The DP, or Director of Photography, is the person on a film set in charge of camera angles and set lighting. He/she works with the DIT and post production to make sure the show looks the way he or she believes it should. Not only is this the person that controls the look of the show, it's someone the boom operator doesn't want to make mad.
In recent years the lighting game has changed. Large, hot light sources are being replaced by smaller LED fixtures. DPs have different skillsets when lighting with them. Some will light you out because they don't know how to properly light with them and some know exactly what to do. In this video I'll discuss what you, as a boom operator, needs to know about modern vs old school lighting.

Me again Allen, back to say once more how blown away I am with your ability to convey information in such an efficient way. Came for audio advice and stayed for the deeper layered content. I teach niche bird identification classes through video and I’ve learned so much from you that helped me in so many ways. Not only do my videos have superbly better sound quality (thanks again for that), but I’m able to (imo) keep things more streamlined and focused after adopting some of your approaches to explaining information. I personally found it hard for me, being an expert in my field, to condense my thoughts down for an audience that varies from professionals with years of field experience and lifelong dedicated hobbyists, to entry level and first day beginners. I struggled to find a balance between making it technical, worthwhile and informative, while being easy to digest for viewers with less experience. Gleaming some notes from you’re talent I’ve been integrating some aspects I found to be amazing for doing just that. Sorry for the long comment on an old video but this one is a personal favorites. I’ve been recommending it in particular to some fellow educators as a great example of how to balance info for a broad level of consumer experience. I think is astonishing how informative and interesting it is for someone like me, with no background in film, but with so much valuable advice for people who actively work or plan on going into film. Just wanted to than you and let you know how much I appreciate you and all the truly *sound advice* you share.

Thank you for this comment. I make outlines for the 3BO videos and often find myself going in other directions then pulling it back in with another topic. Thank you very much for this comment.

Being Dutch some years ago I googled DP. After studying the search results with a healthy curiosity, I asked a DP on KZbin what his working day looked like. I think we some how were on a different level. Fortunatelly someone else reacted telling me DP also stands for Director of Photography. That helped.

had the same situations on a recent feature i done, a lot of skypanels and alladin lights and some more micro led light panels and interestingly some new custom panels made by gaffer team happy see all these new innovative lights but still i pondered in some shots if that or this was even necessary since primarily the the team wanted to shoot most using natural lights. PS "see if i can read the future" nice snarky comment duly noted :)

Yeah, I'm convinced sometimes they put out lights just to justify their budget. If you don't use it, you lose it.

I didn't get why we'd rather not to come at an angle to the brightest light on set (24:49) Great video though ! Maybe having some kind of drawings would make it a bit easier to understand ?
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 4 жыл бұрын
Coming in at an angle from the brightest light will cast a long shadow of the boom vs going inline to the light casts a shadow over a small area of the background.

The softness of a light is determined by it's size relative to the subject it's lighting. A small Christmas led can be a soft light if you try and light an ant.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 4 жыл бұрын
I would think it would be more of a spotlight on an ant.
@8lec_R
@8lec_R 4 жыл бұрын
@@SoundSpeeds in my mind, it's a soft light but since it would be so close to the ant the roll-off would be sudden (cuz of inverse square law) and therefore the parts that are close to the light will be lit and the parts away from the light will fall into shadows very quickly. Also, let's say we try and put a hair (ant sized boom pole) in between the ant and the led, the shadow of the hair would be pretty much invisible. Atleast that's how I picture it in my mind 😂

The sound department sometimes is the treated as the country cousin in prep and production. What has been your best on set experience? What (or who?) made it great for you and your team?
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 4 жыл бұрын
What a great question. I've a lot of good times on set but recently I had a great time on P-Valley season 1. It's not out yet (watch for it this summer). It was a lot of fun because it was done differently. Sound was respected and it presented many challenges. It's a show that takes place in a Mississippi strip club so we weren't able to get lavs on the girls all the time. We did put out plants, two booms a lot and a lot of hair mics. The sound utility and Michael Wynne (from the Michael Wynne KZbin channel) were on my team recording sound and John was our playback guy. Blasting movies, challenges and enough time to do things the right way made it a great experience.

@@SoundSpeeds - might be cool if you did a "care and feeding of your sound department" video aimed at production managers, cinematographers, and the like. Even locations and art department types could benefit from it, and anyone who wants to work in sound on set!
