I have one, it's a good accessory, I used it with my Sachtler heavy duty harness and now I have the Orca Bag harness (the regular model), I don't use the metal clip that comes with it. The foam strip helps a lot with handling noise, the hanger allows me to boom with one hand (stationary or slow walk, haven't tried running with it... I wouldn't recommend it). Last time I used it I was using an Ambient pole (extended around 5 meters long or so) with a Rycote super blimp with a 416 and the deadcat on it, no flex and no noise!

I have a Panasonic S5ii. It has a LOW gain setting and a STANDARD gain setting. The low gain setting is great and the input can be turned down to -18. However the dialogue is also very quiet. The only solution is to turn the audio up which of course defeats the object of the exercise as that also boosts the noise floor. I use a wireless system with my mic. And have already established the wireless system doesn't add to the recorded noise floor. It is the camera pre-amp that is generating the lions share of noise. Would adding a pre-amp after the wireless receiver and before the camera input allow me to boost the dialogue volume without boosting the camera pre-amp noise. If so, what would you recommend?
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds Күн бұрын
Not necessarily. It may make it worse. Of you turn up the output volume of the receiver all the way and it's still too quiet going into the camera, see if there's a mic level you could try.

That’s me at 14:10 where they show me using 2 Boomhangers. The harness in this photo is a Craftsman harness that I modified. My bag with a MixPre 3 was light enough for the Craftsman harness to get by, but eventually upgraded to a used Orca harness when I got the MixPre 10 II. I’ve since replaced my Orca harness with the latest model K-Tek harness. I still use 2 BoomHangers on the new K-Tek harness and figured a better, more central way to clip on the BoomHangers than in this video which I don’t know how to describe without photos.

Yep. I had precisely NO problem shelling out some extra cash for the additional features on my MixPre-II-in my case, the musician plugin. (especially considering the discount promotions they've offered for them.) I was really fortunate, though. Mine was a discounted demo unit . . . that turns out already had Mixassist and one instance of Noiseassist licenses attached.

@@SoundSpeeds I'm not 100% sure. The plugin makes the menus and options look different and changes the workflow and functionality. I think I would say it's also "different", rather than simply "more". I know that having the switchable project type option is an improvement over needing to choose the "M" version of the device they originally offered.

@@SoundSpeeds I don't think it's a cardinal decision to spend a lot of money to buy new equipment to find the best sound. Isn't that what you recommend? I would advise novice producers to buy used hi-fi equipment. For example, I have a fleet of equipment like this: a Paradigms CC-250 v6 speaker system, a Harman/Kardon HK620 amplifier, M-Audio 24/96 sound card, and a Tascam TM-80 microphone. In the spring there will be a debut concert with my singer Ekaterina Chudotvorova @chudotvorova, she will perform her own songs to my arrangements in the style of Electro Opera House. I would be interested in your opinion on my sound.

I think I mostly agree. If a mixer has a physical input, I better be able to use it out of the box. I’m ok with paying for software that runs on the limited amount of included processing power. I do still think it’s scummy if I can purchase and run all the available plugins at the same time without limit. I need to be making a choice of what limitation I’m putting on myself by enabling other features. Those limitations should not be arbitrary, but actual limits of the included hardware. They can’t put infinite ram in these things. I’m in the video now just past where you talk about the mixpre II noise reduction. My understanding is that it works differently than you describe and is actually more palatable. They can only handle running 2 instances of the plug-in single channel each. My understanding of the licensing is if you buy the license for one instance you can choose to apply it to any single input channel, L mix, or R mix. If you buy the license for the second instance, you can then enable another input channel or single mix channel. I haven’t paid for either yet so someone correct me if I’m wrong.

