The smell of rain in the bush on a summer afternoon, the sunrise in Durban or Sunset in Cape Town or the vastness of the Karoo of Kalahari….these are things that can’t be taken away. With all our worldly troubles africa and South Africa remains awesome. 😊 Looking forward to hosting some epic times here for Andrew, and who know maybe just maybe Africa will delight you once more💚

The quality of the roads of Cape Town in this video look really amazing to be honest. Dont worry, we wont let the wheels of our beloved country fall off totally. The recent Rugby World Cup win is a turning point in our history.

Don't pin your hopes on winning a sporting competition being a turning point for a whole country... Just do yourself a favour and don't! Manage your expectations. The two things are completely unrelated, I'm afraid. Greed, propaganda, intimidation, political patronage, incompetence, nepotism and a (lighter) form of Marxism are the cancer on SA. Those at the top know exactly what needs to be done but they can't muster the political will to do what's right and get the right skills into the right places and build a meritocracy. This is because there is a constant war within themselves whereby the temptation to get more money by whatever means available is greater than their desire to see a country run well and be prosperous, and this desire for money is greater even than the desire to leave a good name and legacy behind. They just don't care enough. Apart from the DA winning and gaining the presidency, I see little hope in improvement. Damn I wish I was wrong about what I'm writing, but I fear I'm not! Having said all this, the rest of the Western world is slowly losing its identity and is also becoming one huge mental asylum.

I also used to live in SA (JNB) and returned a few weeks ago for a 10 day trip. We drove down from Gauteng to Kwa Zulu Natal and could not get over how well everyone was driving. However, I was comparing this to my current home Nairobi Kenya, where driving is pure anarchy.

This is an awesome quality! I love the coffee station with the quick access and everything fixed to avoid rattling. The electrical box looks very well thought out with easy access. Great Job Paul and Schalk! Can’t wait to see your the final roomtour Andrew. Thanks for sharing Oliver

Andrew, what a lovely little electrical box where everything is contained in one area and allows for some expansion, it ties in nicely with the other systems (Egon) that is available. You do need to listen to Paul and take his advice on board, he does know what he's talking about. Quite often the manufacturer will give a peak value to some appliance, however it doesn't mean you should take it to that value. Having some reserve is important for longevity. The problem with electrical/electronic devices is that you cant see the damage that is caused by taking them to their peak value. There is a mechanical component to electronic devices, they are a physical component that are subjected to stresses just like any other mechanical component, being influenced by ambient temperature for one. Taking them to their maximum values and beyond only reduces their life expectancy by stressing the components within. These values are generally given by the manufacturer at a nice ambient temperature, quite often the ambient temperature can be quite hotter than this. Anyway, it looks like a nice product, I hope you enjoy it in your build.

About the toaster … Have you tried toasting your bread slices in a dry frying pan on top of the jet boiler? I think it will be a very good option. About the frying pan … always cast iron, never ever teflon/aluminium.

About the driving in South Africa … It sounds like Mexico and Central America. 50% focus is on avoiding accidents, 50% on getting to the destination safely. - No it is not to my liking either, but it is what it is and no matter what we do we cannot change it to the better. I drive a Jimny. It has a lot of space, but it has no space for frustration, anger, or arguments. Despite the size of your large Troopie I think you should apply the same attitude.

@chrisjan1703 Great comment! Don't forget, South African are winners. (sorry New Zealand). Living in SA means having to constantly deal with a number of challenges but we face up to those and in the process come up with innovations and solutions from which the rest of the world can only learn. Geez, Australia must be so boring!

Not sure how old the video is but when you sit on the right facing the other side a slide from just under the top on the left side would create a place to have a lap top closer to you. As it is sitting on the right you would have to stretch to work on a laptop etc.

Yes Andrew you are spot on. It is a pity that one must drive or adopt a style of driving “ above the law or anything goes”to survive. Absolutely no respect for/from your fellow road user. People literally die because of it. I hate it as a SA citizen. Enough negativity and Love to see more travels.

@@4xoverland interesting ... in our travel truck, we have a Victron tech room to deal with 5KW solar and full electric 2x5kva inverter setup... we installed a fan connected to the same sensors at the top of the room that kicks in at 35°C ... in summer, it does so regularly .. ( should it prove to be necessary after all, a small silent Pc fan will do the trick )

Without adding the pop top, why not make the cabinets the same height on both sides so that a flip board in the middle would create enough space for two people to sleep comfortably? Design with a minimalist point of view and only take what is necessary for safely going remote and not taking all the ‘nice to have’ that are not really required.

the coffee at the door is nice looking but it means you have to open the door even if you want to make coffee inside. Not a good choice in dusty, mosquito/fly-prone, rainy/cold, etc. places. Also that box with the electronics/batteries if I understood correctly is between the two front seats which will make it difficult to get to the back from the cockpit.

The moment I say anything negative about SA, I get yelled at. South African ask me to stop focussing on the negative. I say, YOU stop focussing on the negative! I present both sides, good and bad. MOSTLY GOOD. Sadly it seems, the few negatives are amplified in the eyes of South Africans and they get defensive. And it appears, not a single good story ever gets through. You guys put walls up against it, and attack the messenger no matter how accurate the stories or commentary may be.

The Troopy has a longer wheelbase. Its is also higher. Its floor pan is a different shape. It has a far longer and flatter load area. It might not be twice the volume, but my point is, its has far more usable space. I've owned both 76 and 78 and its no contest.

Bullshit! Vaccines and lockdowns were mandatory in SA enforced for white people, but not for black. How is that freedom? Australia works. Visit the municipality for something and I'm done in 20 minutes during rush hour. We have free world class medical, for everyone, any time, any where. Drivers don't try and run you off the road for driving slowly. Your death toll over as typical Easter weekend is over 1000. Here, if its 50, there is an uproar. People obey the law. Nobody ever talks about crime. EVER! Because its not part of every day life. We get free gas for cooking at the beach. I don't lock my front door sometimes because I do not need to. You are all locked in cages at night. We are not. How in God's name is that freedom?

Having visited SA over the past 20 odd years, i note the deterioration of the country's infrastructure and its facilities. On my first initial visit I noted how clean, modern and pleasant most larger places were. In detriment to what I was used to, i saw how people lived in beautiful houses wrapped within cages! Having returned recently from visiting family and friends, the houses remain wrapped in ironwork but now have additions. Large tanks to store water, rain water for use in grey systems and mains water for cooking, washing etc, all drinking water now seems to be bought from stores. Also noted was the large freshwater tanks took so much water, those further down the line, saw none. Our friends in Southbroom had nothing through their taps for 3 months due to large houses on the hill filling 90, 000 litre water tanks first. Another addition is a large generator, fuel tank and an inverter, for when the power goes off. The peace of SA suburban streets has been replaced by the hum of generators Having worked in the utility industry all my working life, to see what has happened to such a country, makes me very sad.
