To understand this, you'll need to understand the difference between FK and IK. FK is forward kinematics, where moving the upper arm moves the chain of bones underneath it like the lower arm and hand. IK is literally Inverse kinematics, moving the hand moves the bones above it like the lower and upper arm. I suppose this is the tech jargon as to what actually happens when you switch between FK and IK in SFM, but I've never heard it described like this. Hope this helps, comment from 3 years ago

Watch the other tutorials - puppetering is one of SEVERAL ways of animating. There is a keyframe like system, the graph editor is basically a keyframe system.

How would you animate a character's arms, or hands to make him do a hand waving action? I'm trying to make the scout wave his arms, and I've got all the joints that I don't want manipulated locked into place, and I've taken the part of his arm I do want moving changing in the shot, but it only moves slightly. Is there a way you can manipulate the arms without chopping frames to make it look almost like a stop-motion? Thanks!

It's a colloquialism, though you're right. I don't think he intended for the am to be read because then it really doesn't make sense. People say 12 at night, but usually for later times it's "in the morning". Or you could use a 24 hour clock.

I always enable the rig by dragging the playhead to the end of the shot. Because the model will tend to get distorted and messed up for no current reason at a specific part in the shot.

I taught myself topology quite easily, but this looks so foreign to me. Not completely--I have *some* BG in animation. But point being, math that is 4-5 years above my level is easier to me than SFM is o.O

There are keyframes? If I understand keyframming right? You set a key at one pose, move forward in time, set a new key and change the pose. The character then changes the pose in between those two keys, right? That is how I use SFM anyway. The way they're doing it here leaves no controls over the details.

rigging is the way too go ...check this vid and rig ur player then hit the pelvis bone and drag it down ..then u see that the knee is bending ..i know its hard to do but it will work .also on the arm;s rig ur player and select the hands and rotate it and u see that the hole arm is moving

Puppeteering is actually quite a nice way to get good timing in your shot. It's never perfect, but neither are keyframes the first time around. Want to read up on that? Google: fliponline draw timing

i'm kind of confused, do you need to record before you can do custom animation to move? ie if i want the heavy to pick up something and put it onto of a table. do i need to record the heavy moving from one place to the other than animate the picking up and dropping?

It really isn't all too bad if you know a bit about digital animation already. Now, digital signal processing might make your head hurt a bit (FFTs and similar algorithms.) It's useful to know though if you're interested in learning about high level electronics engineering. Err, that's not really relevant to this, though, but I personally like it.

This isn't "rigging", it's just using a premade IK rig (aka animating using IK).... is there a tutorial out there on how to actually make an IK rig for SFM? edit: I have a custom quadrupedal model with additional joints, so it would be pretty useful to know how to transform its FK skeleton to an IK (or FK/IK) rig

My items i want to edit keep on disappearing every time i relaunch SFM. That means i can't edit faces and lip sync without deleting the current model and replace it with a more updated version. Is that normal? And if it isn't can someone help?

From what I understood by watching his tutorials, you should use rigging to make your model move naturally, almost like a real human being, because if you try move his limbs without rigging, they stretch out like caramel. Rigging is also useful for making a model hold an item in his hand.

why not have a keyframe system instead of graph editing? it seems as though keyframing would be a simpler alternative. Also, being able to tell the program that from here (one point in time) to here (another point in time) that you want something to move, for instance the head, would elliminate the need for animation to be done during a playback of the clip, having keyframing and control over the time would help the animator to get the animation he wants the first time through.
