I'm really looking forward to seeing the evolution from episode to episode - I hope you guys are able to do a full 10 episodes from the 20's until the modern day!

I don’t get to play Dixieland often but a good friend of mine did before covid. Snare, rack and bass for drums. Used to use a wood block but he just plays the rim (diecast hoop) and a small crash and hi hats. I pulled a lot from Dixie during my big band time and when I play jazz here on the MS Gulf Coast. Nola is an 1 hour away and Mobile is as well which is the home of Madrid Gras. Gotta stay sloshy and loose. Playing cleanly makes it unauthentic and you need the dirt. I recently picked up a 40’s radio king in 13,14,16,26 and that really sets the whole vibe. Calf on the bass and coated single ply on toms. Bass is tuned high and open since you play it lightly and for accents. Play the swing pattern on the snare and an open press roll on the backbeat and you’re set.

I am very lucky to have my great grandfather’s 1919 Ludwig and Ludwig kit only a 6 lug snare drum but has that 20’s black beauty body. It’s my favorite snare drum sound.

Very cool. Clearly from a time where drums were so much background compared to much modern music today. And quirky, in my view! I love the focus on quiet sounds and the odd loud one, very interesting dynamics for us modern drummers to think about. Much like others have commented, I very much look forward to more episodes in this entertaining series!

I did the cowbell/wood block/splash/China thing years ago for a "live band playing to silent film" project, after getting the idea from orchestras doing a similar thing with Bugs Bunny cartoons. I sometimes still use the percussion when going for a Billy Martin kinda vibe or playing Latin jazz, but it's not often.

So looking forward to this series! Whether or not I use any of these, I’m intrigued by the breakdown of individual component sounds.

Speaking my language! Trad jazz is a load of fun because it's impossible to be too campy with the fills/traps--just don't crash on the 1.
@TsunamiBeefPies3 жыл бұрын
This should be interesting. I thought your choices here were pretty spot-on. Listening to recordings from that era are fascinating. You heard players cobbling together all sorts of things to try to expand their vocabulary on those early 'trap' kits. One thing you might have included here that I've seen and heard a lot would have been a washboard. Looking forward to see what you do with the floor-level "sock cymbal."

What was the muffler for the bass drum? Did you say "drum G"? Looks simple enough; a couple of specialty clamps, and a piece of cord strung between them. Nice idea!

Loving that Zildjian 1” A Splash. If I can't get a 1 inch splash cymbal myself, can I just use a Canadian one dollar coin?

The sock cymbal / lowboy setup came about during the mid-to-late 20’s and wasn’t widely used (and even then, still a bit spotty) until the 30’s.

Thanks guys, this is really helpful! Would it be possible to suggest similar heads from other brands? Ta! I've always been into vintage stuff from being a big fan of Gene Krupa. I like older drumming styles because the drums feature more than the cymbals, and I just find that really beefy and satisfying. I love Golden Era musicals stuff, playing swing rhythms with big orchestras and catching all the hits, and I love playing for dancers, especially for tap. Here's a recent video of me doing exactly what you're demonstrating here - trying to get 20s sounds out of my old Pearl Export. I haven't got the bass drum sound how I want it yet and there are a few other tweaks to make, but I reckon I'm getting close. There is no vintage gear in this clip, hope you like it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYDLenmlqLeoeq8

Good info but after looking at how long the video was and seeing that around 20% of the time was spent on the commercials for Skillshare I think you should consider just posting the sponsorship at the beginning and end graphically while saying brought to you by your sponsor and keep the commercial down to 30 seconds per episode because around 150 seconds of that stuff out of 782 is too much time for your viewers to waste. I watch KZbin because I hate commercials and my ad blocker doesn't skip through hidden commercials in your content I'd like to click away from so be considerate of subscribers like me who also clicked the bell icon.

Thanks for watching! We're grateful for Skillshare's support as it allows us to experiment with micro series like this new one. Regarding the length of the ad, we have information that we need to communicate and I can assure you that it's no longer than it needs to be and is placed where we'd like it. None of this has anything to do with being inconsiderate of subscribers, whether they've chosen to turn on notifications in order to hear about our new videos or not. Ad revenue and occasional episode sponsors along with our dedicated group of Patreon members make it possible for us to continue producing this series for free. Use of ad blockers actually cuts back on that support. If you'd like 100% ad free content from us, please consider joining our Patreon and supporting our work.

That’s quite a bit of money to spend if you don’t absolutely need a drum/set of drums quite like that. Always best to look at the situation objectively and be sure to check it out in person to see if it’ll really deliver on your expectations.
