A video report of a one week tour in the West Cape Province, showing a number of steam hauled charter trains. Part 1 is dedicated to the so-called Klawer line, from Cape Town to Paleisheuvel. A mixed freight and passenger train is hauled by Class 19 D and Class 24 locomotives.

Enjoyed watching this. I actually worked as a fireman in Durban in the 70's to pay my way through university. Fired class 14Rs, S2s, H2s, GOs and GMAMs. the last two being Garretts. It was hard work with average shifts being 12 to 14 hours a day, Looking back though I was privileged to be part of what is now history.

How much longer will the worlds oil last you think? They say history repeats itself, I think these steamers will end up coming back to transport us and our goods and to run our electric generators for lighting cities, for at least as long as our coal lasts.

In 2001 I was working on board a ship that was tied up in Durban. Around Easter a steam engine and passenger coaches came down-country from Pietermaritzburg or Ladysmith (don't remember which). A friend and I had the chance to ride around the harbo(u)r. Most left the train at the south end and took a ferry back to town. But we spoke with the conductor, who could tell by our outrageous American accents that we were not Afrikaners; he let us ride back to the north end. Thank you for reminding me of that fine memory and time well-spent enjoying the graciousness and hospitality of people in KwaZulu-Natal. It's very gratifying to know that we Americans are not the only ones preserving, maintaining, and running steam locomotives. Hooray RSA! Et merci beaucoup pour le vidéo!

Beautiful lighting with stunning geological background landscapes add an additional extra to wonderfully captured steam trains. The sound of two steam locomotives double heading pushing up hill is music! Looking forward to the next episode with the Red Devil. Great to watch on my 75"TV screen.

This style of photography is engaging and effective. The camera remains static so that all movement comes from the locos and their trains, plus we as viewers have time to appreciate the South African landscapes (the setting). John, Brisbane, Australia

As someone from the U.S.A, I love this channel!!! I had no idea steam was alive and well in Africa. We lost our mainline steam in 1952, such a shame. Thanks for the videos.

@johnfellows2867 I just found this now 8/10/2023 and I wish to say we in South Africa had the best in the world but because of the rest of the world we had to hand it all over to the majority even though they knew nothing of preservation Now sadly all is lost forever

Greetings from Bergvliet, Cape Town. Fantastic stuff! For me as a blind person I'm unfortunately not able to see the images but I just love the sound quality! What do you think of the idea of us all working together to find a whistle like the one from the 19D to fit and install on the 24?

Greetings from Strasbourg (France).Thank you for your nice comment. I am unfortunately going to disappoint you: I love the whistle of class 24
@Preyser123
@Preyser123 5 жыл бұрын
Lol. Okay. I find the whistle on the 24 a bit too high-pitched. Lol . However, it is nice and interesting to know that some people out there prefer whistles like that. I personally prefer the whistle from the 19D. The 24 had one like that when she ran for Atlantic Rail, now in partnership with Ceres Rail, and then her boiler expired in 2015. She then got the high-pitched whistle when the boiler was redone last year. To me I think a whistle like the one on the 19D goes very well on the 24 as well because whistles like that are very unique for South African steam locos in my opinion. The 24 also has a very nice beat as well.

Great video. How can I find out about future steam trips in South Africa?
@KochersbergTV
@KochersbergTV 3 жыл бұрын
Considering the sanitary situation in South Africa, and a number of bankruptcy among the steam preservation societies, not much is going to happen in the foreseeable future. The trains in this video were organized by Ceres Steam Trains, but their site is currently unavailable.

When I was a child, I contracted whooping cough and somebody told my father (GOD rests his soul) that to take me to the train station while locomotives were there would be good for me... I remember distinctively the sulphur smell from the burning coal but I never saw anything even resembling the smoke shown in this film... i don't believe burning lumber would give out such smoke...!!!!!

I've just come across this wonderful video. Great train, lovely line but as usual anyone with constructive criticism - ie the truth - is labelled, conveniently, a troll. The issue is ignored and the gate is opened for offensive remarks by people who wonder whether the steam engines are 'supercharged like diesels'!! Here's the truth - except for high end cameras, video shoots about 1/30 or even 1/60 per second. Anyone who shoots stills, knows this is not enough to stop the action of a train passing at close location. This cameraman has lazily left the camera on the tripod and not realised that every single shot is blurred in the last 25% close action because of his stubborn, but more likely, ignorant decision not to pan as the train went past. As a result the video is frustratingly ruined and too boring to watch to the end.