There are two ethical ways to do this. Pay for the full hardware and its capabilities up front, or offer the hardware free (or at substantial discount), then unlock the software/firmware when purchased separately. However, we live in a pay-to-access society. If you had to buy your iPhone up front, there would be a lot more cheap androids out there. This has the unfortunate side effect of blinding people to the pay-to-unlock scam you are describing. We are so used to paying for things after we receive them, we forget the instances when we already paid for them. We allowed companies to normalize this behavior. They will stop, when we stop letting them. Happy Holidays (unironically)!

Optional features often entail additional royalties paid to developers of various technologies, such as Dugan automix. Even if the automix function is a knock-off of Dugan, it involves additional development costs. So it is not unreasonable to sell a product for the lowest price possible, in which case those who need the feature bear the additional cost. Buying content on physical media does not constitute ownership of the content, and you are still restricted by the licensing agreement. Remember all the old FBI notices on VHS rental tapes? "Home use only" meant for private performance in your home, not public performance in a business such a day care, or placing a prerecorded tape into a circulating library at your church. Consumer expectations were set by the ease of disregarding the license, not the actual legality of doing so. Disney was about the only company that made the news for filing lawsuits against daycare centers for exhibiting Disney movies in commercial settings, because that harmed the evergreen revenue stream of their intellectual property. Intellectual property is also the root basis of hardware fees. For instance, a manufacturer of digital products may determine that developing custom silicon processors carries a very high price tag. If I recall, Jared Land - the former CEO of RED Digital Cinema - said it cost over $1 million to develop a custom sensor. If a manufacturer of sound equipment is faced with development costs of this magnitude, it is not reasonable that they would design custom silicon for every product in their line. If they did, the base models would carry an exorbitant price tag, or more realistically, they could not afford to offer high end products because the unit sales would never amortize the custom silicon costs. It would be easy to hide the costs of high end gear by simply manufacturing a different model device using the same core technology. But that seems wasteful of design and manufacturing resources, product packaging, and complications of multiple SKUs for distribution and retail. The unlock code solution seems to be the middle ground. What offends me more is products that do not involve intellectual property rights starting to adopt onerous licensing agreements. But this is certainly happening as traditional businesses look on with envy at the business models and recurring revenue streams of the tech giants. For instance, nobody should tolerate a common hammer that is restricted to "home use only." Or a requirement that professional carpenters should pay multiple cost as a price premium to purchase the same hammer for use in commercial construction.

mixed feelings here. If i buy the venue-type receiver and i know for the project i'm doing that i absolutely won't need more than 8 channels, i will be more than happy to use the unit as is. If i learn i have a project coming up that i will need 16 channels of wireless for a few days, i am willing to rent them for the company for a short period of time. this would be much more convenient than having to physically rent extra gear for that period of time. the main difference with this is that it allows accessibility to mixers that wouldn't normally have the finances to buy a unit with 32 channels. i do not like the instances you named regarding pay to play subscriptions. I 'purchased' a movie online a few years back to do research for a sequel i was mixing. when i went to review said purchased film, it had been taken down by the provider.

It’s exactly the same thing as going to the grocery store and purchasing a month’s worth of provisions, getting them home, and then being told: “Sorry, please subscribe to unlock the packaging.” I admit that I don’t have nostalgia over any video game or system, but it would seem to me that the gaming manufacturers run the risk of people, especially Dads, coming to their senses, cancelling their subscriptions to everything, and saying: “Son, let’s go bowling. After that let’s go fishing. And today, instead of this subscription, I’m gonna get you a baseball glove.”

It would seriously discourage companies from abandoning products and if they did abandon it you would get every feature. And then the open source Community could take over. What happens if you buy some thing with 4 widgets and 8 widgets locked and then 10 years down the road you say oh I want those 8 widgets? What's the company gonna say ... we turned that server off you can't have it. I bought a Mackie mixer and it came with a DAW software that I then recorded stuff in. I had to reinstall my computer and by the time I got around to installing the software I could no longer activate it because they had since turned off and lost access to the activation server master key! To the credit there was a blurb that said go ahead and pirate it more or less. And they have since worked on the ability to import into their new offering which I only just discovered and so far has worked. Edit: spelling.
