In case you were wondering, the Painted Lady is the spirit of the river, and was weakened by the pollution. Unlike Hei Bai, she wasn't transformed by rage because the river still existed, it was just contaminated. She wanted to help the people of the village, but couldn't be their guardian again until Katara stepped in.

To answer Neel's comment at the beginning of the episode, they are posing as Fire Nation people born/raised in the Earth Kingdom Colonies. A real world example would be, British people born/raised in the US from British parents.

Another example would be the British occupation of India.its a colony of the British empire so if you are born of British decent but raised in India you would be considered a colonial even though your parents are both from England.in short he is posing as a child of fire nation decent that was born in the occupied earth kingdom territory hince the term colonial. If he was just from the earth kingdom they would call him a native. Btw loving the reactions to the series. Can't wait to see y'all get to the invasion. What I found weird is the assumption that the colonies discussed in the last episode might stem from the Fire Nation recently having taken over Ba Sing Se. Despite them watching for example the episode Jet which discussed one of the colony villages. I always thought it was rather clear that these colonis were founded sometime during the hundred year war.

The fire nation has been at war for 100 years and a lot of their conquest has been in the earth nation so there are a lot of colonies in the earth kingdom that are part of the fire nation where they colonise it after invading. (Why would you invade if you aren’t going to use the land you take for your own people, so you send your own people over to settle in the land you take) so when they talk about being from the colonies they are pretending to be fire nation citizens who come from their lands in the earth nation. We saw bits of this in season 1 and 2 with Omashu being completely colonised after capture with fire nation officials and industry moving in. Haru’s town was occupied semi-recently and was in the process of having their fighting people (earth benders) taken away, probably before fire nation farmers were sent over. Also in the episode with jet, where the local town jet tried to destroy was completely fire nation while still being in the earth kingdom.

Neel's assumptionsare just wrong. They believe they are fire nation citizens who lived in the existing colonies in the Earth kingdom, not Earth kingdom citizens from recently conquered land. It's the same thing the teacher thought when Aang went to the Fire Nation school.

@@michaelklaus no that was conquered land too. They had only been there 5 years and when the Earth-benders escaped they planned to take it back. Nothing showed any Fire nation citizens lived there.
