Well that's been stuck in my head for over 25 years now.

I believe the opening melody comes from the Gilbert and Sullivan song "When a Wooer Goes a Wooing" from "The Yeomen of the Guard," which premiered a year before this march. Souza must have been a big G&S fan!

Yes, that is the song from "Yeomen", and Sousa was a big G&S fan!

Back in the 50s-early 60s, my mother used to sing the "Aunt Dinah's Quilting Party" song. This is the only time I've ever heard it since then!

Really very well balanced and just an incredibly beautiful march. Wow.

The first clarinet part is so difficult lol. Played it last year as that part.

I recognize that tune in the 1st strain: it's from The Yeomen of the Guard by G&S, in a quartet called "When a wooer goes a wooing"....I've sung it! OOOooooppps....I see you included that information in your notes above...thank you! I had never heard this march before, but I know Sousa aspired to be the next Gilbert and Sullivan and wrote operettas, so it's not surprising he'd include them in his work.

And there's also the song "Seeing Nellie Home", which might have been influenced by Sousa's inspiration as well (or, I could be completely wrong, either of which is possib;e!).

Actually, it was quite the opposite. Sousa took the existing song "The Quilting Party" (also known as "Seeing Nellie Home"), and made a march of it. He did this quite often with existing popular tunes, as they pleased his audiences.

Good grief, I hate this march. I know why Sousa wrote it. He knew his audience and appealed to it. But really, this wasn't one of his best efforts.
