Can you think of other examples of this happening? Of the top of my head- Derek Fisher, Chauncey Billups, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash. I think Doc Rivers didn't have much of any experience when was hired in Orlando. Any other examples you can think of?

I put some more thought into it...of course, Steve Kerr was hired with no coaching experience and he was the most successful of anyone I mentioned. Although, Kerr did have experience as an executive with Phoenix. Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Isiah Thomas each had no coaching experience either when they were hired as head coaches.

I'm starting to think this draft is getting underrated. Even though it doesn't look like there's much star potential in it there's quite a few good shooters, a good amount of guys that look NBA ready (as a role player) and a lot of raw prospects who given the right environment could develop really well.

If the Lakers were a rebuilding team and they hired JJ Redick, there wouldn't be as much scrutiny about the hire. It makes sense for a rebuilding team to take a flyer on a first-time head coach. But for a team with championship aspirations, it makes less sense to hire a coach with no head coaching experience, no assistant coaching experience, no front office experience, nothing. If you are aspiring to win a title you would think that you would want someone who has at least some experience at one of those levels. Even recent first-time head coaches such as Steve Kerr, Tyronn Lue, and Nick Nurse who all had immediate success had experienced at least one of those levels. And even then we have seen situations like that fail, such as David Blatt, Mark Jackson, or Adrian Griffin. I believe JJ Redick could be a very good coach in the future, but I would like to see him gain assistant coaching experience or get a first-time head coaching job with a rebuilding team. Redick becoming the Lakers coach now seems like a match made in Hell

I don’t hate the idea of JJ making the jump to coaching in a vacuum, but I don’t think any coach in the world is gonna fix the lakers. AD is inconsistent and injured too often, and Lebron is a hoss, but he’s older and slowing down (again, still a really good player I’m not Lebron hating here). And there’s just not eneough going on with the rest of that roster to make a real title run in my opinion.

I’m sorry this is the same thing they did when they bought in Marvin ham. A first year coach but ham at least one championship with the Milwaukee Bucks so he has some experience as an assistant. JJ Reddick, doesn’t have any coaching experience. I mean, everybody will be falling in love with him in the beginning, but when the things get hard, he won’t be able to dictate to LeBron or Anthony Davis. They will have the same stuff they were in before. They didn’t get their experience, Coach who is available BUDENHOLZER. They should just let LeBron coach and see how he fails, he won’t be able to throw nobody else under the bus besides himself. The Lakers are fool and that’s my franchise that I like in the NBA that is.

JJ, don't take the coaching job.....i dislike the Lakers, so if they burn to the ground, I'll be there with marshmallows and wieners....but between your podcast work (which you are rather good at) and broadcasting (which if you are good at that) could give you more power, wealth, and influence than being the Lakers coach if coaching is what you always wanted to do (don't know, won't say one way or another), then start small and grow into it. i genius couldn't pull the lakers out of the mud and make them something quickly, heck if you start in the G-League or as an assistant to someone, you might be a legitimate coach by the time Lebron buys a team, and names it after himself....or just be a force online and be the next Pat McAfee....i don't thing the NBA has one of those yet
