2 model???? im curious....but if you wanted too...couldn't you just sample a synth sound into the electribes sample set...and just use that sample as an oscillator? i dunno...im still starting out at this...im guessing theres a reason that wouldn't be useful .... help me out here someone???
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure all of the differences as I've only used the sampler, but I was looking for some of the extra filters and found out they are only in the synth version. You could sample synth sounds and use them as an oscillator if you want, the main difference is that you can add your own sounds to this one and the other one can't.
@777curiosity7 жыл бұрын
oh ok so the Sampler one can add in different say synth samples? And the synth version your supposed to program your own sounds using the inbuilt oscillators and filters etc??? i guess sorry to be dumb?
@SoundsAndGear7 жыл бұрын
Yep, the sampler lets you import sounds along with using what's there, the synth doesn't let you import your own sounds you use what is already there and create your own from their waveforms as well.

Different workflow, just depends on what you're trying to do. Also performance can be a reason if you're into that. Plus it's fun to get your hands on stuff :)
@777curiosity7 жыл бұрын
yeah depends on what you want to do...this is a good piece of equipment to program sequences and also beats and melodies....but using something like ableton live 9 i would describe that as MUCH more complex...and thus allowing you to do more with your creativity...assuming you can learn the ableton interface....which is extremely user friendly...if not a bit daunting at first... you sit through some tutorials and you get the idea in a few sessions...

Could someone help me please ?I'm torn between the sampler and electribe 2 synth. I want to jam away from my PC.. but maybe not limited to the sounds on a synth (which always sound a bit 'cheap' to me)..Can I load multisamples / wav samples to the sd card and then use them? This would make the sampler a better option for me.. Are you limited by size / length of sample? How many can you put on the machine.. and do you need to do a lengthy sample add process every time you turn the machine off and on again?
@SoundsAndGear8 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I had this in for review so I can't be sure on the answers, the sample loading process isn't all that bad, however you want to make sure you save every time before turning things off. As for multi samples, it's not designed so much with that in mind but you can create instruments by loading a sample and using keyboard mode. You have about 99 seconds for user samples, in 500 slots, but you can also delete the factory samples if you wish. That totals around 4 minutes or so of sample time once you do that.
