If you’re earning in USD, GBP, and/or EUR, you can literally eat the best of the best at a very reasonable cost. When I was in Jo’berg a couple of months ago, I was eating at some of the more expensive restaurants, and it was almost 1/4 of the cost I’d pay in the U.S. I love, love the ZAR to USD conversion!

@@Marissa821 It is worrying indeed. I just read an article stating that Cape Town has the highest number of Airbnbs than any other city in the world so its no wonder why rent/cost of living is sky high there. Now that people are waking up to Joburg, the same will happen there if there is no regulation on short-term rentals.
@Marissa821
@Marissa821 3 ай бұрын
@@Miss_G-e7r ☹ in a way I knew whats happening in Cape Town was going to eventually directly affect us. People naturally migrate to more affordable places as incomes come under pressure. Naturally Joburg was always next in line. Conveniently located so you can dip out to CPT anytime, 2 international airports. The Gautrain. Uber access everywhere. Close to the Kruger. Good weather. The best food scene+ the best people. Im hoping enough SAns have secured their properties in Joburg by now and are holding on. Do.not. sell your houses people

@@Marissa821 Very true about securing property ASAP. The coastal areas outside of the WC are also at risk as last time I was home, I was hearing a lot of foreign languages (mainly EU) in my home city of Gqeberha/PE which is unusual as we normally don’t get a lot of tourism. I’m not against tourism as it’s good for the economy but it defs needs to be regulated so that it doesn’t upset the lives of the locals.

It is scary how much the cost of living has gone up in SA 😥I live in the EU and these Woolworths food prices are quite similar to what you would see in grocery stores like Spar and Billa in Austria, which are both on the higher end. Granted that its Woolworths food but when I was home in Dec 2023, I noticed that the prices at Checkers and PnP are comparable or in some cases, a bit higher than Aldi prices over here. Just a different perspective on this.

@@JulianAlbino that makes a lot of sense especially if you plan on staying in Joburg long term. I feel the rent prices are only going to keep increasing. I want to settle in CT permanently. I was planning to come on the retirement visa and was trying to secure a year lease in CT and it was so hard trying to find what I want while being in America. A lot of landlords dont even rent the nice places for 1 year as im sure you know lol The prices have gotten so expensive in just one year too. I saw a 1 bedroom condo in Durbanville outside of CT for $15k usd 1 year ago and I looked again and saw one in the same complex for $50k. I decided to stay in Crete Greece while I save to purchase soon after I make it to CT. I'll come visit though.

Keep in mind with all these Vloggers posting about new places to live is a major contributor to the rise housing prices. If YT isn’t your bread and butter definitely keep your life private as much as it’s nice to share and hear stories… When I travel I keep it to myself and there’s another traveler in Africa who intentionally doesn’t post the name of restaurants to avoid a rush of ppl from flooding her favorite spots.
